Jacob Elordi & Lily-Rose Depp To Star In Cormac McCarthy Adaptation ‘Outer Dark' — Red Hot Project Bubbling At The Cannes Market

EXCLUSIVE: Here's a very cool project bubbling at this year's Cannes market. We can reveal that Jacob Elordi and Lily-Rose Depp, two of the industry's buzziest young names, are set to star in Outer Dark, a film based on iconic author Cormac McCarthy's (No Country For Old Men) dark 1968 novel. Outer Dark is set in Appalachia during the Great Depression and tells of a young woman who bears her brother's baby. The brother leaves the nameless infant in the woods to die, but tells his sister that the newborn died of natural causes and had to be buried. The sister discovers this lie and sets out to find the baby for herself. But as both brother and sister separately move through the countryside, three terrifying strangers are on their tails, wreaking death and destruction wherever they appear. Nemes wrote the screenplay with Clara Royer, while Mike Goodridge of London-based Good Chaos is producing alongside Nemes; executive producers are Ilene Feldman, Ori Eisen of Original Films and Nicolas Gonda. Good Chaos and Nemes have the book-to-screen rights. Goodridge, the Triangle Of Sadness co-producer who has Left-Handed Girl playing at this year's festival, is among the team on the ground in Cannes in early talks with potential partners for the project. It's not formally on sale here but there are likely to be plenty of suitors to finance or get behind it. We understand the actors really sparked to the material and both are coming off big successes. It's fitting stuff for both: Depp is coming off Oscar-nominated box office hit Nosferatu, another dark fairytale, while Euphoria and Priscilla star Elordi is coming off excellent notices for The Narrow Road To The Deep North and will next be seen as the creature in Guillermo Del Toro's Frankenstein, as Heathcliff in Emerald Fennell's Wuthering Heights and in Ridley Scott's Dog Stars, which is in production. Laszlo Nemes said: 'Since reading Outer Dark the first time, it has been my dream to make it into a film, and to find the appropriate cinematic language that would do justice to Cormac McCarthy's evocative and cosmological work. Joined by two magnetic actors, I now feel it's possible. The extraordinary source material is a profound inspiration to build a unique world that vibrates with life and death at the same time. An exciting road-movie, a terrible and beautiful journey into the labyrinth of the human soul – this is the ambition I have for Outer Dark.' Nemes recently completed his third film Orphan (also produced by Goodridge) which is scheduled to premiere at a festival later this year before its October 23 release in Hungary. He will next shoot Moulin, a French-language feature about WWII resistance fighter Jean Moulin which is being sold at the Cannes market by 193. Gilles Lellouche and Lars Eidinger are starring for producer Alain Goldman. Alongside Orphan, Goodridge is also in post-production on Edward Berger's next film, The Ballad Of A Small Player, starring Colin Farrell and Tilda Swinton. Cormac McCarthy's lauded novels adapted for the screen include Oscar winner No Country For Old Men and Viggo Mortensen starrer The Road. Elordi is repped by Gersh and Goodman, Genow. Depp is repped by CAA, Markham, Froggatt & Irwin, Agence Adequat, and Lichter, Grossman. Nemes is represented by CAA and Ilene Feldman Management. Mike Goodridge Joins Forces With Lawrence Osborne & Nicholas Simon On UK-Asia Production Outfit Java Road

EXCLUSIVE: UK author Lawrence Osborne is teaming up with producers Mike Goodridge of the UK's Good Chaos and Nicholas Simon of Bangkok-based Indochina Productions on a new production outfit, focused on adapting his works. Osborne wrote the 2014 novel The Ballad Of A Small Player, which has been adapted into a film directed by Edward Berger (his first feature since Conclave) and starring Colin Farrell. Good Chaos was lead producer on the film. 'It has long been my ambition to create a company which could develop my own work in the transition from page to screen,' said Osborne. 'Development, in fact, is always the hardest part in the creation of a movie – but also, perhaps, the most creatively interesting. Java Road is itself a creation arising from a collaboration between friends who share the same vision.' The team is in process of hiring a development and production executive. Osborne's other novels, set in locations including Bangkok, Los Angeles, the Greek islands and Cambodia, include The Glass Kingdom, Only To Sleep, Beautiful Animals and Hunters In The Dark. His first novel The Forgiven was adapted into a film by John Michael McDonagh in 2021 with a cast headed by Ralph Fiennes and Jessica Chastain. His short stories have appeared in magazines such as Tin House and Best American Short Stories; his latest collection of short stories Burning Angel was published in 2023. Macau-set romantic thriller The Ballad Of A Small Player will be released later this year by Netflix. Farrell plays a gambler who has run out of cash in the iconic Chinese enclave. The cast also includes Fala Chen, Deanie Ip, Alex Jennings and Tilda Swinton. Goodridge, who founded Good Chaos in London in 2020, is also in post-production on Laszlo Nemes' first film in seven years Orphan and Jalmari Helander's sequel to his 2022 action movie hit Sisu. He also teamed with Sean Baker to produce Left-Handed Girl which is premiering here in Cannes Critics Week. In 2024, he produced two films shortlisted for Best International Feature at the Oscars – Baltasar Kormakur's Touch and Sandhya Suri's Santosh. Good Chaos is also prepping films with Kornel Mundruczo, Anna Biller, Eliza Hittman, Ruben Ostlund and Jasmila Zbanic. Nicholas Simon, who founded Indochina Productions in 2010, has worked in Asia since the early 1990s when he began producing through Vietnam's first international media joint venture. Indochina is now one of Asia's leading production service companies working across more than a dozen territories on recent productions including The White Lotus for HBO, Monarch for Apple and The Sympathizer for HBO. Osborne will continue to be represented by UTA and The Elyse Cheney Agency. Haut Et Court & Good Chaos Team On ‘Paris-Hollywood' Film Rights

Paris-based Haut et Court and London-based Good Chaos have partnered to acquire the film rights to Paris-Hollywood, the debut novel from writer and critic Cécile Mury. The novel is the story of a French journalist and an English-speaking movie star. The two companies have said they plan to adapt the novel into a feature film, with the aim of 'blending the sensibilities of both Franco and Anglo rom-coms.' 'We are so excited to be building this movie with our dear friends at Haut et Court and make a classic European romcom.' Paris-Hollywood was one of the buzzier titles at this year's Frankfurt Book Fair, where it was picked up by publishers in six different territories. Caroline Benjo, Co-CEO of Haut et Court added: 'We are absolutely thrilled to have teamed up with Good Chaos to bring to the screen this delightful rom-com that plays so much on the genre, but with a 'je ne sais quoi et presque rien'. We jumped on the rights as soon as we read the book as its tone is absolutely unique and reminds us of the best of English rom-coms but set in France' Haut et Court are best known for titles such as Laurent Cantet's The Class (Palme d'Or, 2008), Yorgos Lanthimos' The Lobster (Jury Prize Cannes, 2015), and Fabrice Gobert's acclaimed TV series The Returned (International Emmy for Best TV Series, 2013).
