Advertisement Before joining the Magic, Shammgod was a player development coach for the Dallas Mavericks. He joined the coaching staff in 2019 following his stint in the same role in Providence. According to reports, he played a significant role in the development of players Bryce Cotton and Kris Dunn. Shammgod is the fifth member of Jason Kidd's coaching staff to leave following the blockbuster Luka Doncic trade. Orlando Magic head coach Jamahl Mosley watches from the Butler II-Imagn Images The coaches who have left the Mavericks are Sean Sweeney, Alex Jensen, Marko Milic and Darrell Armstrong. "Dallas Mavericks player development coach God Shammgod has agreed to join the Orlando Magic as an assistant coach, Andy Miller of Klutch Sports tells ESPN. Shammgod has worked for the Mavericks since 2019 and now receives a larger role in Orlando," Charania reported. Advertisement Shammgod will have some familiarity as he joins Jamahl Mosley's staff. Mosley was an assistant coach for the Mavericks from 2014 to 2021, before he was hired by the Orlando Magic to lead the team. The former professional basketball player appeared in 20 games for the Washington Wizards in the 1997-98 season. During that stretch, he averaged 3.1 points on 32.8% shooting from the field. Stephen A. Smith urges legendary Mavericks coach to join Magic, Jamahl Mosley
The post Stephen A. Smith urges legendary Mavericks coach to join Magic, Jamahl Mosley appeared first on ClutchPoints. On Wednesday morning's broadcast of ESPN's First Take, Stephen A. Smith publicly called on longtime Dallas Mavericks player development coach God Shammgod to leave the franchise and join the Orlando Magic under head coach Jamahl Mosley. Advertisement 'I also saw some reports about Orlando being interested in God Shammgod Wells. He is an assistant coach on the Dallas Mavericks,' Smith said. 'I covered this brother when he was in high school in New York City. We go back a long ways or whatever… I'm advising him on national television: leave. Get the hell up out of Dallas.' Shammgod, a New York City native and former Providence standout, has served in a player development role with the Mavericks since 2016. He is widely respected for his ball-handling expertise and has worked with numerous All-Star players during his tenure. Smith's comments follow reports that the Orlando Magic are targeting Shammgod to join Mosley's coaching staff. Mosley previously served as a Mavericks assistant for seven seasons before becoming Orlando's head coach in 2021. The two coaches share a long-standing professional relationship that could be rekindled as the Magic continue to reshape their identity. Stephen A. Smith cites Mavericks' changes, backs God Shammgod-to-Magic move 'With new ownership and some of the decisions that they're making to curve course of whatever have you… they seem to be more about numbers rather than taking care of the people they need to take care of,' Smith said. 'And I'm not saying it's an awful thing because I understand business decisions need to be made every day, but with Kyrie Irving, I think he's been lowballed… and God Shamgod get the hell up out of there.' Advertisement He continued: 'Go to Orlando with Mosley. You know who that brother is, get the hell up out of there and start anew. By the way, there's no state income taxes in Florida too. You're good, get the hell up out of there.' Smith cited Irving's contract as one of his concerns with the Mavericks' direction. According to ESPN's Shams Charania, Irving declined his $42.9 million player option for the 2025–26 season and is instead expected to sign a three-year, $119 million extension with Dallas. The deal includes a player option for the 2027–28 season. The Mavericks traded Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers at the 2025 trade deadline, signaling a shift in organizational priorities. Meanwhile, the Magic have retooled their core around Paolo Banchero, Franz Wagner, and Jalen Suggs, recently acquiring Desmond Bane from the Memphis Grizzlies in a blockbuster deal last week. As they continue to build under head coach Jamahl Mosley, Orlando is looking to reinforce its player development system. Shammgod's potential addition could bring veteran experience and skill development expertise to one of the league's most promising young teams. RUMOR: Multiple teams trying to raid Jason Kidd's Mavericks coaching staff
The post RUMOR: Multiple teams trying to raid Jason Kidd's Mavericks coaching staff appeared first on ClutchPoints. Despite being on the New York Knicks' radar, head coach Jason Kidd knows he will remain with the Dallas Mavericks for the 2025-26 NBA campaign. He cannot say the same about his staff, however. Multiple teams are taking a hard look at the Mavs' bench this offseason, threatening to bring about more change in a franchise that is still adjusting after trading Luka Doncic. Advertisement Kidd surely wants to maintain some continuity, but he could see as many as three assistants walk out the door for another job in the near future, per NBA correspondent Marc Stein. Memphis Grizzlies HC Tuomas Iisalo is considering Jared Dudley to be his top guy on a squad that has already significantly altered its identity following Sunday's Desmond Bane blockbuster. Reigning Coach of the Year Kenny Atkinson also has the 14-year NBA player in mind for the same role on the Cleveland Cavaliers. Sean Sweeney, who is currently Kidd's No. 1, is in the running to join Mitch Johnson's staff with the San Antonio Spurs. He first worked under Kidd on the Brooklyn Nets more than a decade ago, so navigating his possible departure could be challenging. Additionally, Stein reports that the Orlando Magic are pursuing Mavericks player development coach God Shammgod, who spent a few years working with head coach Jamahl Mosley while the two were both assistants in Dallas. If fans turn off their natural biases, they could see why each assistant would consider making a move. Will the Mavericks have to pivot? Dudley can climb the coaching ranks by joining either Iisalo or Atkinson. Aiding the Grizzlies in a successful transitional phase or helping the Cavs finally break through in the playoffs would each look mighty impressive on a future job application. Sweeney can take one step closer to a HC position himself if he enjoys a momentous run with Victor Wembanyama and the Spurs. And Shammgod can gamble on the Magic becoming a long-term force in the Eastern Conference by reconnecting with his old friend. Advertisement Dallas has a talented roster and a potential generational talent on the way, but it is not necessarily an immediate launching pad to prosperity. Anthony Davis weathered injury troubles as soon as he arrived in town, and Kyrie Irving is recovering from a torn ACL. Therefore, the squad's competitive standing for next season is mired in uncertainty. Moreover, the residual effects of the Luka Doncic saga could incentivize employees to remove themselves from the organization if a favorable opportunity presents itself. Based on their own recent actions, it seems like the Mavericks are anticipating changes to their coaching staff. Jason Kidd is welcoming in longtime assistant Jay Triano, who operated as an associate head coach with the Sacramento Kings last season. His experience may prove especially vital if Sweeney departs. More modifications may be required. Fortunately, the Mavs know exactly who they are taking with the No. 1 pick in the NBA Draft on June 25, so they should have enough spare time to search for new assistants if necessary.
