Android 16 will let you turn your phone into a PC on demand

Google is expected to unveil Android 16 and its features on May 13 at The Android Show: I/O Edition. Ahead of that, Android Authority recently discovered that the upcoming Android iteration will introduce a revamped UI with a customizable Quick Settings panel, redesigned Settings menu, and more. Now, another report from Android Authority suggests that Android 16 will also let you use your smartphone like a PC by pairing it with an external monitor. Found on the Google Pixel 8 Pro running the latest beta build of Android 16, the phone offers a desktop mode—similar to Samsung DeX—when connected to an external monitor, with a Chromebook-like user interface. This will enable users to transform their phone simply by pairing it with an external monitor to get some serious work done. However, this feature is likely to be limited to high-end smartphones equipped with powerful chips capable of driving an external monitor. The phone should also have a fast USB-C port to enable the experience. Android desktop mode is still under beta testing, and it is unclear whether Google will release this capability on day one of the Android 16 rollout or if the update will be added to eligible devices at a later date. It's also unclear whether this feature will remain limited to Google Pixel smartphones or if other Android smartphone makers will offer the same to their users. Nonetheless, Android 16 is shaping up to be a much bigger update than anticipated, offering a robust set of new features, an improved UI, and possibly AI-powered experiences. Google recently seeded the final beta of Android 16, indicating that the launch of the stable version is right around the corner. The Pixel range of smartphones will be the first in line to receive the latest Android experience, followed by devices from brands like OnePlus, Xiaomi, and others, which are already testing Android 16 on their latest flagships.

Pixel users raise concerns over charge limit following March update

If you noticed that your Google Pixel 9 is reaching full charge faster than you would like it to, you're not alone. Pixel users are reporting issues regarding changes to their phones' charging limit following the March update that dropped over the weekend. According to a report on Android Authority, Pixel owners complained about their phones charging to 100% faster than usual after the latest Android update despite setting the charging limit to 80%. Over on Reddit, some users mentioned that their phones charged up to 100% the first couple of times after the update went live, only to charge up to 80% again after turning off the limit and re-enabling it. U/asteria99 commented that those charging bursts are likely due to recalibration. 'This is likely by design. It will occasionally charge up to 100% to ensure the software's battery reading is calibrated to the battery's actual value,' they said. 'For this update, Google probably enforced this for the first charge. It should function normally after the first 100% charge.' A product expert on the Google support forums, confirmed that the recalibration process is a feature and not a bug in a comment to another Pixel user posting about the same issue. They wrote that in order for the phone to complete recalibration, it needs to stay connected to the charger until the shield icon appears over the battery symbol in the status bar, which will stay there for two hours after the phone is fully charged. Every charge after that will be limited to 80% again. However, the shield icon won't show up if you're using a wireless charger. If that's the case, the phone needs to be left on the wireless charging platform until the lightning bolt icon disappears. The charging limit issue isn't limited to the Google Pixel 9, as it also hit the Google Pixel 8 Pro and Google Pixel 9 Pro, among other Pixel phones that can upgrade to the latest software update. That same update brought AI-powered scam detection, satellite messaging upgrades, Pixel Mode personalization, and more.

Local man pleads in federal porn case

HIGH POINT — A High Point man who was arrested last year on child pornography and sexual assault of a girl has pleaded guilty in federal court to charges of production of child pornography and receipt of child pornography. Joseph D. Santora, 44, who previously lived on Gatehouse Road, pleaded guilty in the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of North Carolina in exchange for having the remaining four counts against him dismissed. Santora faces a sentence of between five and 20 years on the conviction of receipt of child pornography and between 15 and 30 years on the conviction of production of child pornography, according to the plea agreement. Santora was arrested April 26, 2024, by the High Point Police Department. High Point police got a search warrant for Santora's house and, while executing the warrant, arrested Santora in his car nearby, according to an affidavit from an FBI agent. At the house, police seized Santora's Google Pixel 8 Pro smartphone. In the search of his house, police seized a second Pixel smartphone. On the phones police found several videos of girls as young as 8 years old naked and touching themselves sexually, the affidavit said. The initial investigation involving Santora began a year ago this month with a report of a sexual assault of a girl. In February 2024 a girl told High Point police that she got to know a man online and ran away from her home in another state to meet him in High Point. During the investigation, detectives identified the man who lured the girl to High Point as Santora, and he was arrested April 26. Santora was charged with first-degree forcible rape, human trafficking and sexual servitude in the investigation involving the girl.
