Google Beam, AI Mode, And More: 7 Highlights From Google I/O 2025

As the company's flagship developer conference, Google I/O always has plenty to show each year, and 2025 is no exception. Like clockwork, a slew of announcements were made during the keynote held on 20 May, with artificial intelligence (AI) taking centrestage. The technological advancements span Google's entire portfolio, including Search and Gemini, as well as external parties and collaborators like Android. For easier reference, here's a lowdown of the biggest news from Google I/O 2025 across productivity, content creation, and everything in between. Formerly known as Project Starline, Google Beam is touted as the tech giant's 'AI-first 3D video communication platform' that transforms standard 2D video streams into realistic 3D experiences. It runs on a combination of software and hardware, such as a six-camera array positioned at different angles, to create a sense of depth and dimensionality, delivering 60fps streaming and millimetre-level head tracking. Beam will also offer near-real time speech translations when used with Google Meet, while preserving the voice, tone, and expression of the original speaker. Google is working with Zoom and HP to bring the feature to enterprises, and the first devices are set to launch for select customers later this year. Powered by a large language audio model from Google DeepMind, speech translation in Meet translates spoken words into the preferred language of the user's conversation partner, with the dubbed version overlaid on top. It will first be available in English and Spanish, followed by Italian, German, and Portuguese in the coming weeks, and is now live in beta for users who subscribe to Google's AI Pro plan or the newly-announced AI Ultra subscription. AI Mode leverages Google's proprietary query fan-out technique to bring more advanced reasoning and multimodality, and the ability to go deeper through follow-up questions and helpful web links. Where Deep Search can create a fully-cited report in a few minutes by gathering hundreds of results and reasoning across scattered pieces of information, new agentic capabilities help users with tasks like purchasing tickets or making restaurant reservations. The most interesting addition to the list is Shop on AI Mode, representing the colliding worlds of e-commerce and statistics. Alongside over 50 million product listings, it introduces virtual try-on technology that allows shoppers preview outfits on themselves just by uploading a photo – the first of its kind working at this scale. AI Mode is only available in the U.S. for now, with more countries coming soon. Also part of the AI Mode suite of features, Gemini Live boasts camera and screen-sharing capabilities such that users can stream video from their smartphone's camera or screen to the AI Model and hold near-real time verbal conversations with it. Simply tap the 'Live' icon in AI Mode or in Lens, point the camera, and enquire about the subject for an explanation of tricky concepts, suggestions, and links to different resources including websites, videos, forums, and more. Gemini Live will be integrated more deeply with other Google apps in the coming weeks, bringing day-to-day convenience like offering directions from Google Maps, creating events in Calendar, and create to-do lists with Tasks. A new video tool tailored for filmmaking, Flow is powered by Google's trio of advanced generative AI models: Veo for video production, Imagen for image generation, and Gemini for text prompts. It lets users import characters or scenes and create those artefacts within the platform, granting access to key features that include camera control, a scene builder for editing or extending existing shots, asset management, and Flow TV – a showcase of clips, channels, and content generated with Veo. Several upgrades are also coming to the other new models. Veo 3, for instance, can generate videos with audio for the first time, while Imagen 4 creates images in various aspect ratios and up to 2K resolution. Additionally, Google is set to launch SynthID detector, a verification portal that identifies AI-generated content. Android XR is the first Android platform built in the Gemini era, designed to power an ecosystem of headsets, glasses, and more. Equipped with a camera, microphones, and speakers, smart glasses running on it work alongside smartphones to display turn-by-turn directions, take photos, message friends, do live language translations, and more without users needing to reach into their pockets. Gentle Monster and Warby Parker will be the first two eyewear brands to bring it to life, and more collaboration efforts are expected in due time. Running on the Gemini 2.5 Pro model, Stitch turns rough user interface (UI) designs into app-ready ones, giving developers a better idea of how their conceputalisations will take shape. It works with wireframes, initial sketches, and screenshots of other UI templates, and touts the ability to turn text prompts and reference images into 'complex UI designs and frontend code in minutes'. The Stitch experiment is now available in Labs. Si Jia is a casual geek at heart – or as casual as someone with Sephiroth's theme on her Spotify playlist can get. The best use for AI: You can now turn yourself into an Android Bot by uploading a photo

Edgar Cervantes / Android Authority TL;DR Google has announced a new Androidify app, allowing you to build your own Android Bot. This app lets you build an Android Bot by uploading a photo of yourself. You'll need to compile the app yourself if you'd like to try it out. Google has allowed users to create their own Android Bot over the years. Now, it's used Google I/O 2025 to announce the new Androidify app, which could make building your own Android Bot a breeze. Androidify is an open-source project that uses the Gemini API and other development technologies to let you create an Android Bot from a photo. A demonstration posted by Google reveals that you simply need to upload a photo of yourself and choose your desired color, and the app will generate your Bot in a few seconds. From here, you can either download or share the Bot. Check out Google's clip below. The app uses the firm's Material 3 Expressive design for icon/button shapes, buttons with a gradient color scheme, and 'delightful' transition animations. Google adds that this app should run well on conventional phones, tablets, and foldable phones. This isn't the first time Google has given users a way to build their own Android Bot, though. The company previously offered the old Androidify app until 2020. It subsequently allowed people to create Bots via a website using a small number of parts. Google says the new Androidify app uses a standard Imagen image generator model. However, the company adds that it's working on a fine-tuned model that's 'trained specifically on all of the pieces that make the Android bot cute and fun.' This customized model will be launched later this summer. One downside to this new version of Androidify is that you'll need to compile the app yourself if you'd like to use it. That means most people are out of luck if they want to try it. But this is still a fun way to use AI and a refreshing change from AI announcements involving chatbots, writing assistance, and summarization. In any event, it would be great if Google eventually released the app on the Play Store. Got a tip? Talk to us! Email our staff at Email our staff at news@ . Wear OS 6 Developer Preview lets you try out Google's new Material 3 Expressive UI

Google TL;DR Google has released the first Wear OS 6 Developer Preview, allowing developers to test apps with its new theming system and UI changes. This update, based on Android 16, introduces a Material 3 Expressive design with dynamic coloring from the watch face, plus new animations and smoother scrolling. Wear OS 6 also promises up to 10% battery life improvement, space-efficient tiles, larger buttons, and provides updated developer tools. Earlier this month, Google unveiled Wear OS 6, the latest version of its smartwatch platform. The company revealed its launch date and shared a sneak peek at its new design, but it didn't release any preview builds for us to try out on our own. Today at its Google I/O 2025 developer conference, the company released its first Wear OS 6 Developer Preview, giving developers a chance to test how their watch apps will look and behave under Wear OS' new theming system. Wear OS 6 is based on Google's latest Android 16 release, and unlike past Wear OS releases, it brings a fresh coat of paint. Wear OS 6 is getting a UI overhaul based on Google's latest Material 3 Expressive design. The update will bring new animations, smoother transitions and scrolling, and most notably, a dynamic color theming system that's based on your current watch face. Furthermore, Wear OS 6 also brings more space-efficient tiles thanks to a new 3-slot tile layout, larger and easier to tap buttons, UI elements that are more optimized for round displays, and improvements to the ambient display transition for watch faces. Apart from UI changes, the Wear OS 6 update will also improve battery life, with Google stating that watches updating from Wear OS 5 to Wear OS 6 will see an up to 10% improvement in battery life. It also brings the improvements introduced with the Wear OS 5.1 update, such as Credential Manager support and richer media controls. Ahead of Wear OS 6's launch date later this year, Google is releasing the first Developer Preview. Developers who want to test how their apps and tiles behave on the new version can download the Wear OS 6 emulator preview in Android Studio. They can also take a look at Google's design guidance for Wear OS, its Figma design kits, and the latest Wear Compose Material 3 and ProtoLayout Material 3 libraries. These libraries enable support for Wear OS 6's new dynamic color theming system as well as make tiles align with the system font by default. Got a tip? Talk to us!
