Gangster who killed businessman in Delhi gunned down
Five months after he gunned down the wrong man in a Delhi market, a sharpshooter from the Lawrence Bishnoi gang was killed in a police encounter in Uttar Pradesh's Hapur district on Wednesday night. Naveen Kumar, who had more than 20 cases of murder, kidnapping and robbery against him, died in a joint operation by the Delhi Police Special Cell and UP Special Task Force (STF) around 10.30 pm in the Hapur Kotwali area, marking the first arrest in the mistaken identity murder case. The gangster and his associate Sachin Golu had shot dead 52-year-old businessman Sunil Jain in Delhi's Farsh Bazaar area last December, firing nearly half a dozen bullets as he returned home on his two-wheeler from a morning walk at the Yamuna Sports Complex. Police later discovered that Jain was killed by mistake. The actual target was a man who, along with gangster Anil alias Sonu Matka, had planned the murder of Golu's friend Akash Sharma. The killing was part of a spiral of gang violence that began on Diwali when Matka and his aide shot dead Akash Sharma, 40, and his 16-year-old nephew Rishabh at their Farsh Bazaar home. A video of the double murder was uploaded on social media, triggering the revenge killing that claimed Jain's life. 'While Matka was held in an encounter, Kumar and Golu managed to hide for months. Golu is still hiding,' a senior police officer said. The case involved a deadly rivalry between the Lawrence Bishnoi and Hashim Baba gangs, with Matka being a close aide of Baba. Delhi police and UP STF had tracked down Matka to Meerut in December and killed him in an encounter. A breakthrough came in February when police arrested Delhi Police sub-inspector Sukhbir Singh for helping the fugitives. 'Based on technical surveillance and call records, we arrested sub-inspector Sukhbir Singh. We found he was helping Golu hide and sent him money,' the officer said. Following Singh's arrest, police intensified their search for Kumar and Golu. A tip-off revealed that Kumar had emerged from hiding in Hapur and was planning to target another rival gangster. Additional director general of police (STF) Amitabh Yash said the joint team from STF Noida unit and Delhi Police special cell came under fire when they tried to intercept a group of armed men in the Hapur area around 10.30 pm. 'A gun battle followed in which Naveen Kumar was seriously wounded. He was taken to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared him dead,' Yash said. The STF confirmed that Kumar was wanted in connection with a murder and Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) case registered at Delhi's Farsh Bazaar police station.

Delhi businessman murder: Alleged shooter shot dead in police encounter in UP's Hapur
A 38-year-old alleged criminal, who worked as a sharpshooter for jailed gangster Lawrence Bishnoi, was shot dead in Uttar Pradesh's Hapur late Wednesday by the Delhi Police Special Cell and Uttar Pradesh Police's Special Task Force (STF). According to the police, Naveen Kumar Kasana, a resident of Ghaziabad, was allegedly involved in the murder of a utensil businessman in Delhi's Farsh Bazar area in December last year. A senior police officer said Kasana was spotted on a motorcycle in Hapur late on Wednesday. Following this, a joint team of UP STF and Delhi Police Special Cell laid a trap, and challenged him to stop. 'Naveen opened fire at the police, and in retaliation, the team members also fired at him, injuring him. He was taken to the hospital, where doctors declared him dead,' the officer said. Another officer said Kasana was believed to be a sharpshooter of the Bishnoi gang, and also worked for another jailed gangster, Hashim Baba. In December 2024, Kasana, along with his associate Sachin alias Golu, shot a 52-year-old businessman, Sunil Jain, while he was on a morning walk near his house in the Farsh Bazar area of Delhi's Shahdara. The police later said Jain, who owned a utensils business, was murdered in a case of 'mistaken identity' by Golu and Kasana, as he had a similar physique and routine as that of the actual target. In February, the Special Cell had arrested a sub-inspector for allegedly sheltering Golu and Kasana and providing them with financial assistance. Besides facing charges under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA), Kasana also faces 20 cases related to murder, attempted murder, dacoity, and robbery. Golu has 11 cases filed against him, including ones related to house theft, attempt to murder, and under the Arms Act, among others. He has been arrested twice by the Delhi Police Special Cell, and several times by the officers of Welcome and Bhajanpura police stations in Northeast Delhi.

Deceived by their husbands, 2 UP women ‘marry' after finding love in each other
Bareilly: In a small temple not far from Bareilly's district court, two women stood side by side on Tuesday morning, surrounded not by family but by lawyers. There were no garlands or rituals steeped in tradition — only a shared decision to forge a new path together, one that diverged sharply from the ones they had once walked. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Each had been married to a man who withheld the truth about his religious identity, a deception that unravelled not just the legal contract of marriage but their sense of personal trust. What followed for both women was estrangement — from their families, social norms, and certainty itself. What brought them together was that shared fracture. Asha, 27, who now goes by the name Golu, lives in Delhi and works at a baby care centre. Jyoti, 29, is from Civil Lines in Budaun and is the elder of two sisters. When they met at a factory in Delhi three months ago, their conversations were, at first, simply a form of survival — trading stories, finding solidarity in small truths. But soon they noticed parallels that extended beyond coincidence. Both had been misled at a fundamental level by men they were expected to trust implicitly. Both had walked away, unsupported. Both were trying, quietly, to rebuild. Their closeness deepened not through grand gestures but through the accumulation of smaller moments — workday chats, shared meals, evenings filled with the rare comfort of not having to explain. Eventually, they began to imagine a life together. "We have lost trust in men," Jyoti said. "We decided to marry when we felt we understood each other." Theirs is not a legally recognised marriage, at least not under Indian law. But it is a declaration. "If our families support us, that's fine," Golu said. "Otherwise, we'll live together in Delhi. We plan to work, live well, and build a home when our budget allows."While the Supreme Court decriminalised same-sex relationships in 2018 by reading down Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code, same-sex marriages still hold no legal standing in India. Lawyer Diwakar Verma, who witnessed the temple wedding, said, "Two women approached us, expressing their desire to marry. The Constitution grants them the right to live together." Their decision echoes similar stories emerging from parts of Uttar Pradesh, where women — pushed to the margins by or — have sought solace and stability in companionship outside convention. In Jan 2025, two women from Deoria—Kavita and Gunja alias Bablu — left behind abusive husbands and "married" at a temple after meeting on Instagram. In 2018, two women from Hamirpur who had once been in love reunited after years of separation forced by arranged marriages. They divorced their respective husbands and formalised their relationship, though without legal validation.
