Gumla: A regional commander of the People's Liberation Front of India (PLFI), carrying a reward of Rs 15 lakh, was neutralised near Changabari forest in Gumla on Tuesday night, police said. Martin Karkett, a native of Redwa village, used to lead the banned outfit after the arrest of its supremo, Dinesh Gope, by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) from Nepal in 2023. He was associated with Gope since the outfit was formed in 2003 as the Jharkhand Liberation Tigers (JLT). The organisation was renamed as PLFI, a splinter group of Maoist, in 2007 with Gope as its self-styled chief, police added. Gumla SP Haris Bin Zaman said, "Acting on inputs about the presence of Karkett and his squad in the area, multiple teams of district police, led by Basia SDPO Nazir Akhtar, were formed to cordone off the area. The extremists got trapped and opened fire on the police. Police retaliated, killing Kerketta. A 5.76 mm pistol was found near the body during the search operation. The main team was under the command of officer in-charge of the Kamdara police station, Shashi Prakash. The operation is under way in the area, SP Zaman added. Karkett had 72 cases against him in Gumla, Ranchi, Simdega, Khunti , Hazaribag, and Chatra districts. Of the total cases, 27 are criminal cases, including 17 under the CLA Act, the Arms Act, and explosives, in Gumla, 17 in Khunti, 11 in Ranchi. He unleashed terror especially during PLFI's heydays from 2004, first in Kamdara, Basia, Sisai,Gumla , Ghaghra and Raidih police station areas in Gumla. Later as the PLFI expanded its footprints across districts, his terror too increased, police added.

GUMLA: A top commander of the People's Liberation Front of India (PLFI), a banned splinter group of CPI Maoists, was killed in an exchange of fire near Changabari forest under Kamdara police station of Gumla late on Tuesday night, police said on Wednesday. He was identified as Martin Karketta and carried Rs 15 lakh on head. The gunfire, which dealt a severe blow to the outlawed organisation, took place around 9 pm, police added. The deceased commander, who was leading the banned ultra outfit after the arrest of its supremo, Dinesh Gope, by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) from Nepal in 2023, was identified hailed from Redwa village under the same police station. He was associated with Gope since the outfit came into being in 2003 as the Jharkhand Liberation Tigers (JLT). However, it was renamed as PLFI, a splinter group of CPI (Maoist), in 2007 with Gope as its self-styled chief. Gumla SP Haris Bin Zaman said, "We had very specific information about the presence of Kerketta with his squad. Following this, we constituted multiple teams of district police, cordoned off the area, and police teams headed from different sides to encircle the extremists. Seeing the police, they opened fire on the police, which was retaliated, killing Kerketta in the encounter. We recovered a pistol from him. The operation was being led by Basia SDPO Nazir Akhtar, while the main team of police was in command of OC Kamdara Shashi Prakash. One more team was being led by OC Basia Yudhishthir Kumar Prajapati." The SP added that Kerketta was leading the outfit after the arrest of Dinesh. "As the encounter progressed, four others who were in his squad retreated. The operation is continuing in the area," he added.

Jharkhand man held with 105kg ganja in Sambalpur

Sambalpur: A 37-year-old man from Jharkhand was arrested with 105kg of ganja during a joint operation by Excise Intelligence and Enforcement Bureau (northern division) in Sambalpur on Monday. The accused, Rakesh Kumar Gope, a resident of Dhanbad, was caught near a temple at Singhpali Dunguripada under Ainthapali police station limits. Acting on reliable information, officers intercepted a white SUV in the morning and seized five white jerry sacks from Gope, each containing 21kg of ganja. The contraband was verified and identified as cannabis through standard procedures. The bureau in a press release stated, "Gope was arrested under Section 20(b)(ii)(C) of the NDPS Act, 1985. He was produced before the district and sessions-cum-special judge, Sambalpur." They sought 15-day judicial custody of the accused, and the seized ganja was also produced in court.
