Islanders global release: Where to stream the cross-regional Taiwanese drama and when it premieres

Taiwan is set to make another global splash in television with the release of Islanders, a gripping new drama arriving on July 18. Its worldwide rollout is a major step for Taiwanese content, becoming only the second series from the country - after The World Between Us: After the Flames - to stream internationally on Prime Video. Unmasking scandal in the digital age Islanders takes viewers to the early 2010s, as Taipei's social norms begin to fracture under the weight of rising online culture. The series centers on a respected businessman whose carefully constructed life begins to unravel when his romantic entanglements - with his wife, a longtime mistress, and a younger lover - are thrust into public view after a viral outburst at a private dinner. As his influence wanes and resurges in unexpected ways, his loyal assistant faces a personal reckoning in a society where reputation, loyalty, and progress collide. A diverse, award-winning cast Leading the drama is Christopher Lee, a household name across Southeast Asia. Joining him are Wu Kang-Jen, a two-time winner at both the Golden Horse and Golden Bell Awards; Rima Zeidan, celebrated for her emotionally rich performances; veteran talent Yu Tzu-Yu; and Japanese actor Yusuke Fukuchi. Direction is handled by Ler Jiyuan - best known for Invisible Stories on HBO Asia - and Tsai Pao-Chang, a veteran of Taiwan's theatre scene. The production was shot in Taiwan and across the U.S., including sequences in New York and Alaska. Streaming availability across regions In Taiwan, Singapore, and Indonesia, Islanders will stream on Catchplay+, while Line TV (Taiwan) and Now TV (Hong Kong) will carry the series in their respective regions. For global viewers, Islanders will stream on Prime Video in over 240 countries and territories — with the exception of Taiwan, South Korea, China, Hong Kong, and Macau. The series will also air weekly on the Catchplay Movie Channel in Taiwan. A literary adaptation with cinematic scale The series is adapted from Islands, a novel by Lolita (Ching-Fang) Hu, who is acclaimed for her nuanced explorations of Taiwanese identity, morality, and shifting generational values. Behind the production is Screenworks Asia, the original content arm of Catchplay+, co-producing with Jollify Creative. Founded in 2020 in partnership with the Taiwan Creative Content Agency (TAICCA), Screenworks aims to develop world-class Taiwanese programming with cross-border appeal.

Emerald Hill actor Xiu Jie Kai recognised by tourists in Taiwan

Blockbuster drama series Emerald Hill may have wrapped its run in Singapore, but fans clearly have not forgotten the show or its cast. Especially not Taiwanese actor Xiu Jie Kai who played Zhang Jin He, better known as the er shao ye (second son) of the Zhang family. In a video posted on YouTube, the 42-year-old was out shopping with his wife, Taiwanese actress, Alyssa Chia, 50, when a woman suddenly exclaimed in Mandarin, 'Little Nonya?' Emerald Hill is a spin-off of the 2008 mega hit The Little Nonya, and it appears that this group of fans, likely Singaporeans, instantly recognised Jie Kai. Caught off guard, Xiu gave an embarrassed smile while Chia smirked and playfully confirmed their suspicions, teasing, 'Yes, you guessed correctly! Go get his autograph quickly' before cheekily stepping aside to let her husband deal with the excited fans. Of course, it was all in good fun as Chia was seen helping them take pictures as Xiu proudly introduced her as his wife. Wait, shouldn't Chia be in the shot too? She is also an established actress in her own right, even winning a Golden Horse award for Best Actress in 2021. As she walked away, Chia mused with a laugh, 'Wah… Xiu Jie Kai is very popular now. Being with him, I feel the pressure.' A proud-looking Xiu then caught up with her and said: 'Now you know how happy you will feel when we go out together?' With Emerald Hill now airing on Taiwan's TVBS 42, and continuing to be a major hit much like in Singapore and Malaysia, fan encounters like this might become the new normal for Xiu. The series has already racked up more than 1.77 million views on TVBS' social media platforms since it debuted on Apr 6.

Confessions Wraps Filming: Eastern Dark Aesthetics Meet the Abyss of Human Nature, Elevating Chinese Drama to New Heights

SHANGHAI, CHINA – Media OutReach Newswire – 8 May 2025 – Confessions, a psychological suspense series written and directed by Wong Ching-Po and starring Ethan Juan, Gingle Wang, Alyssa Chia, Yi-Wen Chen, and Vivian Sung, officially wrapped filming on May 3. Hosted by Bowie Tsang, the press conference gathered the full cast and creative team. The set, featuring tree root installations and a Mondrian-inspired carpet, was meticulously designed. With a stellar team including multiple Golden Horse and Golden Bell Award winners, Confessions has drawn strong interest from international markets. Creative Roundtable: Elite Team Continues the Legacy, Delving Into the Gray Areas of Human Nature The series, from the creative team behind The Pig, The Snake, and The Pigeon, underwent four months of preparation and 120 days of filming. Building on the 'violent aesthetics and philosophical musings' of its predecessor, Confessions adds socially conscious suspense elements that heighten the narrative's intensity and complexity. It delves deeper into psychological issues such as family trauma and moral conflict. Ethan Juan shared that his character, Lin San, has a complex inner journey that mirrors many aspects of his own life. He described the experience as if he were stepping into Lin San's shoes, not only portraying the character's life but also undergoing a personal choice of his own throughout the process. First Teaser: Stark Aesthetics Hit Home At the press conference, the teaser trailer 'Destined Suspense' was unveiled. With chilling lighting and intense sound design, it builds a bold aesthetic that amplifies suspense. The trailer reveals the characters' psychological unraveling as they navigate family feuds and moral entanglements across two generations, drawing viewers into hidden truths and the abyss of human nature. Eight character stills and a themed poster were unveiled, using black-and-white tones to evoke a sense of psychological warfare and mystery, deepening the audience's immersion in the characters' minds. The series will be introduced to mainland China by Youhug Media and Youku, and exclusively streamed on Youku. Following the event, Confessions entered post-production. The team will fuse Eastern and Western cultural elements, using sharp editing and visual effects to help Chinese drama cross linguistic and regional borders. With its striking dark aesthetic and universal moral themes, the show aims to leave a bold mark on the psychological suspense genre and redefine the peak of Chinese storytelling.
