New plan hopes to turn children in Jersey away from crime
A plan designed to help children who have come into contact with the youth justice system has been made by the Government of Youth Justice Roadmap aims to guide services and professionals who work with children to help them lead safe lives. The government said services and the community across Jersey, including the police, Royal and Youth Courts and Jersey Youth Service will work to ensure children and families receive minister for justice and home affairs, Connétable Richard Vibert said: "A child diverted from crime is not just a reduction in offending, it is a family strengthened, a victim restored, and a safer island." He added: "This is about putting children's rights at the centre of how we build a safer, more supportive Jersey. "It's not just about reducing crime – it's about creating opportunities, restoring trust, and making sure every child has the chance to succeed, no matter what has happened in their past."The roadmap is part of the Building A Safer Community (BASC) Framework, which aims to bring together government departments, the emergency services, courts, community services, charities and families to work in partnership to prevent crime, respond and support young people.

Change to frequency of Jersey lifestyle survey criticised
A Jersey deputy is urging the government to ensure a lifestyle survey is conducted annually, rather than every two years as currently Louise Doublet is asking for £79,000 to keep the Jersey Opinions and Lifestyle Survey (JOLS) going each proposal follows concerns raised after Statistics Jersey announced in 2024 budget cuts would force the survey to alternate years with the Children and Young Persons JOLS has been a key tool in gathering data on islanders' views and living conditions for nearly two decades, with more than 50,000 residents taking part, according to the Government of Jersey. The 2024 JOLS revealed that nearly one-third of surveyed households struggled with housing costs, which campaigners said was essential for shaping responsive and targeted said: "This is valuable statistical data needed to inform policy to target the most vulnerable in the island."If the survey is changed, as planned, to a bi-annual basis vital policy will fall behind the issues currently faced by islanders."

Jersey first-time buyer scheme reopens

Jersey Scottish Football Club upset after new home setback
A Jersey football club has said it is disappointed after missing out on a new Scottish FC, which runs training sessions for boys and girls aged five to 15, had hoped to relocate from Haute Vallee to Les Creux. The club said it submitted a "once-in-a-lifetime" proposal to the Government of Jersey to use the site for community and sporting purposes, but it was not shortlisted, it government has been approached for comment. 'Game changer' The club said it had planned to turn the new facility into a daytime community hub and a football venue in the evenings, open not just to its own teams but to other clubs and casual Vallee and Les Creux were understood to be owned by the government, but lead coach James Scott said the rent on the existing premises was "not sustainable".Les Creux was "such an amazing facility, we could potentially put a full size pitch there, and the clubhouse sort of speaks for itself, really, it's a fantastic facility," he told BBC Radio Jersey."It would be a game changer for us as a club."He said the proposal had support from charities, schools and parents."It's getting to a point now, if we don't find a place that we can call home, we simply will not be able to take any more children on due to the financial costs we currently have to keep keep the club afloat," he the setback, the club remained hopeful that the government might reconsider. "We just want the chance to present our proposal to the panel," Scott added. The BBC has approached the minister for sport for a response.

Freedom of Information delays concern regulator
The office which manages Freedom of Information (FOI) requests to Jersey's public bodies said it had observed "delays, excessive redactions and concerns over misuse of exemptions". Information Commissioner Paul Vane said: "While many public bodies have made significant strides in responding efficiently and proactively publishing information, challenges remain." An FOI is a formal request for information made to a public authority. There were 1,292 received by the Jersey office in 2024, up from1,046 in 2023, said its annual report. There were also 12 appeals, which was described in the report as an "unprecedented" number. It would be reviewing whether this was due to "excessive redactions" and "misuse of exemptions", it added. Mr Vane said: "We have observed instances of delays, excessive redactions, and concerns over misuse of exemptions "We are liaising with the Government of Jersey's Central Information Governance Office to understand more about such delays and how, as the regulator, our office could support."
