Gorsedh Kernow names 22 new bards including American from Minnesota

Gorsedh Kernow has named 22 new bards, including an American from Minnesota. Gorsedh Kernow, established in 1928, celebrates and promotes Cornwall's unique Celtic heritage with a ceremony to celebrate the works of those who have made a distinct difference to Cornish culture. The new bards will be recognised for their work in serving Cornwall, including Mr Downing. He has been recognised as a new bard after promoting Cornish identity in the United States. The new bards come from a wide range of backgrounds, including the arts, media, and community service. Others have excelled in Cornish language examinations, demonstrating their commitment to the preservation and promotion of the language. Among the honourees are individuals who have actively contributed to the promotion of Cornwall's heritage, both locally and internationally. The list of new initiates includes local figures such as Mark Camp from Looe, recognised for utilising his extensive knowledge of Cornish heritage and natural history to advance 'Kernow'. Julie Caplin Grey has also been honoured for her cultural leadership within Cornwall, enhancing community access to Cornish culture. In addition, the special ceremony will welcome bards from overseas, such as Mr Downing from Minnesota, USA, who has ardently promoted Cornish identity in America. His efforts are a testament to the diverse and far-reaching influence of Cornwall's unique culture, extending well beyond the boundaries of the United Kingdom. Another notable entrant is Alexandre Le Gall from Cantabria, Spain, who has been honoured for his proficiency in the Cornish language and his ongoing work promoting Kernow. The newly named bards will be officially welcomed into the College of Bards of Gorsedh Kernow in Marazion on September 6, 2025. This ceremony will be conducted by the Grand Bard of Cornwall, Jenefer Lowe (Gwythvosen). A press spokesperson for Gorsedh Kernow said: "We are delighted to welcome these new bards, people whose work reflects Cornwall's distinctive culture both traditional and modern, at home and in the diaspora."
