Kerala has set a model for the country in Ayurveda treatment, says Health Minister
Kerala's initiatives to ensure quality in Ayurveda have made it a model for the rest of the country, Health Minister Veena George has said. She was inaugurating a newly constructed women's hostel building and open-air stage at Government Ayurveda College, Pariyaram, Kannur on Monday (August 11, 2025). The Minister noted that Kerala was the only State with around 250 NABH-accredited AYUSH institutions. This was achieved by introducing an accreditation system in Ayurveda sector. 'We are moving forward with focussed efforts to ensure quality of Ayurveda medicines and to give special consideration to the growth of this sector,' she said. Research centre Ms. George said that work on an international Ayurveda research centre at Kalayad in Kannur was progressing. The centre was expected to enhance research and innovation in traditional medicine while strengthening the State's position as a global hub for Ayurveda, she said. The new women's hostel building, completed at a cost of ₹4 crore, has 19 rooms each on the first and second floors, with study halls and toilets blocks on both sides. The open-air stage, built at ₹10 lakh, is intended to support cultural and academic activities on the campus. M. VIjin, MLA, presided over the function. 100 years of solace: Tripunithura Govt Ayurveda College sails into centenary year
In abundance of medicinal plants and a long lineage of expert practitioners have made Kerala a sanctum of Ayurveda. And nowhere is this made more profound than at the Government Ayurveda College, a century-old institution in Puthiyakavu near Tripunithura, Kochi. A cluster of Nalpamaram — arayal, pearl, atthi and itthi (resin-bearing ficus trees used in skin treatments) — adorns the college's entranceway. Their presence, and even their fragrance, is symbolic of its rich Ayurvedic heritage. 'While the college is indeed 100 years old, it began very modestly elsewhere — in Tripunithura, the stronghold of the erstwhile Cochin kingdom,' says Dr Jayan Damodaran, an associate professor. 'This new campus was set up only in 1973.'

Ayurvedic formulation promises anti-cancer, anti-HPV potential: Study
Lucknow: Ayurvedic formulation Panchavalkala traditionally used in managing women's health issues has demonstrated potential anti-cancer and anti-HPV (Human Papillomavirus) properties, reveals a new study conducted by Prof JN Mishra, former principal of Government Ayurveda College, Lucknow, and Dr Ruchika Kaol Ghaneker from the RSH Cancer Research Lab in Pune, has been published in the Journal of the details during a press conference on Saturday, Prof Mishra said: "Laboratory experiments showed that an extract of Panchavalkala -- a preparation made from the barks of five trees-- was able to destroy cervical cancer cells in vitro and showed activity against HPV types 16 and 18, which are commonly associated with cervical cancer. The extract also supported the body's natural immune response."The study is among the first to scientifically evaluate the anti-cancer and anti-HPV potential of this Ayurvedic formulation. In tests on mice, it appeared to be safe and did not interfere with a commonly used chemotherapy Mishra advocated an integrative approach, suggesting that combining traditional and modern systems could be beneficial. "Since HPV 16 is also linked to some throat cancers and HPV is associated with skin warts, further research may reveal additional uses," she emphasized that while the laboratory results were encouraging, clinical trials on humans were necessary to evaluate the formulation's effectiveness and safety.
