Hafizabad gang-rape victim records statement
The complainant in a gang-rape case that took place in Mangat Uncha on April 25 recorded her statement under Section 164 of the Criminal Procedure Code before Civil Judge and Area Magistrate Ali Naqi Tipu, detailing the events involving abduction and assault. Over a month after the incident of gang-rape and forced sexual abuse, police registered a First Information Report (FIR) on June 3. The incident involved three armed men who allegedly gang-raped a woman in front of her husband at gunpoint, while one of the suspects recorded the assault on video. The case gained renewed urgency after the explicit footage surfaced on social media. According to initial reports, the victim were resident of Shahdara Town, Lahore, returning from visiting Nowshehra Virkan when they stopped for a short break. While the victim stepped aside to relieve herself, they were ambushed by seven armed men. The attackers included Ikram, Laeeq and Khawar, residents of Mangat Uncha, along with four unidentified accomplices. The victims were taken at gunpoint to a deserted area behind the Government High School in Mangat Uncha, where the woman was reportedly raped by three men. The perpetrators also stripped both husband and wife, beat them, and forced them to perform explicit acts in front of a camera. A suspect named Chand was reportedly responsible for filming the entire incident. An FIR has now been registered against eight suspects, but no arrests have been made so far. Police have reportedly cordoned off the entire village in a bid to apprehend the culprits.

Ludhiana: Class 10 toppers step into DC's role for 1 day
Three bright minds of Ludhiana stepped into the world of public administration under the 'Ek Din, DC/SSP De Sang' initiative, on Tuesday. Class 10 toppers Mehakpreet Kaur, Sanyam Jindal, and Yusana got the opportunity to spend a day with Ludhiana Deputy Commissioner Himanshu Jain, gaining a first-hand look at the daily workings of the district administration. The trio, Mehakpreet from Government High School, Ghungrali Rajputan, with a score of 97.85%, Sanyam from Government High School, Kakowal, who scored 96.92%, and Yusana from Government Model Senior Secondary School, Cemetery Road, with 96.77%, were welcomed by the DC over breakfast. Sharing his journey from a modest background in Jind, Haryana, to becoming an IAS officer, Himanshu Jain urged the students to dream big, stay focused, and never resort to shortcuts. He emphasised that discipline and consistency are key to turning aspirations into achievements. The students then accompanied DC to his office, where they observed how different departments work in coordination to keep the district running. From handling public grievances to supervising development projects and managing crises, like the recent blackout in Ludhiana, the students were given a complete tour of the DC's responsibilities and decision-making processes. They were also taken through various branches of the district office to understand how government departments function on the ground. Their journey continued with visits to important institutions such as the district bureau of employment & enterprises (DBEE), Bal Bhawan, and the Red Cross Office. At each location, the students interacted with officials and learned how these bodies support employment, child welfare, and social services. A special lunch was also organised, where assistant commissioner Payal Goyal joined in to inspire the young achievers through her own experience in public service. Mehakpreet called the day 'truly exciting' and said it strengthened her desire to give back to society. Sanyam shared that the exposure has encouraged him to consider a future in public service, while Yusana said the visit gave her a deeper understanding of governance and inspired her to aim higher.

Sodomy charges: Education dept suspends Nabha teacher
Punjab education department on Monday suspended the physical education teacher, who has been booked for sodomising a 15-year-old student in Nabha town of Patiala district. The accused is yet to be arrested. As per the suspension orders, a copy of which is with HT, the accused has been directed to report to the district education officer in Sangrur. The suspension comes after the Patiala police booked the accused for sodomising his student. The accused teacher is a physical education teacher at Government High School and was booked under Section 6 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO) Act and 351 (2) of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Education department officials said that an inquiry will be started to find out if there were any other victims during the accused's previous postings. 'The teacher has been suspended with immediate effect. The department will also conduct an inquiry into his alleged misconduct. We will also see if there were more victims,' said a senior official of the education department, pleading anonymity. According to information, the accused was conferred the National Award in 2018 for his efforts to transform the government schools of Punjab without any financial aid or government intervention. He was also felicitated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Despite repeated attempts, the accused teacher couldn't be contacted for comments. Nabha deputy superintendent of police Mandeep Kaur said that raids were underway to nab the accused.

Protests at Idukki school over cancellation of English medium division
The Government High School at Adimaly, Idukki, witnessed a massive protest at the Praveshanolsavam on Monday following the Education department's decision to discontinue the English medium division of Class IX in the school. According to parents, the school authorities announced on May 30 its decision to discontinue the English division of the school this academic year and asked the parents to shift the students to Malayalam medium or to another school. On Monday, the parents, along with activists of political parties, blockaded the headmistress of the school, demanding the withdrawal of the decision. From tribal settlements The parents said the sudden move would seriously affect the students' higher studies. 'Many students are from tribal settlements and have studied till Class VIII in English medium,' a parent said. The protesters alleged that during the protest, a teacher said that the students in the school were not proficient enough in the language to continue their education in English medium. The Deputy Director of Education (DDE), Idukki district, Geetha P.C., said she had directed the teachers in the school to ensure that the nine English medium students continue their studies. 'The teacher-student ratio till Class VIII is 1:36 and we could allot three divisions. However, the student-teacher ratio in Classes IX and X remains fixed at 1:45. The present student strength of the school is 78, and we cannot allot a third division,' said the official.

Children return to schools amid a festive mood in Ernakulam
Hundreds of children were accorded a colourful reception on the occasion of the start of the new academic year across schools in Ernakulam on Monday (June 2). Songs, dance performances, distribution of gifts, sweets, and flowers turned the 'Praveshanolsavam' into a festive mood. Although a few tiny tots broke into tears amid the new surroundings, the teachers and non-teaching staff lost no time in consoling them, as evident from the scenes witnessed in several schools on the first day of the new academic year. At the Government Girls' Lower Primary School, Ernakulam, the children were welcomed with colourful caps made out of chart paper. The senior students were also around to ensure that the younger students remained happy on the inaugural day. The Government High School at West Kadungalloor near Aluva wore a festive look as the district-level 'Praveshanolsavam' was held on the campus. Minister for Industries P. Rajeeve, who inaugurated the programme, said that the new curriculum will equip the children to tackle the challenges in life beyond the knowledge gathered from textbooks. The inclusion of topics such as good habits, the importance of cleanliness, and the ill effects of drugs will enable them to become responsible citizens, he said. Sethu, the author, who spoke on the occasion, said that learning one's mother language will unite humanity. The learning of mother tongue cannot be set aside in our educational system, he said. Name slips with messages related to cleanliness were distributed among the students as part of a campaign by the Suchitwa Mission. Parvathy Gopakumar, Assistant Collector, Ernakulam, who inaugurated the 'Praveshanolsavam' at the St. Joseph U.P. School, urged the children to face the challenges in their lives as part of the journey ahead. 'If you can overcome these challenges, you will be able to move forward with courage,' she said. Anthony Asanparambil, Chairperson of the Maradu Municipality, inaugurated the Thrippunithura sub-district programme held at the Government Lower Primary School in Mangayil. Children were welcomed to the campus with colourful balloons and sweets.
