‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam 2.0': Delhi CM Rekha Gupta launches tree plantation drive to expand city's green cover, aims to plant 70 lakh saplings this year
In a renewed push to green the capital, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Monday launched the 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam 2.0' campaign at the Government Girls Senior Secondary School in Shalimar Bagh in New Delhi. The initiative, an extension of the earlier tree plantation drive, aims to plant over 70 lakh saplings across Delhi this year, according to an official statement. 'This is not just an environmental initiative but an emotional, cultural, and social commitment dedicated to our mothers, motherland, and Mother Nature,' said CM Gupta, after planting a Sindoor (vermilion) tree on the school campus and linked it to a broader cultural sentiment. CM Gupta shared that citizens had gifted her the sapling earlier that day, adding, 'I felt as though God fulfilled my desire.' 'This tree is a symbol of a mother's love and our nation's spirit,' she said, describing the campaign as a historic step for Delhi. The campaign seeks to involve schools, colonies, government offices, social and religious organisations, and corporate groups in a collective effort to increase the city's green cover. Addressing the environmental challenges facing the national capital, the CM highlighted the role of trees in combating pollution and reviving ecological traditions. 'Neem, peepal, and banyan trees were once common in our courtyards, valued both for their religious and scientific significance. It's time to bring back these traditions,' she said. Gupta also appealed to the public to plant trees not just at home, but under flyovers, along roadsides, and on all available vacant lands. She encouraged corporate and civil society bodies to take part in the initiative. 'Every department, school, and institution should participate in this campaign,' she affirmed. The Delhi CM referred to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's inspiration behind the campaign and also criticised the previous Delhi administration for ignoring the Central Government's populist initiatives. 'The previous AAP government had rejected several people-centric initiatives of the Centre for political reasons. Even social and environmental efforts were viewed through a political lens,' she said. Cabinet Minister Ashish Sood, who was present at the launch said, 'Mothers are the givers of life, and trees are protectors of life on Earth. When we dedicate a tree in our mother's name, we take a personal and emotional vow to protect our environment,' he said, adding that the campaign would be expanded citywide in the coming weeks.

Delhi CM launches 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam' campaign, bats for green cover expansion
NEW DELHI: Delhi Chief Minsiter Rekha Gupta on Monday launched the 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam 2.0' campaign from the campus of Government Girls Senior Secondary School (GGSSS) in Shalimar Bagh. Calling it a historic step by the Delhi Government, the chief minister said this is not just an environmental initiative, but also an emotional, cultural, and social commitment dedicated to our mothers, motherland, and Mother Nature. Gupta took a jibe at the previous Delhi government, saying it rejected several people-centric central schemes purely for political reasons. She expressed regret that even social and environmental efforts were viewed through a political lens. The CM stressed on making the campaign a mass movement by involving schools, religious and social organizations, and government institutions. She said the Delhi government has set a target of planting 70 lakh trees this year. Highlighting Delhi's alarming environmental condition, she said tree plantation is one of the most effective ways to fight pollution. Recalling past traditions, she said neem, peepal, and banyan trees were once common in household courtyards, not just for religious reasons but also for their scientific value. She urged people to revive these traditions to restore ecological balance. The CM said that the campaign has now been officially launched and every department, school, and institution will take part. She urged Delhiites to plant a tree in the name of their mother, motherland, or Mother Nature and contribute to a greener Delhi. She appealed to people to plant trees not only at home but also under flyovers, along roadsides, and in all empty spaces. She also invited corporates, civil society, and religious groups to support the cause. Sharing a personal moment, she said, 'When the Prime Minister planted a Sindoor (vermilion) tree at his residence, I too wished for the same. This morning, during a public hearing, a few citizens gifted me a Sindoor sapling. I smiled and thought—had I wished for more, perhaps even that would have come true. It felt as though God fulfilled my desire.' CM planted the Sindoor tree as part of the campaign and called it a symbol of India's cultural spirit. She added, 'I thank PM Modi and our armed forces for ensuring the dignity of our sisters through 'Operation Sindoor.' This is not just a campaign but a reflection of our national spirit.' She concluded by saying, 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam 2.0' is not just a plantation drive—it is a pledge of respect towards mothers and a responsibility towards Earth. The Delhi Government is committed to making this a people's movement.

Delhi CM plants Sindoor tree sapling to kick off phase 2 of plantation drive
Delhi chief minister Rekha Gupta on Monday kicked off the second phase of Delhi's plantation campaign, Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam 2.0 (A tree for your mother), by planting a Sindoor tree (bixa orellana) sapling at the Government Girls Senior Secondary School in Shalimar Bagh, alongside education minister Ashish Sood. 'This is more than an environmental campaign — it's an emotional, cultural and social commitment to our mothers, our motherland, and Mother Nature,' Gupta said. The launch comes days after Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the nationwide Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam initiative on World Environment Day by planting a banyan sapling in Delhi's Mahavir Vanasthali Park. The campaign encourages people to plant trees in honour of their mothers — symbolic of the nurturing power of both motherhood and nature. Taking a dig at her predecessors, Gupta said the previous AAP-led government 'rejected people-centric programmes simply because they were centrally sponsored', even viewing environmental campaigns through a political lens. Gupta announced an ambitious target of planting 70 lakh (seven million) trees this year, calling it the 'most effective and accessible way' to fight pollution. 'This isn't just a plantation drive — it's a pledge of gratitude to our mothers and a shared responsibility to heal the earth. The Delhi government is committed to turning this into a people's movement,' she said. The CM urged Delhi residents to plant trees in every available space — from roadside medians to under flyovers — and called on schools, government departments, religious institutions, civil society groups, and corporates to help turn the campaign into a mass movement. 'The Delhi government has officially rolled out this campaign, with every department, school, and institution set to take part,' CM Gupta said. 'I urge every Delhiite — individuals, organisations, communities — to plant a tree in the name of their mother, motherland, or Mother Nature, and help turn this into a collective green movement.' 'Let's revive the traditions that once placed neem, peepal, and banyan trees in every courtyard — not just for religious reasons, but because they made ecological sense,' she said.

Students made to clean toilets, carry bricks: School official in letter to Haryana CM
Gurgaon: Serious allegations of widespread irregularities have been raised against Government Girls Senior Secondary School (GGSSS), Jhamatpura by the school management committee (SMC). The SMC is a group of community members, primarily parents and local representatives, mandated by the Right to Education (RTE) Act to oversee the functioning and development of govt schools. The allegations range from students being asked to "clean toilets" to admission "fraud". A Class XII student said students have been told to "clean toilets and classrooms besides carrying bricks". "I have done cleaning inside our classroom several times," Class XII student Jyoti Tanwar said. Other allegations include extra amounts — around Rs 400 — being collected from students, but the principal has denied it, saying, "The school administration maintains detailed records of all financial transactions." District education officer (Gurgaon) Indu Deo couldn't be reached for comments. "The midday meal quality has been very poor. It is not served on time," SMC president Sangeeta Nigam has said. Nigam has claimed she has been barred from entering the school and "targeted" by the school principal for raising concerns. However, principal Sushil Kumar Kanwa has said "all the allegations are baseless". by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 2025 Top Trending local enterprise accounting software [Click Here] Esseps Learn More Undo In a formal letter to Haryana chief minister Nayab Singh Saini, Nigam has accused the school administration of financial mismanagement , admission fraud, exam malpractice, mistreatment of students and poor infrastructure. The complaint outlines issues such as illegal fee collection, irregular admissions, falsified attendance records and abuse of students, including being forced to clean toilets. It also alleges the presence of retired staff — at the school in Jhamatpura near Sadar Bazar — still drawing salaries and misuse of funds. Nigam also alleged the children are allegedly forced to take exams under the NIOS system and one of the teachers has also been taking money (Rs 300-400) from students for this "without using it for their benefit". School principal Kanwa said, "This allegation is baseless. A teacher has been implicated in this matter. There are claims about collecting additional fees from students under his direction. However, no student has been charged any extra amount. These accusations are unfounded. We are taking this issue very seriously." Class XII student Jyoti Tanwar appears in videos accessed by TOI, discussing "unauthorised fee collection" by the school. In the footage, she says, "I enrolled in Class IX and while there is no extra amount, the school has collected Rs 430 from me". In another video, Class IX student Diksha claimed that she was charged Rs 400. Class IX student Pushpa claimed she had submitted Rs 430 — all "extra amounts". Tanwar disclosed the disciplinary measures implemented at her school for late arrival. She said students arriving even five minutes late were "required to undertake cleaning duties of toilets and classrooms, alongside carrying bricks". "I have done cleaning inside our classroom several times. In one instance, there was a power failure in our school due to which our smart board was not working, so our class teacher made us clean the dust area inside the classroom," Tanwar said. SMC president Nigam alleged many items have been reported missing from the school, including materials in the National Skills Qualifications Framework room and library books
