China Open heartbreak for Sze Fei-Izzuddin as title defence ends in opening round

KUALA LUMPUR: Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani's hopes of defending their China Open crown were dashed after a shock opening-round exit in Changzhou on Wednesday. The Malaysian pair fell 15-21, 21-15, 21-17 to South Korea's Kang Min Hyuk-Ki Dong Ju in what was their first-ever encounter. The early defeat compounds a tough week for Sze Fei-Izzuddin, who had already surrendered their world No. 1 ranking on Tuesday's latest update, slipping to No. 3 behind new leaders Kim Won Ho-Seo Seung Jae. Their premature exit is expected to cause a further dip in the standings.

Sze Fei commits to pro career with Izzuddin under Kok Siang

Sze Fei-Izzuddin, who will begin their campaign in Changzhou this week as the reigning China Open champions, stressed that they remain fully committed to their status as professional players. The rumours had suggested that the duo were planning a return to the national team to train under experienced Indonesian coach Herry Iman Pierngadi. However, Sze Fei hit back, stating that they are still loyal to their current coach, Teo Kok Siang. 'We wish to clarify that we are happy with our status as a professional pair and reaching the Japan Open final has further strengthened our confidence and drive to continue improve under the guidance of our coach, Teo Kok Siang. 'Our relationship with BAM remains great, and we always appreciate BAM for the support shown to us throughout our stint with them. 'Hope this can stop the untrue rumours out there,' said Sze Fei, who posted the statement on his social media. Rejoining the national team won't be a simple move for Sze Fei-Izzuddin, given their existing sponsorship deal with Victor. Nevertheless, BAM remain open to allowing them to train alongside other players at the Academy Badminton Malaysia (ABM), although it is understood that no official request has been made by the pair so far. Sze Fei-Izzuddin officially left BAM in September last year, when they were ranked world No. 12. Since turning professional, the duo have impressed with their performances, making history by winning the China Open last year. They went on to add the Arctic Open title to their collection before finishing as runners-up at the BWF World Tour Finals in December. The following month they captured the Indian Open title. Just last week in Tokyo, Sze Fei-Izzuddin finished as runners-up at the Japan Open, and they will be looking to build on that momentum when they open their China Open campaign today against South Korea's Kang Min-hyuk-Ki Dong-ju in the first round.

Sze Fei-Izzuddin dismiss rumours of their return to BAM

KUALA LUMPUR: Men's doubles Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani have cleared the air on rumours of their returning to the BA of Malaysia (BAM). There has been talk that the independent world No. 3 pair were returning to BAM to train with legendary coach Herry IP. Sze Fei-Izzuddin quit BAM in September last year — just a week after winning the Japan Open. They went on to claim the China Open, Arctic Open and India Open, shooting up to world No. 1 eight weeks ago. However, they have not won a title since their India Open triumph in January. They have since relinquished their top spot to South Korean pair Seung Seo Jae-Kim Won Ho, who defeated them in the Japan Open final last week. In an Instagram Story post on his official account, Sze Fei clarified that he and his partner are happy with their status as a professional pair. "We wish to clarify that we are happy with our status as a professional pair and reaching the Japan Open final has further strengthened our confidence and drive to continue improving under the guidance of our coach, Teo Kok Siang," read the post. "Our relationship with BAM remains great, and we always appreciate BAM for the support shown to us throughout our stints with them. "Hope this can stop the untrue rumours out there." Sze Fei-Izzuddin are competing in the China Open, where they are the tournament top seeds, and expected to face South Korea's Kang Min Hyuk-Ki Dong Ju in the first round tomorrow.

Aaron-Wooi Yik regain status as national No. 1 men's doubles pair

PETALING JAYA: Shuttlers Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik regained their status as the country's No. 1 men's doubles pair after independent duo Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani dropped to No. 3 in the latest world rankings. In the rankings list updated by the Badminton World Federation (BWF) on Tuesday (July 22), Sze Fei-Izzuddin lost their No. 1 spot as expected to South Korea's Seo Seung-jae-Kim Won-ho after finishing runners-up to the latter in the Japan Open final on Sunday (July 20). Although Aaron-Wooi Yik suffered a shock loss in the first round in Japan to another Malaysian pair Ong Yew Sin-Teo Ee Yi, their fine form before the tourney helped them retain their world No. 2 ranking. The other Malaysian pair ranked in the top 10 are world No. 7 Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun. In the women's doubles, Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah also retained their world No. 3 ranking after finishing runners-up to China's world No. 1 Liu Shengshu-Tan Ning in Japan. In the mixed doubles, there were no changes for world No. 4 Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei and world No. 6 Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai Jemie.
