Neithal arts festival to begin in Tuticorin on June 13
1 2 3 Tuticorin: The fourth edition of the Neithal Arts Festival, a celebration of Tamil folk culture and artistic heritage, will be held from June 13 to 15 at VOC College Ground in Tuticorin. The festival is an initiative of MP Kanimozhi. More than 300 folk artists from across Tamil Nadu will participate, presenting over 20 traditional performances including Karagattam, Mayilattam, Oyilattam, Thevarattam, Paraiyattam, Kuchiyattam, Thudumbattam, Jimbala Melam, and Poikkal Kuthirai. Performances will take place each evening from 5 pm to 10 pm. A traditional food exhibition with over 20 stalls will offer indigenous dishes from various regions of Tamil Nadu, promoting local culinary heritage and supporting small-scale food artisans. The festival will open on June 13 with Mangala Isai by the Government Music School, followed by folk performances. Highlights on June 14 include Devarattam, Perunchalangaiyattam, and a Mallar Kambam act by artists with disabilities. Admissions open for district music school
Applications have been invited for admissions to the three-year certificate courses of the Government Music School run by the State Department of Art and Culture here. The school offers courses in vocal music, nagaswaram, thavil, bharathanatyam, mridangam, violin, and Thevaram for the candidates in the age group of 12-25. Candidates should have passed Class VII for admission to vocal, Thevaram, mridangam, violin, and bharathanatyam courses. Basic literacy is enough to join courses in nadaswaram and thavil. The students will be given a scholarship of ₹400 a month for the duration of the 3-year music course. Out-of-station students will be provided free accommodation at government hostels, as well as free travel in government buses, read a press release.
