Why Eddie Murphy won't give 'Pickup' co-star Pete Davidson parenting advice

Here's a novel idea: Create the mother of all mismatches by putting Eddie Murphy in a chase caper with a hapless co-star, and watch the hilarious sparks fly. That was the recipe for Murphy's 1982 breakout "48 Hrs.," the action comedy co-starring Nick Nolte, and then his blockbuster movie series "Beverly Hills Cop." And here we are again with "The Pickup" (streaming Aug. 6 on Prime Video), which pairs Murphy with that delightfully human Goofy, Pete Davidson. For Murphy, 64, there's an unmistakable pride that comes with launching a unique movie genre. "The first real action comedy of this kind was '48 Hrs.' because before that, remember it was all Clint Eastwood saying, 'Go ahead, make my day,' and Charles Bronson in 'Death Wish,' all these hard-nosed cops, " says Murphy, casual on a video call in a sleeveless T-shirt. "After our movie, it seemed suddenly every tough guy had the one-liners: (Arnold Schwarzenegger's) 'Hasta la vista' or (Bruce Willis') 'Yippee ki-yay.' So, yeah, I kind of pioneered the genre." Join our Watch Party! Sign up to receive USA TODAY's movie and TV recommendations right in your inbox In "The Pickup," Murphy plays Russell Pierce, an armored truck driver who just wants to make it through another shift to meet his wife Natalie for their anniversary dinner. But he's paired with Travis (Davidson), whose cheery demeanor increasingly rankles until their truck is hijacked and the two have to bond to survive. The movie co-stars Keke Palmer and Eva Longoria. While Nolte was Murphy's foil in "48 Hrs.," and Judge Reinhold played that role in "Beverly Hills Cop," Davidson is next up in that position, and Murphy couldn't be more pleased. "Pete is 6-foot-3 and white, and I'm 5-foot-10 and Black, and he's in his mid-20s and I'm in my 60s," he says, guessing low on Davidson's actual age (31). "There's all this generational stuff, there's comedy in that." Eddie Murphy in a remake of 'Dirty Rotten Scoundrels'? He says there's been talk Murphy says he "became aware" of Davidson by watching him on "Saturday Night Live," and met him not long before "The Pickup" came together. As for choosing his projects, the star says he never stresses. "I've never looked for anything," he says. "Some of my movies have been my ideas, or stuff just comes in. I've never had any goals; I've just been going with the flow for 43 years. But, yeah, for the most part I get comedies and action comedies, very rarely straight up dramatic films." Murphy says talks are already underway for a sequel to "The Pickup," and there's even some buzz about pairing him with Davidson for a remake of the 1988 Frank Oz comedy classic "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels," which starred Steve Martin and Michael Caine. It's easy to picture Murphy inhabiting either hilarious role, with Davidson as his sidekick. "I love Pete, he's an interesting mix, talented and funny," Murphy says. "We had great chemistry. We have a lot in common. We both started as stand-up comics really young, we both were on 'Saturday Night Live' very young, we both lost our dads really young, and we both have a connection with women that comedians usually don't have." Murphy has been married to his second wife. Australian model Paige Butcher since 2024, and the couple has two kids (Murphy has a brood of 10 kids total with various moms). Davidson has dated several high-profile women, including Ariana Grande, Kaia Gerber and Kim Kardashian, and is an expectant father with model girlfriend Elsie Hewitt. "I congratulated Pete (on fatherhood), I told him he's going to be great because when you lose your dad really young, you go overboard yourself because you want them to have things you never had," says Murphy, whose father Charles was killed when Murphy was 8. Davidson's father Scott was one of the many first responders who died on Sept. 11, 2001, a trauma that Davidson revisited in the 2020 film "The King of Staten Island." Did Murphy have any parental advice for Davidson? "You can't give people advice on how to raise a kid," he says. "It's all an individual thing, but nature has wired you to do that. All kids are different, of course, and you can't raise them all the same. But I feel like you have to put more effort into actually being a bad parent, because being a good parent comes naturally."

The 3 Disney World Tips I Wish All Parents Knew

My daughter has been absolutely begging to go to Disney World ever since she found out about this magical land with roller coasters, real-life princesses, and Doc McStuffins. So my husband and I decided to plan a trip for her fourth birthday present. We told her on her birthday in February that we'd be going for her spring break in March — she told every person she met about the trip for those five weeks in between ('On the fourth day, I'm having breakfast with Goofy!'). The only hitch in our plan is that we were also traveling with our nine-month-old son. I was excited to take the trip, but also really nervous about balancing both of their needs — I feel like I'm still learning how to do this on a normal, low-key weekend at home, let alone in the midst of her dream come true. The stakes felt high. In the end, it was a magical trip for all of us. Disney World is an easy place to have two kids — in some ways it was even simpler than at home because every single environmental detail is planned with kids of all ages in mind. My husband and I pushed the two of them in our rented double stroller more than 50 miles over the course of the six-day trip (I do recommend a 'rest day' with no park plans in the middle if you can swing it). But here are three things we figured out along the way that made the trip with a preschooler and a baby feel more doable. 1. Rider Switch will be your new best friend. My 4-year-old is a ride fanatic (truly, she came home from Disney saying she wants to be a 'roller coaster engineer' when she grows up). I knew she'd want to ride every ride she was tall enough to ride and she'd want both of her parents to experience the joy with her. (I still remember her devastation when she found out I couldn't ride a roller coaster at a different park while I was pregnant the year before.) I was prepared to talk her through the disappointment, but then we found out there's a little extra Disney magic: Rider Switch. If you are traveling with a baby or toddler who isn't tall enough for a given attraction, you can sign up for Rider Switch at the ride entrance. Rider switch meant each of the grown ups could take turns riding while the other stayed with the baby. But here's the kicker — not only did my husband and I each get to ride separately without waiting in line twice, but she got to go with each of us. So this meant she could ride every ride twice without any extra time in lines. Now having a baby brother was a serious upgrade, not a hindrance. Rider Switch is available on a handful of attractions in each park — we used it for The Barnstormer, Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, and the Slinky Dog Dash, among others (check out the full list and instructions here). While the first parent rode each ride with her, the other was able to take our baby for a walk, feed him, or step inside somewhere for a little AC. Then we swapped places. The only downside? I'm absolutely terrified of big drops, and this meant I no longer had an excuse to sit them out. But I'll never forget the pep talk my daughter gave me walking into Tiana's Bayou Adventure: 'Here's a squeeze for good luck. You'll get through this.' Worth it. 2. Get the family photo package (but prepay!). My husband did a lot of the planning for the trip, and when he asked me if we should pre-pay $185 for Disney's Memory Maker, a package where you get all of the Disney Photo Pass photos, I said I didn't think we needed it. My daughter is notoriously difficult at smiling for the camera — I thought I'd be more likely to catch her at exactly the right moment than a stranger. But when we got to the parks, I realized they have photographers set up all over the place, not just at the character meet-and-greets and on the rides. That meant we had many chances to try to get a photo where all four of us are smiling and looking at the camera, and it felt low-pressure to try any time we were walking by a good location while everyone was awake and relatively happy. We ended up getting a great family photo in front of Cinderella's castle that I really treasure. A photographer also captured an absolutely iconic photo of my daughter running toward her hero, Doc McStuffins at Hollywood Studios. And, of course, I'm happy to have the photo of my absolute terror on that big drop from Tiana's Bayou Adventure (even if I would never post it anywhere). Paying for the photo package after the trip started was a little more expensive, and in hindsight I wish we had prepaid. 3. A Lightening Lane Multi-Pass is totally worth it. Listen, a Disney World trip is really expensive. We saved and planned for it for close to a year, and I still had sticker shock a few times. But the best money spent was anything we did to minimize time in lines. My four-year-old isn't the most patient (surprise, surprise) and the truth is that neither am I. Plus, it was really difficult to have my active nine-month-old stuck in the carrier for long times in the beating sun. We paid to upgrade one of our days in Magic Kingdom to a Lightning Lane Multi-Pass, which lets you book three attractions at a time where you can skip the line. Once you ride one of the rides, you can book another, pending availability — and you can book every ride in the park once. We rode every single ride our daughter was tall enough for that day (and you can combine Lightning Pass and Rider Switch!). It was unbelievably fun, though I did feel like I had my nose in my phone a lot that day trying to maximize the next booking instead of being truly present. But once I got the rhythm down (as soon as you scan into the ride, it releases your spot for the next one — so I'd book that before we even took off). We also booked a few princess and character breakfasts (cheaper than dinner!). While they were spendier, it was a shortcut to meeting her favorites without waiting in long lines. And it felt like a lower pressure environment for meeting them, which suits her personality. I did have to remind her to stop eating and chewing to say hello! All that walking really works up an appetite. Disney sets date for Magic Kingdom's nighttime parade

ORLANDO, Fla. - Walt Disney World has revealed the date that its new nighttime parade will debut at Magic Kingdom. Theme park visitors will be able to watch "Disney Starlight: Dream the Night Away" come down Main Street USA as of July 20. "We can't wait to bring this parade to life at the park," David Duffy, vice president of Disney Live Entertainment, told members of the media Tuesday night. Disney also revealed another float design for "Starlight," and it will bring up the rear of the parade. That unit features a locomotive engineered by Goofy, followed by Pluto, Donald Duck, Daisy Duck, Snow White, Dopey, Rapunzel, Flynn Rider, Aladdin and Jasmine. Bringing up the rear of the rear: Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse, who will sport a new set of starry costumes for the occasion. The train's look is inspired by the classic Main Street Electrical Parade, which was last seen at Disney World in 2016. On Wednesday, Disney World revealed a change in park reservations for Magic Kingdom for its annual passholders, starting with the parade's debut date. On July 20 and thereafter, passholders will need a Magic Kingdom reservation at any part of the day, as opposed to the current policy of going reservation-free after 2 p.m. Disney's website says the change is because of an "anticipated high demand" and it will remain in effect for a limited time, though no end date was provided. The change does not pertain to Epcot, Disney's Hollywood Studios or Disney's Animal Kingdom. A step-off time for "Starlight" has not been posted, and the "Festival of Fantasy Parade" remains on Magic Kingdom's daytime schedule. Disney also announced the order of units that were previously announced. The parade will begin with the Blue Fairy and "Peter Pan" characters, followed by floats tied to "Wish," "Encanto" and "Frozen," then assorted Disney royals together plus "Coco" and "Moana" floats and, finally, Goofy's train unit. "What guests are going to be able to get in this parade is a nod to the past but also eyes firmly set on the future," Tara Anderson, show director, said in a video released by Disney. "You're going to hear melodies from older films, newer films, in a very magical, mystical way." Original theme music has been composed for "Starlight." The new parade was announced in August, alongside plans for a new villains land and "Cars" attractions in Magic Kingdom along with a "Monsters, Inc" land at Disney's Hollywood Studios. Debuting this week at Hollywood Studios were two stage shows: "Disney Villains: Unfairly Ever After" and "The Little Mermaid - a Musical Adventure." Additional Walt Disney World attractions expected to open this year are GEO-82, an adults-only lounge built inside Epcot's Spaceship Earth and set to open in June; an updated Test Track ride at Epcot; and a "Zootopia" film inside the Tree of Life at Disney's Animal Kingdom. _____________ Copyright (C) 2025, Tribune Content Agency, LLC. Fresh Beats, Family Fun and Summer Vibes Take Over Walt Disney World Resort

This summer, Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando is turning up the fun with the debut of Cool Kid Summer, an enchanting celebration filled with pop-up entertainment, interactive activities and family-friendly surprises across its theme parks, water parks and hotels. Now through September 1, guests can catch added character experiences, dynamic games, lively dance parties, two new stage shows, a nighttime parade premiering in July and more. Our family visited during opening week of Cool Kid Summer, and I can confirm that it's the can't-miss event of the season. Here's what to expect - and how to join the party. At Disney's Magic Kingdom, my children (ages 5, 5 and 8) danced with Pluto and played midway-style games at Big Top Bash at Storybook Circus, then headed to Tomorrowland for Galactic Blast, a space-themed DJ dance party with Stitch. At Hollywood Studios, we caught two new stage shows, followed by the interactive "Get Animated at Animation Courtyard," featuring jump rope performers, magicians, games, crafts and an indoor DJ dance party with Mickey Mouse and Disney Junior friends. At EPCOT, we spent a fun-filled morning at the all-new dance-and-play experience GoofyCore. And at Animal Kingdom, the kids earned limited-time Wilderness Explorers badges and participated in a singalong at Discovery Island. SheBuysTravel tip: For even more fun, stay at Disney's Pop Century Resort, Disney's Art of Animation Resort, Disney's Caribbean Beach Resort or Disney's Wilderness Lodge - all of which are offering character visits, family games, music and more as part of the event. One of our family's favorite Cool Kid Summer spots is the brand-new GoofyCore activation at EPCOT, where CommuniCore Hall has been transformed into an immersive indoor play experience featuring a DJ dance party and games with Goofy and his friends. The memories created here are priceless; this is an event where Goofy made time to dance, play games and build forts with my kids. The two new stage shows at Hollywood Studios are also terrific: "The Little Mermaid – A Musical Adventure" and "Disney Villains: Unfairly Ever After" are colorful, high-energy and perfect for all ages. SheBuysTravel tip: Make sure to pick up a Cool Kid Summer guide for each of the parks, as well as a limited-edition Magic Shot photo guide with a map to all the best spots for fun family photos. An interactive map can also be found in the My Disney Experience app. One major addition to Walt Disney World 's programming will be the dazzling nighttime parade "Disney Starlight: Dream the Night Away," set to premiere July 20 at Disney's Magic Kingdom. The first evening parade at the park since 2016, the parade will feature a majestic musical score, a procession of glittering floats and beloved Disney characters. Inspired by the classic Main Street Electrical Parade, guests will be treated to enchanting moments from Disney and Pixar animated films such as Moana, Encanto, Frozen and Peter Pan. Mickey and Minnie Mouse will debut sparkling costumes for the parade, with new themed treats and commemorative merchandise available for purchase. Some of the most memorable moments during Cool Kid Summer are the unexpected ones - the impromptu dance parties, surprise character pop-ins and themed sequences that appear out of nowhere. On our visit, a spontaneous banshee parade through Pandora at Animal Kingdom had our kids clapping and cheering alongside cast members, while at Magic Kingdom, we stumbled upon Rapunzel and Flynn Rider dancing in the streets. SheBuysTravel tip: Leave room in your days at the theme parks (and even resorts) to linger and explore. Disney has packed this seasonal event with moments meant to surprise and delight. Planning a visit? There are several new ways to stretch your vacation budget during Cool Kid Summer: 50% Off Kids Tickets: Save on multi-day kids' park tickets (ages 3–9) for visits through September Three-Park Ticket: Visit EPCOT, Hollywood Studios, and Animal Kingdom for as low as $89 per day (through Sept. 22).Disney Resort Hotel Deals: Save up to 30 percent on select resort stays from August 1 – October 11, with additional offers for Annual Passholders and Florida Subscriber Rates: Exclusive discounts for Disney+ subscribers, with hotel rates starting at $99 per night at select Resident Summer Magic Ticket: Four-day park ticket for just $60 per day (through Sept. 27).Free Water Park Admission: Complimentary water park entry on check-in day for Disney Resort hotel guests through Sept. 7.
