After summer vacation, schools in Tiruchi welcomed students on Monday. On the first day of the new academic year, textbooks, notebooks, school bags, stationery, shoes, and two sets of uniforms were distributed to children in government and government-aided schools. A total of 7,79,101 textbooks, 8,65,401 notebooks, 1,33,928 sets of school uniforms, and 2,41,282 books were distributed to students of 1,297 government and 363 aided schools in Tiruchi this academic year. Collector M. Pradeep Kumar distributed textbooks, uniforms, and other items to students at Syed Murthuza Government Higher Secondary School here. In Perambalur, about 418 government and aided school students received 31,903 sets of uniforms, 52,071 notebooks and 53,877 books. Children in 11 self-financed Tamil-medium schools also received notebooks. A total of 36,301 students studying in Tamil medium and 5,048 in English medium from Classes 1 to 5 at 751 government and aided schools, and 73,827 Tamil medium students and 14,116 English medium students of Classes 6 to 12 studying at 140 schools in Karur district received textbooks and other school items on Monday. Textbooks, notebooks, school bags, shoes, socks, atlases, crayons, colour pencils, geometry boxes, and uniforms were distributed to the students. Collector P. Rathinasamy distributed textbooks, uniforms and other items to 462 students of Classes 6 to 12 at the Government Model Higher Secondary School in Asithinapuram in Ariyalur. As many as 1,32,155 textbooks, 95,086 notebooks, and 64,610 uniforms have been distributed to students studying in government and aided schools in Ariyalur district. About 34,448 pairs of socks were given to students from classes 6 to 10, 48,168 school bags for classes 6 to 12, 13,966 geometry boxes for classes 6 to 9, and 5,462 drawing books for class 6 students have been distributed to the students, said Mr. Rathinasamy. Earlier, officials conducted a meeting with the school heads and inspected the availability of textbooks and other school items. They ensured that the schools were cleaned and repair works were carried out on the premises to welcome the children after a month-long break.

The district has recorded 95.53% pass in the Plus Two public examination results released on Thursday to bag 16th rank in the overall State pass percentage. The girls, as usual, have outsmarted the boys in the pass percentage. Of the 19,582 students, from 187 higher secondary schools in the district, who appeared for the Plus Two public examination, 18,706 students including 8,313 boys (93.42%) and 10,393 girls (97.29%) have passed. A total of 68 higher secondary schools in the district have recorded cent per cent result. Of the 50 government higher secondary schools in the district with 5,745 students, only four schools – Vellankuli Government Higher Secondary School, Government Model Higher Secondary School, Tirunelveli, Kuttam Government Higher Secondary School and Nallammalpuram Government Adi Dravida Higher Secondary School – have recorded cent per cent pass. Plus Two students may call the Career Counselling Guidance Centre at the Collectorate via 95003 24417 or 95005 24417 for career counselling. Moreover, engineering aspirants may visit the guidance centres at Government College of Engineering, Tirunelveli, Anna University Regional Office, Tirunelveli and Rani Anna Government College for Women, Pettai for engineering admission like filling-up the application forms, choosing the colleges and the courses for various cut-off marks etc, Collector R. Sukumar said. Neighbouring Tenkasi district has recorded a pass percentage of 94.70 to get 22nd rank in the State. Of the 16,468 students who appeared for the public examination from 151 higher secondary schools, 7,029 boys (92.15%) and 8,567 girls (96.91%) have passed. A total of 58 higher secondary schools in the district have recorded cent per cent result. In Tenkasi district of the 54 government higher secondary schools with 7.474 students, only five government higher secondary schools have recorded cent per cent pass percentage.

NEET exam to be held in 12 centres in Erode district

The National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) – UG examination for admission to medical courses will be held at 12 centres across the district on May 4. A total of 4,162 candidates are expected to appear for the exam, which will be conducted at the following centres: Gobi Arts and Science College (two centres), Vellalar College for Women (two centres), Government Model Higher Secondary School, P.S. Park, Government Boys Higher Secondary School, Bhavani Main Road, Perundurai, Kalaimagal Kalvi Nilayam, Sengunthar Higher Secondary School, Government College of Engineering, Chithode, Erode Arts and Science College (two centres), and Chikkaiah Government Arts and Science College, Veerappanchatiram. The examination will be held from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., and candidates are advised to arrive at their respective centres by 1.30 p.m.. The exam is conducted for admission to MBBS, BDS, and BHMS courses. Adequate arrangements will be in place to ensure the smooth conduct of the examination.
