These LIV Golf players are in danger of being relegated with 2 events left
Only three events are left in the LIV Golf League's third full season, and there are a couple notable names in danger of being relegated. There are three zones in the LIV Golf standings: Lock Zone, Open Zone and Relegation. The top 24 in the season-long standings will secure spots for next year, with final standings determined after LIV Golf Indianapolis. Those finishing Nos. 25-48 are in the Open Zone, which means these players can stay in the league, but their current team doesn't have to re-sign them if they have an expiring contract. Players finishing 49th or lower in the points standings after Indianapolis will be relegated from the league and can return only by playing their way back. They can do so by winning the International Series or through LIV Golf Promotions. In 2023, LIV Golf had 48 players compete in each tournament, with players avoiding relegation by finishing 44th or higher. The 44th player that season was Laurie Canter with 12 points. In 2024, LIV added one team and two other wld card spots for 54 players per event. All players finishing 48th or higher were safe from relegation. Pat Perez finished at 48th with 7.76 total points. Jon Rahm's Legion XIII officially signs Tom McKibbin, LIV Golf rosters set for 2025 season
With a week until the season-opening event in Saudi Arabia, the LIV Golf League rosters for 2025 are officially set. Tom McKibbin, who had long been rumored to signed with LIV Golf, was officially announced as the final member of Jon Rahm's Legion XIII on Wednesday, finalizing the league's rosters ahead of LIV Golf Riyadh. McKibbin is the biggest offseason signing for LIV Golf, though his name likely isn't notable to those in the United States. He grew up playing at the same club Rory McIlroy did in Holywood, Northern Ireland, and has looked up to the world No. 3 since he was a youngster. The two have become good friends, and last year when McKibbin locked up his PGA Tour card after finishing in the top 10 of the DP World Tour season-long standings, perhaps no one was happier for McKibbin than McIlroy. Earlier this month at the Hero Dubai Desert Classic, McIlroy said he talked plenty with McKibbin about the decision whether to sign with LIV Golf and he would be disappointed if his protege decided to give up his spot on the PGA Tour. "Yeah, look, it would be — personally for me it would be a little disappointing if it were to happen but again, it's not — I made it perfectly clear: I am not going to stand your way if you need to make the decision you feel like you need to make for yourself," McIlroy said. "But at the same time, I feel like he's giving up a lot to not really benefit that much, you know." McKibbin, only 22 years old, is ranked 106th in the world and is one of six newcomers on the LIV Golf League in 2024, joining Ben Campbell, Luis Masaveu, Frederik Kjettrup, Yubin Jang and Max Lee, who earned his spot via the LIV Golf Promotions event. LIV Golf begins its season next week under the lights.
