[UPDATED] Ex-Penang Deputy CM Dr P. Ramasamy to face CBT charges tomorrow

KUALA LUMPUR: Former Penang Deputy Chief Minister II, Dr P. Ramasamy, is set to face charges for criminal breach of trust tomorrow. Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki confirmed this to the New Straits Times today. "The charges are related to the procurement of the Golden Chariot in 2017, as well as welfare assistance distributed through the Penang Hindu Endowments Board (PHEB)," he said. He added that Ramasamy would be charged at the Penang Court tomorrow. In December, Ramasamy expressed his disappointment after being barred from leaving the country by the MACC, which prevented him from attending an event in Aceh. The former DAP secretary-general was scheduled to receive a peace award from Wali Nanggroe Aceh, the head of state of the Indonesian semi-autonomous province, for his efforts in mediating peace between the central government and the separatist group Free Aceh Movement (GAM). However, his travel plans were halted due to an investigation into the Penang Hindu Endowments Board (PHEB), where he served as chairman. While acknowledging the ongoing investigation into the PHEB, Ramasamy said he had not been contacted or questioned regarding the matter. "How is it that I suddenly became a wanted man in this country?" he said.
