Flags placed on service members' graves at Lake View Cemetery for Memorial Day
CLEVELAND (WJW) — Memorial Day weekend is here — a holiday many see as the unofficial start of summer. But the true meaning is to honor service members who paid the ultimate sacrifice for our freedoms. There are 9,000 service members laid to rest at Lake View Cemetery, and every year, flags are placed on their graves to say thank you. Each flag placed is a thank you — a simple but touching tribute to the service members buried at Lake View Cemetery. 'It started with President James A. Garfield, and he was the one to first declare a Memorial Day, which was then called Decoration Day,' said Lake View Cemetery President and CEO Kathy Goss. New glass walkway at Nelson Ledges now open Goss said everyone takes great pride in this passion project to honor our heroes for Memorial Day. That includes third-year volunteers like Bernie Wiechowski and Kathy Graven. 'It's meaningful because our dad was a veteran, and our uncles, and so I think it's very important to honor those who have served,' said volunteer Kathy Graven. Each volunteer is given a section, map and list of service members' markers. 'You go searching around the section that you're given to find the names, and you put the flags on the grave,' said volunteer Bernie Wiechowski. Veteran Pete Anderson, a retired Navy captain, is also volunteering at Lake View Cemetery. He said everyone should remember the true meaning of Memorial Day. List: Is it open on Memorial Day? 'Those who have sacrificed and those who have made the ultimate sacrifice,' Anderson said. This effort leads into Memorial Day on Monday, when a program is planned at 10:30 a.m. at the Garfield Memorial. The event will include a formal flag raising, wreath-laying ceremony, musical performances and more. Placing 9,000 American flags on markers is no easy task. Goss said it wouldn't be possible without the help of all the volunteers. 'So the volunteers are awesome,' Goss said. 'They come back every year. We pretty much have a lot of the same people, and they were out here yesterday in the pouring rain and the cold and they were doing it. We got about 150 people a day in different flights, and we could not do it without them, that is for sure.' The Memorial Day program on Monday is free. Guests are encouraged to arrive at 10 a.m. and bring a lawn chair or blanket to watch. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Bedford Moose hosts 8th annual Special Accommodation Prom
BEDFORD, Pa. (WTAJ) — Prom is a special occasion for many teenagers before they graduate or move on to another school. An annual prom in Bedford provides that exact feeling, but it's open to everyone. It's the Special Accommodations Prom. 'When we first started to do this, it was an idea that a lot of these people didn't actually get to go to their real prom. So we made this [for people] 14 to 80. Or if you're older than that, even, come on, have fun. Come out and dance, get to dress up,' Jeffery Goss said. Goss is the Treasurer for the Bedford 480 Moose Riders. He's helped to organize the Special Accommodations Prom since it started. He said there aren't many events like it in the area. When the prom was established years ago, Goss said it was hard to spread the word and inform others who would be interested in attending. However, eight years later, the prom has become so popular that the organizers are always asked about the next year before the current one even ends. 'I like the staff. I like all the clients. I like the way they set up,' Justin Haberstroh, one of the attendees, said. Haberstroh has attended every year. Altoona family shares 9-year-old daughter's heart transplant journey This year's prom started at 2 p.m. It's an event for those verbal and non-verbal, who are free to express themselves however they choose. Teresa Bowser found out about the prom last year and took her son Julian. 'For the most part, he usually just kind of stays to himself. But then once he gets comfortable, he's able to, you know, dance like today. He danced for me and everything,' she said. Just an hour into the prom, there was a proposal, and she said yes. It's the first time anything like that has happened at the event. At the end of the prom, a Prom King and Queen were crowned, as well as a Prom Prince and Princess. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. Rescuers find 'seal in distress' is just a rock
Rescuers called out to help a seal crying in distress off the North East Lincolnshire coast found the struggling animal was actually just a large rock. A member of the public contacted Cleethorpes Wildlife Rescue on Sunday with concerns over the seal's safety. A vet and two volunteers scanned the beach with no joy – and when they asked the caller for an exact location, they realised it was a large seal-shaped rock. Aaron Goss, lead rescuer at the charity, said: "We are frequently telling people not to approach seals and to not disturb them. The rock did look like a seal, so the member of the public [has] done the right thing." He added: "They have stayed back and contacted [us] to give us the heads up, so they have done nothing wrong at all and, of course, it is quite humorous that it was just a rock. "I don't know where she heard the crying from, but that's not a problem – maybe it was a passing gull!" Mr Goss said the call-out came from the Wonderland end of the beach. "She was adamant it was not moving very much but she said it had been moving and she could hear it calling," he said. "A guy had zoomed in on his phone camera and it was definitely a seal. "We were scanning the beach for a really long time, trying to figure out where on earth is this seal. "Eventually, we called her back and asked her for a bit more information, and managed to find – from the description that she had given with the new location –that it was definitely a rock." It was not the first time something had been misidentified as a seal. "A few years ago, we had a log wash up a bit further out on the beach, and people mistook that for a seal," Mr Goss said. "And, again, it did look like a seal from quite a distance. "It's not a problem. We can get the big binoculars out and double-check." The rescue organisation said it was always better to be safe than sorry, and reports of concerns about animals would be followed up. SuperSport United give it away to share points with Polokwane City
THE good old cliché 'games in hand do not equal points in the bag' rang true at the old Peter Mokaba Stadium as SuperSport United's efforts to move off the bottom of the Premiership hit a snag in yesterday's 1-1 draw. Uncharacteristically languishing in the relegation zone, the three-time league champions are thought by many to be in with a chance of avoiding the playoffs, given they have played less matches than their opponents. But that is assuming they would win those. Expectations were they'd bag the maximum three against a City side that have gone off the boil that initially saw them looking like serious top-three contenders early in the season. And when they took the lead early on via a Christian Saile headed goal at the near post from a corner kick, hope sprang eternal for Andre Arendse and his team that they'd bring an end to their long winless run. Prior to this match, SuperSport were without a victory in their last five matches, but the goal – coming as it did shortly after they'd threatened from a similarly in-swinging corner – suggested they had the beating of their hosts. Incredulously though, Bafana Bafana defender Nyiko Mobbie contrived to rob his team of the maximum points just before halftime when he clumsily and needlessly dove into a tackle to hack Bonginkosi Dlamini inside the box. It was a clear penalty which Lebohang Nkaki converted with ease as SuperSport goalkeeper Ricardo Goss moved too early from his line and went the wrong way. Matches between these two teams have historically been closely-contested affairs, and this one was not going to deviate from the script as the match see-sawed from one end to the other without there being further goals. There were attempts either way though as Brian Okoth did well to flail away a sweetly struck Neo Rapoo free kick that looked to be dipping under the crossbar five minutes from halftime. Saile fashioned a brilliant opportunity to complete his brace on 64 minutes, the Congolese striker turning his marker inside out, only to hoof the ball over afterwards as he lost his balance and kicked while falling. The home side responded with a chance of their own five minutes later as Mokibelo Ramabu managed a good turn on the edge of the box, but shot tamely to give Goss easy pickings. Five minutes from the end, Manuel Kambala smashed the ball hard and on target from just outside the box, but Goss was equal to the task and kept the scoreline level. Not the kind of result either team would have been particularly enthused with, SuperSport moreso – Matsatsantsa only moving to 23 points – equal to bottom-placed Cape Town City, who have played two matches more. SuperSport are going to have to make those matches in hand count for three points, or they could find themselves in a spot of bother.

Matt Goss releases charity single commemorating 80th anniversary of VE Day
Singer Matt Goss has released a charity single commemorating the upcoming 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe (VE) Day. The song, Not Forgotten, is a tribute to those who have served the country and the sheet music and lyrics will become available to schools, choirs and churches. Goss, former lead singer of 1980s pop group Bros, is known for songs including Somewhere To Fall and If You Were Here Tonight, and appeared on Strictly Come Dancing in 2022. Proceeds from the song will go to The Not Forgotten, a charity that provides support to veterans and service personnel living with injury, illness or isolation. The video for the single features a collaboration with the Bands of the Household Division, the Countess of Wessex's String Orchestra and an Irish Guards Piper as well as veterans of all three military services who have been supported by The Not Forgotten. Earlier in the year at RAK Studios in London, the first official playback of the single and the showcase of the music video took place, watched by serving military personnel and veterans of the Royal Navy, Army and Royal Air Force. Richard Walker, chief executive of The Not Forgotten, said: 'Today is a momentous day for The Not Forgotten as a charity and as a community. 'We are really excited to have a mainstream commercial song written, performed and dedicated to our work and the 10,000+ veterans and serving personnel we support. 'Matt Goss's deeply moving song will mean our beneficiaries are visible in areas that haven't traditionally celebrated veterans and military service, and this means a lot; particularly in this 80th year of commemorating victory in the Second World War across the country and the Commonwealth. 'To all those involved in the single – thank you. And to all those who will get behind this cause, listen to the song and remember our heroes – we salute you.' The Department for Culture, Media and Sport has outlined a packed schedule for VE Day that includes a Churchill speech performance, a flypast by the Red Arrows and aircraft used to support Ukraine, and a military procession of 1,300 members of the armed forces. The King and Queen will host a tea party for Second World War veterans and street parties, picnics and community celebrations are being encouraged across the country. Not Forgotten is available to stream now on Spotify, Amazon Music and Apple Music.
