UP Govt's nod to eye retrieval centre at GIMS, Greater Noida

GREATER NOIDA: Greater Noida, India - December 16, 2019: Government Institute of Medical Sciences (GIMS) , in Greater Noida, India, on Monday, December 16, 2019. (Photo by Sunil Ghosh / Hindustan Times) (HT Archives) The Government Institute of Medical Sciences (GIMS), Greater Noida, has received the Uttar Pradesh government's approval to establish an Eye (Cornea) Retrieval Centre, a facility expected to significantly enhance eye donation and corneal care in Gautam Budh Nagar and neighbouring districts, officials said on Monday. The development will enable local collection of donated corneas and reduce the need for patients from Gautam Budh Nagar, Bulandshahr, and Ghaziabad to travel to far-off centres in Delhi or Meerut. An operational timeline has not yet been announced. Calling the approval a major step towards strengthening specialised healthcare, GIMS director Dr (Brig.) Rakesh Gupta said, 'For too long, patients from Gautam Budh Nagar and neighbouring districts had to travel to Delhi or Meerut for cornea retrieval and related procedures. Now, we will be able to respond swiftly to donations, coordinate with reputed eye banks, and ensure that corneas reach those in need without delay, once the facility becomes operational.' He added that public awareness campaigns to encourage voluntary eye donations are also planned. Located at the junction of the Yamuna Expressway and Eastern Peripheral Expressway, GIMS is a 630-bed tertiary care hospital handling a large volume of road accident victims and critical emergencies. The ophthalmology department receives over 100 outpatients daily, underscoring the need for advanced eye care facilities, officials said. With the upcoming centre, donated corneas will be collected promptly and dispatched to designated Cornea Transplant Centres or Eye Banks under the National Programme for Control of Blindness and Visual Impairment (NPCBVI). GIMS is already linked with reputed eye banks, including AIIMS Eye Bank, New Delhi, and Dr Shroff's Charity Eye Hospital Eye Bank, ensuring efficient allocation of corneas. Professor and head of ophthalmology at GIMS, Dr Krishna Kuldeep, said the centre would allow corneal transplant patients to receive treatment within the district, increasing accessibility and reducing wait times. Associate professor and in charge of the Cornea Retrieval Centre, Dr Shailly Raj, said efforts are also on to initiate corneal transplant surgeries at GIMS in the near future. To be sure, corneas can be donated by individuals aged 5 to 80 years, though viability decreases with age. Corneas from donors with infections such as sepsis, hepatitis, HIV, COVID-19, cancer, or other viral illnesses cannot be used. Retrieval must occur within six hours of death, making timely communication with GIMS critical, Dr Raj added. Officials said the centre will not only bring relief and convenience to patients and families but also promote the spirit of voluntary eye donation. The institute has appealed to families to support the cause, which can restore sight and change lives.

Greater Noida: New OPDs, speciality clinics opened at GIMS

To strengthen and improve public healthcare infrastructure, the Government Institute of Medical Sciences (GIMS), Greater Noida, has come up with new facilities, including a dedicated Wellness Clinic, Super Speciality OPDs, and Private OPDs, officials said on Wednesday. The facilities, including non-invasive cardiac diagnostics such as ECG, Echo, and TMT, have been made operational on hospital's fourth floor. (HT Photo) The facilities, including non-invasive cardiac diagnostics such as ECG, Echo, and TMT, have been made operational on hospital's fourth floor and are expected to benefit a wide cross-section of patients across NCR and western Uttar Pradesh. A health ATM for quick access to basic health data will also be available. The expansion is seen as a significant step in bridging the gap between the public and private healthcare, particularly in terms of affordability and access and will focus on preventive, specialised and patient-friendly care, added officials. 'We are moving closer to our vision of providing holistic, inclusive and high-quality healthcare services. The new units are not just about treating diseases, but promoting early detection, prevention, and long-term wellness without imposing financial strain on the patient,' said GIMS director Dr (Brig.) Rakesh Gupta. The wellness clinic will offer preventive care packages for individuals and corporate clients. The unit is equipped for general health screenings, cardiac and diabetic profiling, X-ray, EEG, spirometry, and other diagnostic services, added officials. Talking about the health check-ups, GIMS director said, 'We have introduced a basic check-up package at ₹330, covering CBC, height, weight and blood pressure, and an advanced package at ₹999 that includes liver, kidney, cardiac and thyroid profiles. In case of abnormal results, specific tests are available at 30-40% lower than the market rates. Consultation is free, with a nominal ₹100 charge for cardiac consultations.' At the Super Speciality OPDs, consultations will be offered by experts in disciplines such as cardiology, neurosurgery, nephrology, oncology, and urology. A cardiologist, nephrologist and neurosurgeon have joined the team to boost the hospital's specialist capacity. In a move to offer specialised care closer to home, the services are intended to reduce patient dependence on private hospitals or distant tertiary care centres. Officials said the newly introduced private OPDs are designed for those seeking personalised, time-efficient consultations with specialist doctors. The exact consultation charges for the Super Speciality and private OPDs are yet to be finalised and had not been confirmed by officials at the time of filing this report. According to the officials, the daily OPD footfall exceeds 1,500, with its 300-bed facility nearing its full capacity, at present. Around 450 patients remain admitted at any given time. As the expansion plans are underway, officials said that once approved, the hospital is expected to get 750 beds.

Youth suffers severe burns after using toilet at his home— could it happen with you too?

A bizarre and terrifying incident unfolded in the National Capital Region when a routine trip to the bathroom turned into a nightmare for a young man, who sustained serious injuries after his home's toilet suddenly exploded. 'The blast left Ashu with severe burn injuries to his face and body. He was rushed to the Government Institute of Medical Sciences (GIMS) in Greater Noida, where doctors confirmed he had suffered 35% burns,' reported TOI quoting Ashu's father, Sunil Pradhan. Importantly, he clarified that Ashu wasn't using any mobile phone or electronic gadget at the time, ruling out some common theories like gadget explosions. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Play War Thunder now for free War Thunder Play Now Undo What happened? Initial assessments ruled out any electrical malfunction as the cause of the explosion, with the home's air conditioning and other appliances working normally at the time. Instead, the blast was traced to an unexpected yet potentially hazardous culprit—methane gas buildup. The family believes that methane may have accumulated in the toilet bowl due to a clogged drain. They suspect a spark—though the exact source remains unknown—ignited the gas, triggering the explosion. Live Events Despite the alarming nature of the incident, AP Verma, a senior manager of the Greater Noida Authority told TOI that the system is clean and functioning normally. It appears that the explosion might have resulted from some internal problem within the house. Why could this happen anywhere? This incident is a wake-up call about how aging plumbing, poor ventilation, and neglected sewage maintenance can create dangerous conditions even in modern homes. While such explosions are rare, it is advised that homeowners regularly inspect and clean their plumbing systems, especially in older buildings, to prevent dangerous gas buildup.
