Woman found dead at Scots flat as police probe 'unexplained' death

Emergency services raced to Dalrymple Street in Stranraer around 6.45am on Sunday after the alarm was raised. Tragically, a 27-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the scene. Police say they are treating the death as "unexplained" as they launch an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the woman's death. A Police Scotland spokesperson said: 'Around 6.45am on Sunday, 11 May, 2025, we were called to an address in Dalrymple Street, Stranraer. 'Officers attended and a 27-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the scene. 'Enquiries are ongoing to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the death, which is currently being treated as unexplained.' Elsewhere, in an unrelated incident, how police are investigating the death of a 71-year-old teaching assistant in the Southside of Glasgow. A first picture of Margaret McGowan was released this morning as cops confirmed they had charged a 78-year-old man in connection with her death. Margaret was found seriously injured at a property in Newfield Square in Nitshill. Police raced to the scene shortly before 9.45pm on Saturday night but sadly the 71-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene. A 78-year-old man has now been charged in connection with her death and a report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal. Tributes poured in for Margaret, who was understood to be a teaching assistant who worked at nearby Gowanbank Primary School. Devastated locals left floral tributes outside the property and children have left drawn pictures. The words"RIP Margaret, we miss you" were also written in chalk on the pavement outside the home. Well-wishers took to social media to pay tribute to Margaret. Sharon Carberry wrote: "So sad, god love her. Thinking of all her family at this very sad time." Elsewhere in the city, a murder investigation was launched after a young boxer was found seriously injured in a property. Josh Taplin, 28, was found at the property on Caldwell Avenue in Knightswood on Monday, May 5. Police raced to the address after officers received a report of concern for a person at 3.35pm. It emerged that the young boxer was fatally slashed. Locals told the Record how one neighbour bravely battled to save Josh before emergency services arrived at the scene. One resident, who wished not to be named, said: "Our neighbour was alerted to Josh being injured and ran into the house to try to save him. He tried his best but by that point, it just wasn't possible. It was a traumatising ordeal for him.

Four Glasgow kids win at International Maths Olympiad
The Glasgow youngsters came out on top in the British Youth International College's (BYITC) seventh International Maths Olympiad. The competition, aimed at students aged four to 14, saw thousands of participants from around the world take part in a week-long challenge. Read more: 'Unforgettable': Adorable baby ducks 'invade' Glasgow school The Glasgow winners were Krishna Nair, nine, from Gowanbank Primary School, Anaisha Saxena, six, from Hillhead Primary School, Isaiah Tahir, 10, from St Bernard's Primary School, and Vivaan Rawat, 10, from Killermont Primary School. Krishna Nair, level 9 winner (Image: Supplied) Krishna, who was the winner of the level 9 category, also set a new record for the college, having now won each of her last five Olympiads. Dr Rashmi Mantri, founder of BYITC, said: "I am delighted for Krishna and believe she has the potential to do great things, as it is truly amazing for someone so young to win at every competition and in higher-level competitions too." Krishna said: "The Olympiad was a big goal for me. "Thanks to the Supermaths app, I was prepared, confident, and ready to give my best and I did." They said: "BYITC's online platform is fun and interactive. "My child looks forward to every session and enjoys learning maths in a structured way." The free-to-enter challenge is based on BYITC's Abacus Maths programme, with 50 questions in total. The results are based on accuracy and timely completion. "Every child who took part deserves enormous credit as we can tell they gave it their best shot and worked very hard. "Young people are naturally competitive and derive lots of fun from playing and experimenting with numbers. "Competitions like this prepare them for higher levels of assessments and exams as they go through their educational journey as they worked on time management and enhance their problem-solving skills. "As we know from research, such high-level game playing significantly boosts logical thinking skills, an excellent preparation for a future which is going to be dominated by AI.
