Newcastle preview: Allan Kehoe's trio to prove the real ‘Deel'
Trainer Allan Kehoe is hoping the Newcastle track's ability to handle rain and still be suitable to race comes to the fore. Kehoe has three horses engaged this weekend with two proven heavy track performers in Dreamdeel and One Kind while he is confident his third runner, The Rookie, will get through it as well. Six-year-old gelding Dreamdeel has been a model of consistency for the stable and returned this campaign in fine order with two good runs before a blip at Newcastle where he only beat one home behind Fiftyfivechevy. • PUNT LIKE A PRO: Become a Racenet iQ member and get expert tips – with fully transparent return on investment statistics – from Racenet's team of professional punters at our Pro Tips section. SUBSCRIBE NOW! He bounced back in the best possible way with a win over Ocean Diva at Gosford on April 25. 'Every campaign he turns up and does a good job,' said Kehoe. 'He might put in a couple of shockers when he's had enough but you put him away to refresh and he goes again. 'If you take away the Newcastle run the start before where he had a bit of bad luck and we probably gassed him from the wide gate, his other three runs this preparation have been right on the mark. 'The form out of the Gosford race has stood up with the fourth horse, Rotagilla, winning on the Kensington last week and we beat it by three lengths while Ocean Diva won at Hawkesbury the next day.' The son of Dundeel lines up in the Benchmark 68 Handicap (1850m) with apprentice Mitch Stapleford to ride him again. 'The way he acting around the stables, he is ready to bounce again,' Kehoe said. 'He has a win and two seconds from four starts at the track and distance. 'Mitch rode him very well the other day and will ride him again. 'His three kilo claim brings the horse right into this race.' One Kind is knocking on the door after third placings at each of her three runs this time in and Kehoe expects her to play a major role in the Benchmark 64 Handicap (900m). Following her first-up run behind Insist at Newcastle, she was beaten a neck by Dis Is Heaven at Tuncurry and a similar margin by Are Ee Que at Wyong after tough runs at her last two starts. 'She probably should have won her last two starts. She was just beaten on the line and has had no luck,' said Kehoe. 'At Tuncurry, she drew a wide gate and was no closer than five-deep the whole way and was beaten a neck. She was the only horse hitting the line. 'We walked away thinking she is flying this preparation. 'Then a Wyong, the same thing happened. The leader stacked them up and she travelled very wide again and was still only beaten on the line.' The daughter of Sebring Sun has drawn out in gate 12 but Kehoe isn't worried by the wide draw. 'Over the 900m at Newcastle, she is better off drawn wide,' he said. 'On a wet track, I'm certain everyone will want to come wide anyway. I think the gate is a plus for her.' Kehoe's other runner is The Rookie in the Midway 2YO Maiden Plate (900m). The daughter of Pierro won her Wyong trial on a heavy track in good fashion on April 24 before a fourth-up fourth to Yes Siree here on May 1. 'I probably got it wrong by running her at Wyong. I should have been going into this race first-up,' he said. 'On the positive side, it tightened her up and gave her a bit more race experience. 'I think we will see her really run through the line. I've got a big opinion of her.'

Cronulla ace learns fate after ugly act as Roosters make mockery of Origin backlash
A severely depleted Roosters side have made a mockery of calls to pause the NRL during the State of Origin period after thumping a full strength Cronulla 42-16 on Saturday night. The Sharks' heavy defeat was compounded by an ugly high shot from winger Ronaldo Mulitalo that saw the flyer sent to the bin. On Sunday, the NRL match review committee slapped Mulitalo with a one-game ban, with an early guilty plea. The incident was a sour note in what was an outstanding against-the-odds triumph for the Roosters, who were missing five players to Origin duty, along with several more injured stars. The Origin situation had already led to renewed calls for the NRL to implement a standalone period for the representative game, after the ladder-leading Bulldogs were thumped by the struggling Dolphins on Thursday night. Penrith were also missing five Origin stars and were thrashed by Newcastle in Saturday night's earlier game, to leave the four-time defending premiers rooted to the bottom of the ladder. But the Roosters flipped the script against premiership contenders Cronulla in Gosford, running in seven-tries-to-three to score an extraordinary 26-point victory. Roosters No.7 Hugo Savala showed that the club's interest in veteran Manly halfback Daly Cherry-Evans may be unnecessary as he delivered the most mature display of his nine-game first-grade career. Savala scored one try and contributing three try assists with his pin-point kicking a particular highlight in the big win. The Roosters led 14-0 in as many minutes, with left winger Daniel Tupou catching and grounding two superb Savala cross-field kicks. Both tries were converted by Savala's excellent halves partner Sandon Smith, who added a penalty and finished the night with seven goals from eight attempts. Savala's long-term future at the Tricolours has been subject to scrutiny this season, with his agent declaring he would explore loan options if Robinson lands the signature of Cherry-Evans. But on the evidence so far this season - and with first-choice No.7 Sam Walker still not due back from injury for a month - Savala and Smith have established themselves as bona fide NRL playmakers. "I've been really clear with my intentions, and I also don't think it's the right time to talk about that," Robinson said when asked about his club's move for Cherry-Evans. "On a night like tonight, to shift direction towards that, I don't think it's the right time - I think it's right to celebrate the team and the players." The match was overshadowed by a brutal high shot from Mulitalo on Roosters centre Mark Nawaqanitawase that saw the Sharks winger sent to the sin bin midway through the first half. Nawaqanitawase caught and passed in quick succession, with replays showing Mulitalo making forceful contact with his shoulder to the head of the Roosters star, in an incident some fans labelled a 'dog shot' and many thought should have been a straight send-off. Roosters prop Xavier Va'a made it an NRL debut to savour after crashing over for a try with just his second touch of the footy and while KL Iro and Mulitalo pulled tries back for the Sharks, Roosters skipper James Tedesco and Dom Young hit back to put the exclamation mark on a big win. Who needs DCE? Savala shines as Roosters stun Sharks
Hugo Savala has led a depleted Sydney Roosters side to a 42-16 win over Cronulla that will ignite questions over the NRL glamour club's pursuit of veteran halfback Daly Cherry-Evans. Savala stole the show at Industree Group Stadium in Gosford, the 23-year-old scoring a try, contributing three try assists and outgunning Sharks halfback Nicho Hynes on his home patch. Leading a Roosters side missing five State of Origin players and three NRL regulars through injury, No.7 Savala delivered the most mature display of his nine-game first-grade career on Saturday. Savala's long-term future at the Roosters has been subject to scrutiny this season, with his agent declaring he would explore loan options if Trent Robinson does what many expect him to do and lands the signature of Manly veteran Cherry-Evans. But on the evidence so far this season - and with Sam Walker still sidelined for a further month with an anterior cruciate ligament injury - Savala and Sandon Smith look to be bona fide NRL playmakers. Razzle dazzle from the Roosters! 🔥#NRLRoostersSharks — NRL (@NRL) May 24, 2025 The Roosters led 14-0 in as many minutes, with left winger Daniel Tupou catching and grounding two pin-point Savala kicks to the air. Both tries were converted by Smith, who added a penalty and finished the night with seven goals from eight attempts. Cronulla finally had some decent attack 15 minutes in, and on their first real foray forward the Sharks crashed over through Cameron McInnes. But the Roosters didn't go into their shell and instead combined for one of the plays of the season. Beginning in their own half, Savala started and finished it. He and Mark Nawaqanitawase combined to put Dom Young away down the right edge. The English winger burned KL Iro, then flicked a one-handed offload inside to James Tedesco, who tipped on to a supporting Savala to score. More woe was to come for the Sharks, with winger Ronaldo Mulitalo sin-binned for a shoulder-charge on Nawaqanitawase as the winger set the wheels in motion for Savala's try. The Sharks weathered the storm to trail 20-6 at halftime, but another Savala kick moved the Chooks out of reach. This time it was to the right wing, and while Young missed the ball, it fell kindly for former Wallabies winger Nawaqanitawase, who crashed over for his eighth try in nine NRL games. Debutant Roosters prop Xavier Va'a crashed in on just his second touch in the NRL, before Cronulla launched a late and short-lived fightback. Iro and Mulitalo crossed in the final 20 minutes, before Tedesco and Young wrapped up a deserved Roosters victory with late tries.
