‘Cybercrimes threat to nation's economy': Court denies bail to farmer who provided mule accounts

Mumbai: Noting the serious nature of cybercrimes and their potential to undermine the nation's economy, a sessions court denied bail to a Bikaner farmer who allegedly arranged for bank accounts to park Rs 7.2 lakh conned out of a naval staffer threatened with digital arrest last year. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The court said if released on bail, the accused, Ugraram Godara, might commit similar offences. "The advocate for the accused vehemently argued that he received only Rs 22,500 [as commission]. More than the amount, the modus operandi holds weightage," the judge said. "He (Godara) took a day's commission [from each transaction] and handed over that amount to the key accused. This is a very serious cybercrime." Godara was arrested by Mumbai police on April 8. The complainant said he received a call from a person who claimed to be a representative of Telecom Regulatory Authority of India on Dec 24, 2024, and was told that his bank account was used to launder illicit funds abroad in a case linked to a politician. The Navy staffer said he then received a video call from a person posing as a Delhi police officer, who cited a pending arrest warrant and threatened to place him under digital arrest. The impersonator said the warrant could be cancelled if he transferred certain sums of money to specific bank accounts. The complainant complied and eventually transferred Rs 7.2 lakh in all. The prosecution alleged Godara provided mule bank accounts for commissions. As per the alleged modus operandi, another fraudster would contact targets and direct them to transfer money into these accounts. It was claimed Godara's driver, Shyamsunder Rahar, withdrew money from different ATMs, took his cut and handed the rest to him. The prosecution said Godara has been named in other cybercrime cases too. Godara's advocate said he was arrested merely on suspicion, adding that he has a young daughter, his wife has died, and his elderly father is dependent on him.

Court rejects bail plea of Rajasthan farmer accused of cyber fraud

Mumbai, A court has denied bail to a 35-year-old farmer from Rajasthan arrested in a cyber fraud case, ruling that it was a serious offence and posed a danger to the country's economy. The victim, a Navy man, was allegedly duped of ₹7.2 lakh after being threatened with digital arrest in a money laundering case in which senior NCP leader Nawab Malik was involved. Additional sessions judge Avinash Kulkarni, on June 13, rejected the bail plea of Ugraram Godara, arrested on April 8. In the detailed order available on Monday, the court noted that it was a "very serious crime". "The accused has played an important role in such an offence. This cyber-economic crime is a very serious crime which is a danger to the economy of this country. This offence impeaches the credibility of the Indian economy," the court held. According to the prosecution, the complainant, Anilkumar Dimri, an Indian Navy staffer, received a phone call, during which the caller claimed to be from TRAI. The caller informed Dimri that illegal money had been sent abroad from a bank account linked to his phone number, and he was made to believe that he was involved in a money laundering case in which senior politician Malik is an accused, the prosecution said. He later received a video call from another number, during which the caller pretended to be from the Delhi Police and threatened digital arrest. Dimri was instructed to transfer ₹7.2 lakh to a State Bank of India account to avoid arrest, the prosecution said. Realising that he had fallen victim to cyber fraud, Dimri approached the cyber fraud helpline. A case was registered, and Godara was arrested. Godara's lawyer argued that he was innocent and arrested merely on suspicion. His continued custody is not required, especially as he is a widower with a young daughter and an elderly father who is dependent on him, the defence submitted. The defence also highlighted that Godara only received ₹22,500 in this case. However, the court rejected his plea, stating that "considering the nature of offence", if released on bail, "there is a possibility that he may commit the same type of offence".

Lawrence Bishnoi NEW DELHI: The Lawrence Bishnoi group claimed the killing of a Sikh businessman in Ontario's Mississauga early Thursday. The victim, Harjit Singh Dhadda , was shot multiple times near his office. Bishnoi's aide, Rohit Godara , owned up to the killing, accusing Dhadda of furnishing a bail bond for Khalistan Tiger Force chief Arsh Dalla. 'I, Rohit Godara, along with Goldy Brother, am taking responsibility. This man was close to our enemies. He got his brother Mehal Singh Uttarakhand murdered by giving money to Arsh Dalla and Sukha Dunuke. All were named in that case,' Godara said in a post. Despite warning, Dhadda helped Dalla get bail Godara's post said Dhadda was given a warning a year ago but despite that he helped Arsh Dalla's release on bail two months ago. Dhadda was standing near his car when unidentified assailants, believed to have been lying in wait, approached and fired around 20 rounds before fleeing the scene. The gunfire caused panic in the parking lot. A staffer of a local office narrowly avoided injury when a stray bullet entered their office and hit an empty chair, just moments after they stood up. An eyewitness described the scene, saying the gunmen exited a parked car, fired many shots at close range. Dhadda was rushed to the hospital in critical condition but later succumbed to his injuries. Dalla, who replaced slain terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar, fled to Canada in July 2020. He was linked to multiple heinous crimes such as murder, extortion, and targeted killings, with more than 13 FIRs registered against him. In January 2023, he was designated a terrorist by the Union home ministry for his involvement in a series of murders, extortion, terror funding, and targeted killings besides terrorist activities. Godara, on the other hand, is on Interpol's list of wanted men. Interpol issued a red corner notice against Godara in December last year following a request from Indian law enforcement agencies. 'On June 13, 2022, Godara is learnt to have fled from Delhi to Dubai on a forged passport issued in the name of one 'Pawan Kumar'. He is learnt to have taken the same route as his associate, Sachin Bishnoi, who also went to Azerbaijan and was staying in Baku,' said an official.
