Visitors' fee at Kozhikode MCH temporarily withdrawn
Authorities at the Government Medical College Hospital (MCH), Kozhikode, have temporarily withdrawn the ₹50 fee imposed on visitors. The fee was enforced in the wake of a direction from the Department of Health and Family Welfare to restrict the number of visitors to the facility in view of a rise in COVID cases. This had led to protests by various organisations. The Democratic Youth Federation of India had warned of an agitation if the fee was not revoked. It is learnt that the hospital development society will meet on June 17 to take a final call on the issue. The department had earlier advised healthcare institutions to restrict the number of caregivers and visitors. Patients and caregivers need to wear face masks.

Doctors from Kozhikode MCH transferred to Wayanad for NMC visit
At least 12 doctors from various departments at the Government Medical College Hospital, Kozhikode, have been transferred to the Government Medical College, Wayanad, on a working arrangement basis. According to sources, the order to transfer the doctors was issued on June 4. They are from departments such as anaesthesia, ophthalmology, gynaecology, paediatrics, pharmacology, microbiology, community medicine, anatomy, and forensic medicine. This is happening at a time when the institution has been facing a rush of patients suffering from seasonal illnesses such as leptospirosis, dengue fever, Hepatitis A, and influenza. It is learnt that the transfer is on account of a scheduled visit by the National Medical Commission (NMC) to the Wayanad medical college. It is to assess issues such as the infrastructure and faculty strength. The sources said that doctors from medical colleges in Thrissur, Kottayam, Alappuzha, and Thiruvananthapuram too have been transferred there. A total of around 20 people have been posted. However, it is not clear if these faculty members will be replaced. This has led to concerns about the reduced staff strength affecting the academic activities and patient care. Already patients are finding it difficult to get beds and many are forced to lay on the floor. After the back-to-back fire outbreaks at the accident and emergency care building, the casualty section was shifted to the old MCH building which is comparatively congested. The patients, doctors and other staff are reportedly struggling to adjust with the facilities there.

In a major step forward for the long-cherished healthcare aspirations of Kasaragod district, the State government has approved the revised estimate of ₹49.75 crore for the construction of the Government Medical College Hospital (MCH) at Badiyadukka Ukinadukka. The official sanction was issued by the Health and Family Welfare department, marking a key milestone in the district's march towards a comprehensive medical infrastructure. The revised estimate, totalling over ₹49 crore, was prepared and submitted by the Kerala Industrial and Technical Consultancy Organisation (KITCO). The approval is expected to fast-track the construction of the hospital complex, a central component of the MCH project that has symbolised the demand of the district for equitable healthcare access. With the new administrative nod, stalled or delayed works can now be resumed unhindered, bringing the project closer to completion. Kasaragod has long faced challenges in the healthcare sector, with people often forced to travel to Mangaluru or districts further south for advanced medical treatment. The COVID-19 pandemic underscored the urgency for a self-sufficient healthcare infrastructure in the district, adding weight to the medical college project. Once operational, the MCH is expected to deliver state-of-the-art medical facilities. The institution will not only serve as a referral hospital but also as a hub for medical education and research. Health experts and public representatives have welcomed the government's decision, terming it a timely intervention that aligns with the district's development goals.
