Elton John Earns A Milestone New No. 1 With His Friend
Elton John is back at No. 1 in the U.K., and this time, he's not alone. The music legend returns to the summit of the Official Albums chart this frame with a brand new release — and a new collaborator credited alongside him on the throne. His latest studio effort doesn't just launch in the top spot, it also helps him reach an important career milestone. Who Believes in Angels?, a collaborative project between John and Brandi Carlile, opens at No. 1 on the Official Albums chart. That roster tracks the most-consumed EPs and full-lengths in the U.K., and this time around, it's the two powerhouse talents who jointly claim the highest spot. The collection was introduced to fans with a handful of tunes, though it seems the chart-topping start is thanks largely to John's continued popularity in his home country and Carlile's growing base of support in the U.K., as now massive win has yet emerged from the set. With Who Believes in Angels?, John claims his tenth No. 1 title in the U.K. He first reached the top all the way back in 1973 with Don't Shoot Me I'm Only the Piano Player. That win kicked off a decades-spanning run that includes chart rulers like Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, Caribou, Sleeping with the Past, and Diamonds, which needed some time before eventually rising to the summit. In 2021, he returned to No. 1 with The Lockdown Sessions, his most recent brand new release before this one. He also hit the peak with The Very Best of Elton John, his collaborative remix album Good Morning to the Night with PNAU, and his Greatest Hits compilation. This new release gives Carlile her very first U.K. chart-topper. It's not just the main albums tally that Who Believes in Angels? dominates this time around. The set starts at No. 1 on a total of five U.K. rankings this frame. In addition to leading the Official Albums chart, the release also rules the Official Album Sales, Official Album Downloads, Official Physical Albums, and Official Vinyl Albums rosters. While Who Believes in Angels? commands the spotlight, it's not the only John project that's present on the U.K. music rankings this week. His perennial favorite Diamonds is also showing that it's still a favorite on several charts. The compilation, which features many of his most iconic cuts, continues as a staple in the U.K., especially when it comes to platforms like Spotify and Apple Music. This frame, Diamonds lifts to No. 14 on the Official Albums chart. At the same time, it climbs to No. 8 on the Official Albums Streaming tally. The project also manages a comeback on the Official Album Downloads list, re-entering at No. 83. The set has previously reached No. 1 on all of these tallies, and it remains one of John's most commercially reliable titles.

Sir Elton John scores 10th number one album with Brandi Carlile collaboration
Sir Elton John has scored his 10th number one with the album Who Believes In Angels? – drawing him level with Kylie Minogue and Michael Jackson's number of chart-topping records. The veteran musician, 78, earned his latest number one thanks to his collaboration with 43-year-old US songwriter Brandi Carlile. Sir Elton told the Official Charts Company: 'Working with Brandi, (my songwriting partner) Bernie (Taupin) and (producer) Andrew (Watt) on this album was one of the greatest musical experiences of my life. 'It was initially challenging, but working through that process allowed us to emerge with something truly joyous and celebratory. 'We've been blown away by the response and love we've felt, and to see Who Believes In Angels? reach number one is a true joy. We couldn't be prouder of it.' The Rocket Man singer last topped the UK albums chart in January with Diamonds, a greatest hits compilation. Sir Elton also joins an impressive group of artists, including Ed Sheeran, David Bowie, Taylor Swift and Ariana Grande, who in the past 35 years have had two number one albums within a six-month period. His other chart-topping albums are Don't Shoot Me I'm The Only Piano Player, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, Caribou, Elton John's Greatest Hits, Sleeping With The Past, The Very Best Of Elton John, Good Morning To The Night, and The Lockdown Sessions. Sir Elton also matches Abba, Queen and Coldplay, who have 10 chart-toppers each. The Beatles and Robbie Williams currently hold the joint crown for the most for any act, with 15 number ones apiece. This is the first UK number one for Carlile, who is known for songs including The Story and Damage Gets Done, with Hozier. Carlile said it is a 'dream come true for me because I got to make this album with my absolute hero and dear friend Elton John'. She added: 'I want to say a huge thank-you to all the fans in the UK for your support, and obviously to Elton for believing in me and championing me in such a generous way. 'Thank-you to our wonderful collaborators – my inspiration Bernie Taupin and the brilliant Andrew Watt. 'I can't wait to see you all this summer on tour.' Carlile will tour the UK from June, stopping at the Royal Albert Hall in London, the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall, and Glastonbury among other places. She recently performed on American comedy show Saturday Night Live along with a one-off London performance with Sir Elton, who previously announced he would give up touring after his 2023 shows. Hits from Céline Dion, Miles Davis and Mary J. Blige enter U.S. National Recording Registry
Albums from Elton John, Miles Davis, Tracy Chapman, Mary J. Blige and the cast of Hamilton are entering America's audio canon, along with singles from Helen Reddy and Céline Dion and the music of Minecraft. New inductees into the National Recording Registry at the Library of Congress include Davis' groundbreaking 1970 merger of jazz and rock Bitches Brew, John's loaded-with-hits Goodbye Yellow Brick Road from 1973, Chapman's self-titled 1988 album that included Fast Car, Blige's deeply introspective 1994 My Life, and the 2015 original Broadway cast album of Hamilton. They were among the 25 recordings entering the archive in the class of 2025, Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden announced Wednesday. The recordings were chosen for their "cultural, historical or aesthetic importance in the nation's recorded sound heritage." "These are the sounds of America — our wide-ranging history and culture," Hayden said in a statement. "The National Recording Registry is our evolving nation's playlist." Helen Reddy's 1972 I Am Woman, Hear Me Roar and Céline Dion's 1997 hit My Heart Will Go On from the film Titanic are among the singles entering the archive. The Breakdown | Céline Dion tells her story 10 months ago Duration 20:39 Superstar Céline Dion talks to The National's Adrienne Arsenault in a Canadian English language exclusive about her years-long battle with stiff person syndrome, how it's changed her life and her determination to return to performing. Among the more unusual inclusions are the original music for the video game (and now monster hit movie) Minecraft from German producer Daniel Rosenfeld, as collected on the 2011 album, Minecraft: Volume Alpha, and the reboot sound for Microsoft's Windows 95 operating system, created by Rock & Roll Hall of Fame musician and producer Brian Eno. Announcer Chuck Thompson's radio broadcast of the 1960 World Series between the New York Yankees and Pittsburgh Pirates — clinched with a Game 7 home run by the Pirates' Bill Mazeroski — is also entering the registry. The oldest recording in the class of 2025 is 1913's Aloha 'Oe by the Hawaiian Quintette. The most recent is the 2015 Hamilton album, with music by Lin-Manuel Miranda. Other albums that won inclusion are 1968's Hello Dummy from insult comic Don Rickles, 1969's Chicago Transit Authority from the band Chicago, 1975's I've Got the Music in Me from Thelma Houston & Pressure Cooker, 1976's Fly Like an Eagle from the Steve Miller Band, and 2006's Back to Black from Amy Winehouse. Career-defining singles from other canonical artists are joining those of Reddy and Dion, including 1952's Happy Trails from Roy Rogers and Dale Evans, Freddy Fender's 1975 Before the Next Teardrop Falls, and 1971's Kiss an Angel Good Mornin' from trailblazing Black country artist Charley Pride.
