SIFF opens with record-breaking premiere rate
SHANGHAI, June 16, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- A news report from The 27th Shanghai International Film Festival (SIFF) raised the curtain on June 13, launching 10 days of cinematic celebration that will run through June 22. With a record-breaking lineup and a dynamic fusion of art and industry, this year's festival sets a new benchmark in scale, diversity, and ambition. The 27th SIFF received more than 3,900 submissions from 119 countries and regions, the highest total in its history. Among them, more than 2,800 films were submitted for competition in the five Golden Goblet Award categories. Notably, this year's festival includes more than 1,820 world premieres and over 520 international premieres. The combined premiere rate exceeds 80 percent, setting a new festival record. The Golden Goblet jury — comprising 21 members from 13 countries and regions —is chaired by Italian director Giuseppe Tornatore. The jury includes a younger-than-usual cohort of creatives, especially in the Asian New Talent category, with an average age of just 35. Their diverse backgrounds and fresh perspectives are expected to bring bold insights to this year's selections. Film lovers can look forward to over 400 films screened across approximately 1,500 sessions, including around 100 in-person Q&A sessions with filmmakers. These screenings cover a wide range of genres, themes, and styles, reflecting SIFF's commitment to both artistic excellence and audience engagement. In addition to the film showcase, industry-focused events will shine a spotlight on the future of cinema. The SIFFORUM, SIFF Masterclass, and International Film & TV Market will gather top professionals for high-level discussions, trend forecasting, and cross-border collaboration. SIFF also continues to support emerging talent. This year's SIFF ING focuses on two cutting-edge creative tracks — AIGC and vertical video — to discover, encourage, and nurture the next generation of filmmakers. Related events will be held from June 20 to 21. Shanghai Jury Chair Giuseppe Tornatore Says Picking Film Fest Winners 'Is Actually Very Simple'
Oscar-winner Giuseppe Tornatore, jury head of the 27th Shanghai International Film Festival (SIFF), says he will be looking for films that touch his heart as he chairs selection of this year's Golden Goblet Award winners. 'When I enter a film screening and close my eyes, I always return to the feeling of being an audience member,' Tornatore said Friday during the Shanghai jury's meeting with the international media. 'I always hope that the film will bring me a pleasant surprise every time I go to the cinema.'The Italian filmmaker is best known for his Academy Award-winner Cinema Paradiso (1988), a film in which a young boy is swept away by the magic of the movies — and the 69-year-old Tornatore said that was the feeling he would be chasing throughout SIFF's 10-day run. 'For us judges, actually choosing who will eventually win should be a simple matter. The movie that wins an award must be able to touch the depths of each judge's heart. Looking at it this way, this selection process is actually very simple.' Tornatore is joined on Shanghai's main jury by a trio of Chinese talent — director Yang Lina, actor-director Huang Bo and actress Yong Mei — alongside Argentinean filmmaker Iván Fund, Greek producer Thanassis Karathanos and Indian director Kiran Rao. The group's task is to choose from 12 wildly diverse international productions, which were shortlisted from a record 3,900 submissions, according to festival organizers. On the local front, Chinese director Wang Tong's ambitious genre-bender Wild Nights, Tamed Beasts, which mixes noir-tinged drama with social realism, generated some of the most vocal buzz this week during SIFF's pre-festival media preview screenings. The other Chinese features in the main competition are fest-favorite Cao Baoping's high-voltage comedy One Wacky Summer and Qiu Sheng's domestic drama My Father's Son. SIFF is keen to hype its role as a window into talents and trends emerging in Chinese cinema. The event is screening around 60 Chinese-language movies across its five competitions, including several world premieres and restored classics. For their part, the Golden Goblet jury is keen to dig in. 'I very happy that three Chinese films have been nominated this time, but of course, there are many other excellent films from all over the world that have been nominated, too,' said Huang. 'This diversity actually ensures that the final outcome is very honest. It's like if we all drank the same drink. Some would like spicy, sweet, salty or slightly bitter flavors. This kind of balance is really important. It ensures a certain level of objectivity that makes everyone feel more rational.' There's also early buzz surrounding Swiss director Nicolas Steiner's hypnotic dive into magical realism, You Believe in Angels, Mr. Drowak? (Germany, Switzerland); Poland's tension-packed theater-based drama Loss of Balance (Korek Bojanowski); and Portuguese director António Ferreira's The Scent of Things Remembered (Portugal-Brazil), which stars the impressive José Martins as a former soldier forced to confront his demons. Rounding out the selection is the Chile/U.K./France co-production After the Fog from British-German filmmaker Miriam Heard, Black Red Yellow (Kyrgyzstan) from Aktan Arym Kubat, Flavia Castro's Cyclone (Brazil), Luisa from Germany's Julia Roesler, Japan's On Summer Sand by Shinya Tamada, and the Argentina/Spain/Chile co-production The Reborn from Santiago Esteves. 27th Shanghai International Film Festival Kicks Off with a Wave of Chinese Cinema
SHANGHAI, June 13, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- The 27th Shanghai International Film Festival (SIFF) officially opened today, reaffirming its status as a premier platform for Chinese-language cinema. This year, 43 cinemas across Shanghai and 5 cinemas throughout the Yangtze River Delta will showcase more than 400 films from 71 countries and regions, offering approximately 1,500 screenings. Notably, the Golden Goblet Awards will announce the winners on June 21. On June 13, SIFF brought together the full international jury of the Golden Goblet Awards Main Competition, representing 13 countries and regions across Asia, Africa, the Americas and Europe. They appeared together on stage and spoke to the press, reflecting the festival's global reach and cultural diversity. World-renowned Italian filmmaker Giuseppe Tornatore will chair the jury panel of the Main Competition section, he said: "Film is the love of everyone and I hope these selected movies can really surprise and enchant me. I think the best of these works are sure to touch the hearts of each jury member." The Red Carpet of the 27th Shanghai International Film Festival Gala Night is scheduled for the evening of June 14. Tickets in High Demand, Red Carpet Dazzles The festival offers a symphonic poem of classics and contemporary works from both domestic and international cinema, featuring nearly 40 different sections for film enthusiasts. On the day tickets went on general sale, more than 1,500 screenings of over 400 films with approximately 30% presented in 4K resolution were made available to filmgoers. Among them, 92 films with over 600 showings sold out quickly. To meet overwhelming demand from filmgoers, SIFF opened ticket sales for additional screenings at noon on June 11, adding 7 new showings to the lineup. By that time, ticket sales had reached 459,600, achieving a record-breaking sell-out rate of 73%, with more than 30% of attendees traveling from outside Shanghai. The screening featuring the Golden Goblet Best Director winner sold out in just 26 seconds, with tickets available before the winner was announced. This left filmgoers in suspense about which film they would be watching until the reveal. This year's film festival dazzled on the red carpet, attracting over 200 distinguished guests from around the world along the Huangpu River, offering audiences a captivating visual feast where cinema meets charm. The film crew of the opening film, She's Got No Name, along with the creators of upcoming summer blockbusters such as Dongji Island, A Cool Fish, The Litchi Road, and The Shadow's Edge, will be joined by the nominees from the Golden Goblet main competition and the Asian New Talent Award. Over 200 international stars, including the judges of the Golden Goblet Awards, will gather by the Huangpu River on the evening of the 14th. On June 17, the 2025 Chinese Movie Blockbuster Showcase will highlight major domestic productions. The festival's international jury includes 21 members from around the globe.
