Exciting colt Bosustow will head to next month's Stradbroke Handicap with just 51.5kg on his back

Exciting colt Bosustow will head to next month's Stradbroke Handicap with just 51.5kg on his back following the release of the weights for the $3m Group 1 at Eagle Farm. The Annabel Neasham and Rob Archibald -trained three-year-old will likely line up in Saturday's Group 1 Kingsford Smith Cup (1300m) before being aimed toward the Stradbroke (1400m) on June 14. Bosustow won the Group 3 Gold Coast Guineas (1200m) by a massive six lengths on a heavy track on May 10. 'He looks a real Stradbroke type, he'll definitely be competitive in the race,' Racing Queensland's chief handicapper Nathan Bourke said on Monday night. 'It was hard to get him any higher than that (51.5kg). They get a 1.5kg allowance in this race under the weight-for-age scale. 'If I gave him any more weight then he'd be up there with Group 1 winners like Port Lockroy and Golden Mile. 'The three-year-olds are always hard to line up. Angel Capital (51kg) is another three-year-old who I think will be competitive if he gets a start. ' Ameena has got some good runs in Group 1 races in South Australia so there's a fair bit of interest in the three-year-olds, especially Bosustow and Angel Capital.' Bosustow loves racing at @GCTurfClub! He dominates the Gold Coast Guineas for @ANeashamRacing ðŸ'° — SKY Racing (@SkyRacingAU) May 10, 2025 • The Bjorn Baker -trained Stefi Magnetica took out the Stradbroke as a three-year-old last year but she won't be back to defend her crown this time. Impending (2017) and Sincero (2011) are the only other three-year-olds to salute in the time-honoured feature in recent years. War Machine (53kg) is the $4.50 favourite in the Stradbroke with TAB, ahead of Joliestar (56kg, $6), Benedetta (53.5kg, $11) Bosustow ($11) and Kimochi (54kg, $11). • Local hero The Inflictor ($15) will carry just 51kg and the Craig Cousins -trained gelding is assured of a spot after winning the Gateway (1400m) in December last year. Cousins has already indicated that Cejay Graham will ride The Inflictor in the Straddie. Brilliant sprinter Giga Kick, the 2022 The Everest winner, is the Stradbroke topweight with 58.5kg. The Clayton Douglas -trained star sprinter carried 54.5kg in this month's Group 1 The Goodwood in Adelaide when third behind Reserve Bank and Sir Sway. @bendorries76 — Racenet (@RacenetTweets) May 26, 2025 Only two Stradbroke winners have carried more than 56kg to win in the last 40 years (Rough Habit and Campaign King). Campaign King was also the last horse to win the Doomben 10,000-Stradbroke double, in 1988, with this year's 10,000 champion Sunshine in Paris is enjoying a spell before the classy mare is set for a tilt at The Everest at Randwick in October. Queensland star Antino was given 58kg for the Straddie but the Tony Gollan -trained gelding will be spelled and set for a Cox Plate campaign following his devastating victory in the Doomben Cup (2000m) last weekend.

Boom youngster Bosustow on new path to Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap

Connections of key Stradbroke Handicap fancy Bosustow have tweaked their thinking and will strongly consider a fresh plan to tackle another Group 1 race on the way to the Stradbroke. With his triple-figure rating, the three-year-old colt who trounced his opposition by six lengths in last Saturday's Gold Coast Guinea s seems assured of getting a start in the Stradbroke next month. • PUNT LIKE A PRO: Become a Racenet iQ member and get expert tips – with fully transparent return on investment statistics – from Racenet's team of professional punters at our Pro Tips section. SUBSCRIBE NOW! After that booming win, and with two career Group 1 placings to his name as well as the Magic Millions Guineas in January, Bosustow is the equal second pick at $11 for the 2025 Stradbroke. Bosustow is named after Australian Rules great Peter Bosustow who passed away recently. Rarely has a three-year-old zoomed into Stradbroke contention with such a high rating. Bosustow loves racing at @GCTurfClub! He dominates the Gold Coast Guineas for @ANeashamRacing ðŸ'° — SKY Racing (@SkyRacingAU) May 10, 2025 It had been intended the colt would next be seen in the Group 3 Fred Best Classic at Eagle Farm on May 31, with that race offering the winning three-year-old a golden ticket into the Stradbroke. But with his Stradbroke spot seemingly assured, it now appears likely the plan will change and Bosustow would have a crack at the Group 1 Kingsford Smith Cup which is on the same day as the Fred Best. Bosustow is not among nominations for the Kingsford Smith, meaning connections of the Annabel and Rob Archibald -trained youngster would have to fork out a $25,500 fee when final nominations are due on May 27. • Wet the key to Wealth in Group 1 Doomben 10,000 'I have spoken to the (Queensland) chief handicapper who has suggested with his rating it would be enough to get him into the Stradbroke as it stands,' Bosustow's managing owner Anthony Mithen said. 'Given that we have already tested him at weight-for-age level – albeit in New Zealand where he ran second to Here To Shock – we have probably got a little bit of confidence to say he could be up to that level. 'We have to think, why would we be running in the Fred Best given it looks like he is already in the Stradbroke? 'There's no apparent reason really not to run in Kingsford Smith, as our springboard into the Straddy.' Given he does not hold a nomination for the Kingsford Smith, Bosustow is not currently included in wagering markets on the race which have Giga Kick and Joliestar as the equal $4.50 favourites. Bosustow was rated 101 before his Guineas romp on the Gold Coast last Saturday – made even more meritorious by the fact his trainers were considering scratching him on race morning as they didn't think he would enjoy the heavy track. He is receiving a further ratings bump. After Bosustow's dominant win, Rosemont Stud boss Mithen received a text message from Peter Bosustow's widow Shelley. It read, simply, 'Pete would be so happy to see the Bosustow horse win today. Congratulations.'

Sydney Bowler finding rhythm and ready to make breakthrough

It's taken some time for Sydney Bowler to get his groove back after a dramatic day on the Gold Coast in January last year that could have cost him more than just 12 months of his racing career. The scenes prior to that Gold Coast Guineas, when Sydney Bowler flipped in the barriers and became wedged, have been well documented. After being nursed back to full health, the four-year-old has had four runs without success but co-trainer Tom Charlton says the signs are there he's turned the corner. Charlton said on the back of a luckless fifth on Anzac Day he feels Sydney Bowler has his chance in the Vinnie Three-Time Champion Sire Handicap (1400m) at Kensington today – if he can gain a start. Sydney Bowler, $4.20 with TAB on Tuesday, is second emergency with Saturday's Scone meeting a fallback if scratchings don't fall his way. 'He was needing some positive experiences at the races and each time we've stepped him out he's done that and last time he behaved beautifully at the races,' Charlton said. 'It was a high-stress experience [at the Gold Coast] and that's probably a bit of his characteristic. He is kind natured but can get hot and bothered at times and that was reflecting in his racing. 'He didn't get warm before the gates [last start] which has been a thing with him and he executed his race well. We think we're progressing the right way, and we're particularly happy with the way he's going.' The gelding found all sorts of trouble in the run when he was beaten 1-1/2 lengths by Thunderlips on Anzac Day and Charlton said aside from the lack of luck it showed Sydney Bowler is close to a deserved win.

Bosustow wins Gold Coast Guineas in honour of late Australian Rules footballer Peter Bosustow

Peter Bosustow would have loved it. Young colt Bosustow not only honoured the late Australian Rules footballer he is named after but also rocketed into Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap contention with a stunning Gold Coast Guineas win. Bosustow is named after Peter Bosustow, known as 'the Buzz', who won two VFL premierships with the Carlton Blues in the 1980s and the West Australian passed away recently. • PUNT LIKE A PRO: Become a Racenet iQ member and get expert tips – with fully transparent return on investment statistics – from Racenet's team of professional punters at our Pro Tips section. The three-year-old colt was an accidental hero on the Gold Coast on Saturday with co-trainer Annabel Archibald revealing she considered scratching him on race morning when the track was posted as heavy. How wrong she would have been to scratch and it was a sliding doors moment when Archibald and her co-trainer, husband Rob, decided to start the exciting youngster. He scooted to an emphatic six-length win on a Heavy 9 track and he clearly loves the Gold Coast, having won the $3m Magic Millions Guineas at the same track in January. Bosustow's rating virtually guarantees him a start in next month's Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap. When Stradbroke betting opened, he was a $51 chance and he firmed from $26 to equal $11 second pick on Saturday after his dazzling Guineas win. Bosustow loves racing at @GCTurfClub! He dominates the Gold Coast Guineas for @ANeashamRacing ðŸ'° â€' SKY Racing (@SkyRacingAU) May 10, 2025 'It was an amazing win and I'm sure Peter Bosustow was carrying him the whole way there, because it was dominant,' Archibald said. 'He's twice Group 1 placed, so hopefully we can go one better. 'We're here for a three-pronged attack, it's on to the Fred Best Classic next and then the Stradbroke is his grand final. 'I had messaged Mitho (owner Anthony Mithen) at 6.30am this morning to say that I wasn't sure about a heavy track. 'He didn't handle a Soft 7 track 12 months ago, so I was a little bit worried.' Jockeys came back after the Guineas covered in mud, but winning hoop Josh Parr was grinning from ear to ear. Parr, who also won the Magic Millions Guineas on Bosustow, said the strong speed of the Guineas helped Bosustow explode to victory. 'That was very enjoyable,' Parr said. 'The moment I found the position on the fence, I was really confident due to the speed of the race. 'He relished the ground, pulled me into the race at the top of the straight. 'Just after his two softish recent trials, I was hoping the track didn't bring him undone and leave him vulnerable. 'But I trusted his ability, and I was glad to get the victory.' Mithen and his business partners have a syndicate where they name young colts after football legends. Peter Bosustow, one of the most electrifying players of the era, passed away recently but in his final years had struck up a friendship with Mithen due to the naming of the colt.
