Kembla Grange stables unveil pair of exciting fillies at Moruya
A pair of Kembla-based two-year-old fillies, both on debut, can steal the show when they travel south to tackle the older horses at Monday's Moruya meeting. Spice Baby, an exciting daughter of 2018 Golden Gift winner Tassort in the Joseph Isle stable and drawn the inside, is likely to jump favourite in a Maiden Handicap over 1020m. But drawn just two places further out, the Kerry Parker yard unveils Miss Steffi, a well-bred and aptly named daughter of Group 2-winning Graff. Spice Baby has been strong through the line in two lead-up trials and draws to get a cosy run, while Miss Steffi also starts behind two recent trials, winning the first at home before given a quieter time at Rosehill only six days ago. Named after the tennis great, Miss Steffi is bred to get much further being out of a Carnegie mare, and will be aimed at some feature middle-distance affairs in early spring if she heads in the right direction. Spice Baby, out of a mare by 2005 Golden Slipper winner Stratum and to be ridden by Louise Day, is more the sprinting type and opened about $3.70 in early betting alongside Canberra-based Caravanserai, an ex-Godolphin three-year-old having his first run in six months for the new Natalie Jarvis stable. Miss Steffi, to be ridden by Adrian Layt, was further out about the $7 mark. Meanwhile, the far-reaching success of Canberra stables is set to continue, headed by the Matthew Kelley yard which heads to the South Coast eyeing off a double. Loading

Canterbury preview: Signor Tortoni to add to long partnership
Don't miss out on the headlines from Horse Racing. Followed categories will be added to My News. A working relationship stretching back six decades is still fruitful for Ron Quinton and the Tait family that can land further success with the promising Signor Tortoni. Quinton career as a jockey netted winners for the Tait's including a Canterbury win on two-year-old Baguette against open age sprinters before he won the Golden Slipper in 1970. 'I certainly go back a long way with the Tait family,' said Quinton. 'I rode for Sandy and Kathy Tait and his sister, Jill Nivison. I also rode for their parents (Griff and Daisy). 'They are great racing people and it is a pleasure to train for them.' Sandy Tait and Jill Nivison bred and race Signor Tortoni who is from a half-sister to their champion galloper, Tie The Knot. Trainer Ron Quinton saddles up two favourites at Canterbury on Wednesday. Picture: Getty Images Signor Tortoni is also a half-brother to the stakes winner Cherry Tortoni and Wings Of Song. The gelding has shown Quinton that he possess his share of ability, placing runner-up in three of his first four starts before breaking his maiden at Gosford with a four length win from Justice Warrior. 'It was a very good win. The only thing that surprised me is that I thought he would have broken through before that,' Quinton said. 'Anyway, he has done it now and let's hope he can go on with it.' The son of Too Darn Hot is favourite to make it back-to-back win in the Asahi Super Dry Handicap (1200m) with Jason Collett aboard. 'His gallops at home have always been good and we thought he might develop into a really nice horse. Hopefully that might still be the case,' he said. 'He is still lightly-raced and the family does get better with time. I certainly hope the best is still to come with him.' Quinton's other runner is Bryant who is favourite in the TAB Handicap (1200m). The two-year-old son of Brutal resumed with a handy fourth to Miss Freelove at Canterbury in April before aa second to the progressive Raging Force on the Kensington on June 25. 'He is a horse who has got a bit of talent as well,' Quinton said. 'It was a handy effort last start behind a horse who came out and won again impressively at Rosehill last Saturday. 'I have said all along he will be a much better three-year-old so it's nice to see him showing what he is at this stage.'

1937 2YOs entered for the 2026 Golden Slipper
Almost 2000 yearlings have been entered for next year's 70th running of Australia's most significant breed-shaping race, the Group 1 $5m Golden Slipper at Rosehill Gardens on March 21. The 2026 Golden Slipper nominations are made up by 953 colts and geldings and 984 fillies, totalling 1937 juvenile entries. Australian breeding and racing's newest superpower Yulong Investments has a 5.93 per cent chance of claiming their first Golden Slipper win, having the most horses entered with 115 juveniles nominated. Eight-time Golden Slipper winner Gai Waterhouse and her two-time winning training partner Adrian Bott sit behind Yulong with 107 entries. Other operations with big entry numbers are Godolphin (95), Chris Waller Racing (94) and Ciaron Maher Racing (91). Last year's winning trainer Michael Freedman has 60 entries, 32 colts and 28 fillies, four of those yearlings are by the ill-fated Snitzel, the sire of the 2025 Golden Slipper winner Marhoona. 'The Golden Slipper is iconic in world racing and plays such a pivotal role for the Australian racing and breeding industry,' Australian Turf Club Head of Racing and Wagering Nevesh Ramdhani said. 'We are delighted to see such an emerging organisation such as Yulong nominating so many horses along with the biggest stables across Australia.' Leading the sires list for the 2026 Golden Slipper is former champion stallion I Am Invincible with 90 entries, while another former champion stallion Snitzel has 72 entries in his second last crop while this season's soon to be crowned champion Australian stallion Zoustar has 61 of his yearlings nominated for the world's richest two-year-old race. Highly regarded first season stallions in 2025/26 are also represented. Home Affairs has 75 entries while the 2021 Golden Slipper winner Stay Inside has 66 of his crop nominated. Entries for other stallions of note include Wooton Bassett (57), Too Darn Hot (56), Written Tycoon (51), 2020 Golden Slipper winner Farnan (45) and this season's leading first season sire Ole Kirk (40).

2024-25 Champion Australian Racehorse awards nominees
Don't miss out on the headlines from Horse Racing. Followed categories will be added to My News. The Horse of the Year award is a lock but try selecting the champion two-year-old or the best three-year-old filly. The three-year-old male award is up for grabs, the title of best sprinter isn't cut and dried, and neither is the stayer category for that matter. Unlike most years when these awards are reasonably predictable, most of the 2025 Champion Australian Racehorse award categories are wide open with the obvious exception of Horse of the Year which the Chris Waller-trained Via Sistina will win by about as far as her spectacular eight lengths Cox Plate romp last spring. The two-year-old award is one of the tightest as there was a different winner of each of the five Group 1 juvenile races this season including Marhoona and Devil Night who both scored their only stakes win in the Golden Slipper and Blue Diamond respectively. • PUNT LIKE A PRO: Become a Racenet iQ member and get expert tips – with fully transparent return on investment statistics – from Racenet's team of professional punters at our Pro Tips section. Nepotism won the Group 1 Champagne Stakes and Group 3 Baillieu Handicap while Vinrock was unbeaten in three starts and became first horse since Full On Aces (1981) to win the Group 2 VRC Sires Produce Stakes and Group 1 ATC Sires Produce Stakes double. Cool Archie made a late season surge with five consecutive wins including the Listed Dalrello Stakes, Group 2 Champagne Classic, Group 2 BRC Sires Produce Stakes and Group 1 JJ Atkins. Even Tempted — who won twice at Group 2 level and was luckless in the Blue Diamond (seventh) and Golden Slipper (third) – O' Ole (Magic Millions) and Within The Law will have some support. The three-year-old filly division is also very contentious. Treasurethe Moment won eight races in succession including the VRC Oaks-ATC Australian Oaks double and Vinery Stud Stakes at Group 1 level but how does that compare to Lady Shenandoah's unbeaten season of five wins featuring Group 1 successes in the Flight Stakes and Surround Stakes and her defeat of older mares in the Coolmore Classic? The contenders for the major gongs in the 2025 Champion Austraian Racehorse awards. Picture: Winx wins the 2025 Queen Elizabeth Stakes. Aeliana's outstanding ATC Australian Derby win by more than five lengths puts her into the conversation, Autumn Glow is unbeaten after four starts with three at stakes level, and Lady Of Camelot might have been winless this season but she was placed four times at Group 1 level and ran fourth in The Everest. Broadsiding (Golden Rose, Rosehill Guineas) was the only multiple Group 1 winner in the three-year-old male division but unbeaten Private Harry (The Galaxy), Linebacker (Randwick Guineas, defeating Broadsiding), Switzerland (Coolmore Stud Stakes), Private Life (Caulfield Guineas) and Maison Louis (Queensland Derby) will collate votes. It's anyone's guess for Champion Sprinter. Did Bella Nipotina do enough winning The Everest (and Russell Balding Stakes) to edge out dual Group 1 winners Joliestar (Newmarket Handicap, Kingsford Smith Cup) and Jimmysstar (Oakleigh Plate, All Aged Stakes), or Briasa (TJ Smith Stakes), Overpass (Winterbottom Stakes) and Schwarz (William Reid Stakes)? • Richard Callander: Forget wagering – this is racing's biggest battle Champion Stayer often goes to the Melbourne Cup winner but this was Knight's Choice's only win of the season which brings the likes of Duke De Sessa (Caulfield Cup), Dubai Honour (Tancred Stakes), Arapaho (Sydney Cup, Sandown Classic), Campaldino (Brisbane Cup), Alalcance (Manion Cup, Chairman's Quality), Land Legend (The Metropolitan) and Zardozi into the mix. But champion mare Via Sistina was the standout of 2024-25, winning seven of her nine starts, all at Group 1 level to equal the record for most majors in a season set by all-time great Winx in 2018-19. • Via Sistina is back … and she'll again blaze her record-breaking trail Via Sistina also won the Winx Stakes, Turnbull Stakes, Champions Stakes, Verry Elleegant Stakes, Ranvet Stakes and Queen Elizabeth Stakes over distances ranging from 1400m to 2000m so she will also claim the Middle Distance award, too. With Via Sistina certain to win Horse of the Year, it will be the eighth time in 10 years a Waller-trained galloper has won the coveted title. Waller also prepared the only four-time Horse of the Year winner, Winx (2015-16, 2016-17, 2017-18, 2018-19), as well as Nature Strip (2019-20, 2021-22), and Verry Elleegant (2020-2021). Selected racing officials and media start voting on the awards this week with the winners announced at a special Hall of Fame-Horse of the Year function in Brisbane on August 31.
