Last Updated: Guru Arjan Dev Martyrdom Day 2025: The fifth Sikh Guru, was martyred on May 30, 1606, by Emperor Jahangir. Guru Arjan Dev Martyrdom Day 2025: Guru Arjan Dev was the fifth Guru of Sikhism. He was born on April 15, 1563, in Goindwal, which is now part of Punjab, India. He is highly regarded for his major contributions to the Sikh faith, including starting the construction of Amritsar's Harmandir Sahib, famously known as the Golden Temple. Guru Arjan took over as the Sikh Guru in 1581, succeeding his father, Guru Ram Das. Building on the foundation laid by his predecessors, he played a vital role in strengthening Sikhism. He is also regarded as the first Sikh Guru to be martyred. Among his key accomplishments was the compilation of the Adi Granth, which eventually became the Guru Granth Sahib, the core scripture of Sikhism. He gathered the writings of the first four Gurus, along with selected hymns from various saints, uniting them in the Adi Granth. Guru Arjan Dev was martyred on May 30, 1606, by the order of the Mughal Emperor Jahangir. While historical records vary, the most widely accepted account describe Guru Arjan's arrest and brutal torture. He was taken to Lahore, where he endured severe torture, including being forced to sit on a heated iron plate while boiling sand was poured over him. Despite the immense pain, Guru Arjan Dev stayed serene and composed, reciting hymns from the Adi Granth throughout his ordeal. According to records, Jahangir viewed Guru Arjan Dev's influence as a threat to imperial rule. The Guru was accused of supporting rebellious activities and aiding Jahangir's eldest son Khusrau Mirza, who had challenged the emperor's authority. Guru Arjan Dev's martyrdom had a profound impact on history and deeply strengthened the determination of the Sikh community. It became a key turning point, inspiring Sikhs to resist persecution and injustice. This struggle eventually led to the Sikh faith becoming more militarised under the leadership of Guru Arjan Dev's son, Guru Hargobind Sahib. Apart from compiling the Adi Granth and starting the construction of Harmandir Sahib, here are some of the most important achievements of Guru Arjan Dev: Guru Arjan Dev devoted great effort to spreading Sikh teachings. He stressed the significance of following the Guru's teachings, maintaining devotion to God, and practicing selfless service. His work helped draw many new followers. Even today, his teachings and writings remain a vital source of guidance for Sikhs worldwide. Guru Arjan Dev promoted social equality and started the tradition of langar, a community kitchen that served free meals to everyone, regardless of caste or social status. This practice encouraged unity and equality. Guru Arjan Dev actively encouraged the growth of arts, literature, and music within the Sikh community. He composed many hymns that are part of the Guru Granth Sahib. Additionally, he inspired and supported prominent musicians and poets of his era, helping to enrich and elevate Sikh cultural and artistic heritage. First Published:

Pakistan rejects Indian allegations it tried to launch attack on Golden Temple
ISLAMABAD: The ministry of foreign affairs on Tuesday 'categorically' rejected allegations by a senior Indian army officer that Pakistan had attempted to target the Golden Temple in the Indian city of Amritsar using drones and missiles earlier this month. During a media briefing in Amritsar on Monday, Major General Kartik C Seshadri, General Officer Commanding of the 15 Infantry Division, said the Golden Temple was directly targeted in the recent wave of attacks as India and Pakistan engaged in their worst fighting in decades between May 7-10, which ultimately ended with a US-brokered a ceasefire. He said the Indian army's air defense gunners shot down all drones and missiles Pakistan had launched at the Golden Temple. The Pakistani foreign office spokesperson called Seshadri's comments 'baseless and incorrect.' 'We categorically reject the allegations that Pakistan attempted to target the Golden Temple, the most revered place in the Sikh faith. We hold all places of worship in the highest esteem and cannot think of targeting a holy site like the Golden Temple,' the spokesperson said in a statement. He said Pakistan was the 'proud custodian' of numerous sacred sites belonging to the Sikh faith and annually hosted thousands of Sikh pilgrims from around the world, providing visa-free access to the historic Gurdwara Sahib Kartarpur through the Kartarpur Corridor. 'In that backdrop, any claim concerning Pakistan's attempt to target the Golden Temple is absolutely baseless and incorrect,' the spokesperson added. At least 60 people died in fighting earlier this month triggered by an April 22 attack on tourists in Indian-administered Kashmir that New Delhi accused Islamabad of backing, a charge Pakistan denies. Muslim-majority Kashmir is claimed in full by both countries, which have fought multiple wars over the Himalayan territory since their 1947 independence from Britain.

"We stand shoulder-to-shoulder with our forces": Amritsar locals praise Indian Army for protecting civilian lives
Amritsar (Punjab) [India], May 19 (ANI): In the aftermath of conflict between India and Pakistan, the locals in Amritsar and nearby villages stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the armed forces, who they say dedicated all efforts to protect religious sites in the border areas, including the Golden Temple. An elderly local from a village in Amritsar said that the residents were assisting the armed forces to the best of their abilities and stood with them since they protected the entire city and civilian lives from air assault by Pakistan during the conflict. 'We are trying to assist the forces as much as possible... The drones flew the other day, but they brought down each one of them. They protected Sri Harmandir Sahib (The Golden Temple) and the rest of the city. They also protected the rest of the religious places. We stand with our forces shoulder-to-shoulder,' the elderly man told ANI. Jasbir Singh, another local from a village near the India-Pakistan border, praises the Indian Army for securing the border and ensuring the safe stay of civilians in the cities near the border areas of Punjab. 'Our army is the pride of our nation... We are able to live in our cities because our army secures our borders... It is because of them that we are living here peacefully. In the tensions that arose in recent days, the army came here near our village and fields. We stood with our army as much as we could, and they also fulfilled the promise of protecting us,' Singh told ANI. Meanwhile, the soldiers of the Panther Division of the Indian Army remain in alert mode, full of enthusiasm, displaying a glimpse of their valour. Speaking to ANI, the soldiers said that they have been trained to enter and kill the enemy from within. 'We are representatives of the will enter and kill the enemy from within, now we don't fear anyone. There is revenge in the mind, there is passion in the heart and pride in the eyes. To uproot terrorism, India has launched Operation Sindoor,' the soldiers said. The Indian Army's Air defence systems played a critical role in repelling Pakistan's misadventures. The Army on Monday showcased a demonstration of how Indian Air Defence systems, including AKASH missile system, L-70 Air Defence Guns, saved the Golden Temple in Amritsar and cities of Punjab from Pakistani missile and drone attacks. India's Air Defence Systems proved their prowess at the height of the tensions between the two neighbours, intercepting numerous drones, missiles, micro UAVs, and loitering munitions, emerging as a globally actionable defence asset.
