Google Beam, AI Mode, And More: 7 Highlights From Google I/O 2025
The technological advancements span Google's entire portfolio, including Search and Gemini, as well as external parties and collaborators like Android. For easier reference, here's a lowdown of the biggest news from Google I/O 2025 across productivity, content creation, and everything in between.
Formerly known as Project Starline, Google Beam is touted as the tech giant's 'AI-first 3D video communication platform' that transforms standard 2D video streams into realistic 3D experiences. It runs on a combination of software and hardware, such as a six-camera array positioned at different angles, to create a sense of depth and dimensionality, delivering 60fps streaming and millimetre-level head tracking.
Beam will also offer near-real time speech translations when used with Google Meet, while preserving the voice, tone, and expression of the original speaker. Google is working with Zoom and HP to bring the feature to enterprises, and the first devices are set to launch for select customers later this year.
Powered by a large language audio model from Google DeepMind, speech translation in Meet translates spoken words into the preferred language of the user's conversation partner, with the dubbed version overlaid on top. It will first be available in English and Spanish, followed by Italian, German, and Portuguese in the coming weeks, and is now live in beta for users who subscribe to Google's AI Pro plan or the newly-announced AI Ultra subscription.
AI Mode leverages Google's proprietary query fan-out technique to bring more advanced reasoning and multimodality, and the ability to go deeper through follow-up questions and helpful web links. Where Deep Search can create a fully-cited report in a few minutes by gathering hundreds of results and reasoning across scattered pieces of information, new agentic capabilities help users with tasks like purchasing tickets or making restaurant reservations.
The most interesting addition to the list is Shop on AI Mode, representing the colliding worlds of e-commerce and statistics. Alongside over 50 million product listings, it introduces virtual try-on technology that allows shoppers preview outfits on themselves just by uploading a photo – the first of its kind working at this scale.
AI Mode is only available in the U.S. for now, with more countries coming soon.
Also part of the AI Mode suite of features, Gemini Live boasts camera and screen-sharing capabilities such that users can stream video from their smartphone's camera or screen to the AI Model and hold near-real time verbal conversations with it. Simply tap the 'Live' icon in AI Mode or in Lens, point the camera, and enquire about the subject for an explanation of tricky concepts, suggestions, and links to different resources including websites, videos, forums, and more.
Gemini Live will be integrated more deeply with other Google apps in the coming weeks, bringing day-to-day convenience like offering directions from Google Maps, creating events in Calendar, and create to-do lists with Tasks.
A new video tool tailored for filmmaking, Flow is powered by Google's trio of advanced generative AI models: Veo for video production, Imagen for image generation, and Gemini for text prompts. It lets users import characters or scenes and create those artefacts within the platform, granting access to key features that include camera control, a scene builder for editing or extending existing shots, asset management, and Flow TV – a showcase of clips, channels, and content generated with Veo.
Several upgrades are also coming to the other new models. Veo 3, for instance, can generate videos with audio for the first time, while Imagen 4 creates images in various aspect ratios and up to 2K resolution. Additionally, Google is set to launch SynthID detector, a verification portal that identifies AI-generated content.
Android XR is the first Android platform built in the Gemini era, designed to power an ecosystem of headsets, glasses, and more. Equipped with a camera, microphones, and speakers, smart glasses running on it work alongside smartphones to display turn-by-turn directions, take photos, message friends, do live language translations, and more without users needing to reach into their pockets. Gentle Monster and Warby Parker will be the first two eyewear brands to bring it to life, and more collaboration efforts are expected in due time.
Running on the Gemini 2.5 Pro model, Stitch turns rough user interface (UI) designs into app-ready ones, giving developers a better idea of how their conceputalisations will take shape. It works with wireframes, initial sketches, and screenshots of other UI templates, and touts the ability to turn text prompts and reference images into 'complex UI designs and frontend code in minutes'.
The Stitch experiment is now available in Labs.

Tencent Plays Coy About Copying Sony's Aloy
Tencent raised eyebrows late last year when it released the announcement trailer for Light of Motiram , an open-world survival game where humans use primitive technology to combat giant mechanical beasts. Sound familiar? Well, Sony certainly thought so, as the company is now suing the China-based studio over copyright and trademark infringement against its Horizon video game franchise. As reported by Variety, Sony Interactive Entertainment filed a lawsuit on 25 July in the United States District Court for the Northern District of California, alleging that Light of Motiram is a 'slavish clone' of the Horizon Zero Dawn and Horizon Forbidden West video games and requesting statutory damages of US$150,000 for each separate work in the Horizon franchise infringed. In addition, PlayStation is looking to prevent the game's release, stating that 'Tencent's copying of Horizon is so blatant that the public has described it as 'crazy,' 'insane,' and 'shameless.' Tencent also used its rip-off of the iconic Horizon main character, Aloy, as the centrepiece of its pre-release marketing and promotional strategy, deliberately causing numerous game lovers to confuse Light of Motiram as the next game in the Horizon series when encountering Tencent's promotional gameplay videos and social media accounts.' Horizon Zero Dawn (2017) According to further reports by The Wrap, Sony also stated that Tencent attempted to pitch its own version of Horizon in hopes of sealing a collaboration, and despite Sony rejecting the offer, Tencent moved forward with its plans anyway. Representatives for Tencent did not respond to either Variety or The Wrap's request for comments. From looking at the game's trailer alone, it's easy to see just how similar Light of Motiram is to Sony's popular adventure franchise, as apart from the obvious use of the same core man-versus-machine concepts, the upcoming game also features a post-apocalyptic setting, and a tribal protagonist that wields a bow alongside melee weapons to target specific parts of an enemies body, as well as the ability to ride mechanical horses, 'train' mechanical beasts, and use ariel gliders, making it seem far more than just mere inspiration. Light of Motiram To be fair, Tencent's title does feature unique mechanics that differentiate it from Sony's franchise, such as a focus on crafting structures like what appear to be energy pylons and turrets for base defence, hinting at a strong focus on base building and tower defence, alongside a bigger emphasis on multiplayer co-op gameplay. Still, the similarities between the two games are just too obvious for Sony to ignore, and only time will tell how the lawsuit plays out, and if there's trouble on Light of Motiram's horizon. 'Borderlands 4' Nets Nintendo Switch 2 Version A Month After Main Release
Gearbox Entertainment's upcoming looter-shooter sequel, Borderlands 4 , has now landed a Nintendo Switch 2 version, with the game headed to the hybrid console on 3 October 2025, just one month after its main release. Taking to X/Twitter, Gearbox head Randy Pitchford announced the game's Nintendo Switch 2 launch date in his signature casual style, reminiscent of his previous reveal of the title's early release. In the clip, he addressed fan concerns that the Switch 2 version would not arrive anytime soon due to the lack of pre-order announcements, and cheekily set up the notion that it would not release this year, only to drop the reveal of its October launch right at the end. The announcement of Borderlands 4's Switch 2 launch date within the year will certainly be great news for fans eager to take the mayhem with them on the go, especially considering Gearbox's previous statements that the version would arrive later than other platforms. This was in part due to the team's decision to make a dedicated Switch 2 version of the game over a simple port, with Pitchford explaining that the hybrid console was 'a joy to work with' and that it was 'pretty astonishing how perfect [the] platform is for Borderlands 4 .' With Borderlands 4's early launch date of 12 September 2025 on the PlayStation, Xbox and PC, things are already looking pretty promising for the upcoming shooter sequel, which looks set to ramp up the mayhem fans know and love, with Pitchford and Gearbox Global Creative Executive Officer Andrew Reiner explaining during a previous interview with Geek Culture how the team is bringing the series back to its roots while expanding on core concepts. Now, with an early-than-expected release date on the Nintendo Switch 2, the game will also attract a brand new legion of fans when Borderlands 4 drops on the hybrid console on 3 October 2025. Retro gamers are about to get a strikingly yellow blast from the past, as Atari and Bandai Namco have teamed up for the Atari 2600+ Pac-Man Edition, a special re-release of the 2023 classic console refresh that celebrates the 45th anniversary of the iconic yellow puck. Originally launched in 2023, the Atari 2600+ served as a modern-day recreation of the classic '70s gaming console, retaining its retro feel while incorporating current-generation technologies like HDMI and USB-C ports, alongside the ability to run both 2600 and 7800 cartridges. 'The Atari 2600+ Pac-Man Edition is more than just a console,' manufacturer Plaion wrote in the console's announcement, 'it's a tribute to the moment home gaming truly began. By reimagining the iconic hardware in Pac-Man's unmistakable style, we're celebrating the legacy of two cultural giants who helped define a generation of play.' The Atari 2600+ Pac-Man Edition will also come with a matching yellow CX-40 wireless joystick, although different colour variations will also be sold separately, each themed after the four ghosts, including Red (Blinky), Cyan (Inky), Orange (Clyde) and Pink (Pinky). The console will also come with a Pac-Man Double Feature cartridge, which comprises the very first home console release of the original 1980s game, Pac-Man 2600 , alongside a new arcade-style version of the classic Pac-Man 7800 . Pre-orders for the Atari 2600+ Pac-Man Edition will open on 23 July 2025, with the console releasing on 31 October 2025 priced at US$169.99. Individual wireless joysticks will cost US$39.99 each, alongside classic Bandai Namco games like Dig Dug 7800 or Galaga 7800 , each priced at US$34.99, with additional game and joystick console bundles also available.
