Photo: RTHK Cathay Pacific's customer travel director said the airline wants to contribute to the "Air Silk Road" by linking up with the Middle East. Erica Peng said Cathay's flights from Hong Kong to Riyadh in Saudi Arabia – relaunched last October – have been quite popular, with business travellers accounting for 70 percent of the customers. She told RTHK's "Government and You" programme that the airline has other routes to the Middle East too, and it wants to bring people from the region to the mainland, Hong Kong and Southeast Asia. "We see in China's partnership platform, we have more chances to explore different business opportunities," she said. "On the other hand, we can also help promote Hong Kong – that we need to tell friends from Belt and Road countries that the SAR is a tremendous global hub for them."

'Middle East confident in HK's legal sector'
'Middle East confident in HK's legal sector' Horace Cheung says Middle Eastern countries have great trust in Hong Kong's legal system. Photo: RTHK Deputy Secretary for Justice Horace Cheung says Middle Eastern countries have confidence in Hong Kong's professional expertise and hope to utilise the city's legal sector for business and financial services. In an interview with RTHK's "Government and You", Cheung said the Middle East is a relatively new market for Hong Kong's legal sector. He added many Middle Eastern nations are keen to learn more about the Greater Bay Area. Last year, Cheung led a delegation to Saudi Arabia for the inaugural Riyadh International Disputes Week, and signed a memorandum of understanding to strengthen legal cooperation between the two places. Cheung added that many Middle Eastern nations operate under common law, adding that it is a very effective legal system for international trade. "So, they have great trust in Hong Kong's common law system and hope that we can help promote business and financial development between Hong Kong, the mainland, and the Middle East," he said.

'Ties with Gulf countries give HK opportunities'
'Ties with Gulf countries give HK opportunities' The Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development, Algernon Yau, says Middle Eastern countries have a strong demand for innovation and technology. Photo: RTHK The Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development, Algernon Yau, says collaboration with the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries presents significant business opportunities for Hong Kong. In an interview with RTHK's "Government and You", Yau said the GCC countries, namely Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates, are seeking development opportunities in fields such as professional services, finance, and innovation and technology -- where Hong Kong excels. Yau stressed that Middle Eastern countries have a strong demand for innovation and technology, citing Saudi Arabia's plans to build a futuristic megacity. The minister also noted that Hong Kong has assisted in organising roadshows, with two matchmaking sessions connecting 40 companies with various sectors. The Belt and Road Office has also attracted five Middle Eastern companies to establish operations in Hong Kong, demonstrating their confidence in the city. Yau said a key task for the SAR government moving forward is to connect mainland enterprises with the global market, providing them the necessary knowledge about supply chains and information and enabling them to utilise Hong Kong as a regional headquarters or branch office to manage offshore trade and supply chains.
