Parsons Receives 2025 Engineering Excellence Honor Award for Deer Creek Sanitary Tunnel and Pump Station Project

CHANTILLY, Va., June 05, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Parsons Corporation (NYSE: PSN) is proud to announce that the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) at the national Engineering Excellence Awards (EEA) has awarded the Deer Creek Sanitary Tunnel and Pump Station project a 2025 Honor Award in the Water and Wastewater category. This prestigious recognition highlights Parsons' commitment to delivering transformative engineering solutions that address contemporary challenges and promote a sustainable future. Previously, the project received the Grand Award in the Water and Wastewater category from ACEC Missouri, underscoring its exceptional engineering achievements at the state level. As the Deer Creek Watershed Consultant for the Metropolitan St. Louis Sewer District (MSD), Parsons played a pivotal role in this major initiative, one of the first large-scale projects under MSD's Capital Improvement Program. 'The Deer Creek Sanitary Tunnel and Pump Station project exemplifies our dedication to improving vital infrastructure that enhances environmental sustainability and safeguards communities,' said Mark Fialkowski, President, Infrastructure North America for Parsons. 'By leveraging innovative engineering and design, we've helped create a resilient system that will manage stormwater effectively and protect the region's water resources.' The Deer Creek Watershed in St. Louis County encompasses approximately 24,000 acres served by sanitary systems, including over 100 miles of sanitary and combined sewer. The extensive project, which spanned several years, involved preliminary and final design and construction-phase services for a tunnel, pump station, eight shafts, five diversion structures, and five hydraulic drop structures. One of the key components of the project was the design of a wet weather sanitary storage facility aimed at attenuating peak wet weather flows, mitigating overloading of the Deer Creek Trunk sewer, and preventing downstream sewer overloading, including at the Lemay Wastewater Treatment Plant. The tunnel, approximately four miles long and 19 feet in diameter, was constructed 175 feet below the surface in solid rock and can store over 38 million gallons of wastewater during wet-weather events. This innovative solution ensures that the region can effectively manage excess stormwater, reduce environmental impacts, and maintain the integrity of its critical wastewater infrastructure. Parsons has decades of experience designing, delivering, and protecting the infrastructure that connects our communities around the world, including roads and highways; bridges; passenger and freight rail; public transit; airports; and ports and waterways. Our experience includes more than 10,000 miles of roadways, 4,500 bridges, and more than 50 advanced traffic management system deployments that help cities and states improve safety and travel efficiency while also reducing emissions and energy costs to enhance the quality of life in the communities we serve. Teen Innovators Win Top Prize for Plastic Alternative in Hang Seng x HKFYG's Seek Our Ways Social Ideation Programme

HONG KONG SAR - Media OutReach Newswire - 23 May 2025 - A team of four Form Three students from Good Hope School has developed a revolutionary plastic alternative, earning them the Junior Division Grand Award in the inaugural Seek Our Ways Social Ideation Programme. Their invention, the 'Fully Biodegradable Gel', offers an edible, dissolvable and eco-friendly solution to single-use plastic. Supported by Hang Seng Bank and organised by The Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups (HKFYG) Leadership Institute, the Programme themed 'Future Exploration is in the Hands of Youths', focused on three key social areas: 'Environment and Sustainable Development,' 'Promoting Sports for All,' and 'Elderly and Wellness.' It encourages young people to tackle social issues through creative solutions. The debut edition attracted an overwhelming response, receiving nearly 1,000 applications from students. After over 10,000 hours of diverse learning and mentorship over six months, more than 400 participants developed nearly 90 innovative solutions to drive social progress. Following rigorous rounds of competition, nine teams advanced to the finals held recently, where they presented their ideas to a panel of judges. Three winning teams were selected based on their solutions' effectiveness, innovation, scalability and their presentation skills. The Final Pitching Competition and Award Presentation Ceremony took place at Hang Seng Headquarters, with Eric Chan Sui-wai, Commissioner for Youth officiating as the Guest of Honor. He was joined by Diana Cesar, Executive Director and Chief Executive of Hang Seng Bank, Hsu Siu-man, Executive Director of the HKFYG and Grace Chan Man-yee, Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Council of Social Service. The event also brought together school representatives, mentors and over 400 students to witness the emergence of winning teams. Diana Cesar, Executive Director and Chief Executive of Hang Seng Bank, said, 'As Hong Kong's largest local bank, Hang Seng Bank is very pleased to leverage our connections and the expertise of our colleagues to empower youth in driving social innovation through this Programme, alongside our financial support. We hope this Programme encourages young people to engage with societal issues, broaden their horizons and ignite their interests in social innovation.' Hsu Siu-man, Executive Director of the HKFYG, remarked, 'Social innovation requires keen insight and the courage to change; every change begins with attention to issues and imagination for the future. I am delighted to see participants actively engage in the Programme, injecting new hope and possibility into society.' She also expressed her gratitude to Hang Seng Bank and other partnering organisations for their support in nurturing future leaders.' Fifteen-year-old students Ho Lok Ting, Law Hau Wing, Lo Sin Sum and Tsang Lok Yu, the Grand Award winners in the Junior Secondary Division, designed their 'Fully Biodegradable Gel' after learning about sea turtles harmed by plastic waste. The material, made from gelatin and agar, can package dry foods or even serve as shopping bags while decomposing harmlessly.' Law Hau Wing said, 'Traditional plastic linger for centuries as it is non-biodegradable and harmful to the environment. Our 'Fully Biodegradable Gel' disappears without a trace. We hope to collaborate with food manufacturers to bring the product to market.' The Senior Secondary Division Grand Award went to Fanling Kau Yan College, where five Form Four and Form Five students, Chen Tin Oi, Lee Yan Ue, Liang Ka Ki, Ng Ka Yin and Zou Tsz Ham designed a 'One School, One Elderly Centre' proposal to pair schools with elderly centres, fostering mutual learning and companionship. Inspired by an initiative in their sister school in Mainland China, the team developed a sustainable model including curricula, activities, and a B2B framework to scale the project in Hong Kong. A cross-university team from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, the University of Hong Kong, the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and the Hong Kong College of Technology, won the Tertiary Division Grand Award for 'Fruitful', a project repurposing apple pulp into leather-like material. Over the past six months, team members Cheng Hoi Kei, Ho Ka Hei, Lai In Ha, Wong Ngai Fung and Yau Ho Lun conducted in-depth research on this technology and overcame technical challenges. They aim to produce wallets, coasters and other accessories, reducing reliance on synthetic fabrics to promote sustainable development in Hong Kong. Each winning team will receive HK$20,000 and an opportunity for valuable career immersion experience at Hang Seng Bank. Audience-voted 'My Favourite Team' Awards were also presented, with each winning team receiving HK$5,000. For further details about the winning teams, please refer to the appendix. The second edition of the Programme will open for applications by the end of this year, encouraging more youngsters to drive social progress.

Kota Kinabalu: Sabah-based tech development company Einstronic Enterprise Sdn Bhd won the Grand Award at the 2025 International Creativity and Innovation Awards (ICIA) in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. The award-winning product, the SprouT MAKER: BOX Starter Kit, was locally researched and developed by Henry Chau. The company was founded by Law Chau. Advertisement The plug-and-play STEM education kit is designed for student learning, enabling hands-on experimentation with IoT and coding. Featuring modular design and visual programming, the kit offers a fun, interactive and practical approach to tech education, making it suitable for widespread classroom use. 'I never imagined that a simple learning kit we developed in Kota Kinabalu would make it to an international stage,' Chau said. 'This award does not just belong to me, it belongs to the entire team, our supporters and Sabah,' he said. Advertisement The ICIA is a global innovation platform jointly organised by Krya Global (Indonesia), UEH College of Technology and Design (Vietnam) and the National Startup Support Center (NSSC) of Vietnam. It is held in conjunction with the United Nations' World Creativity and Innovation Day, bringing together students, educators and startups from over 20 countries for showcases, innovation challenges and networking events. One of the key highlights is the Startup Exchange, which invited 30 international startups from 20 countries to pitch, exhibit and collaborate. Held from April 25 to 27, the event featured startups from fields such as health tech, sustainability, and education. Einstronic was among the selected teams and the only representative from Sabah. 'The atmosphere was vibrant and full of energy,' Chau recalled. 'Connecting with entrepreneurs, mentors and ecosystem leaders from different countries helped me realise Southeast Asia's potential and Sabah's role in it. "This success would not have been possible without the support of two local organisations: the Sabah Creative Economy and Innovation Centre (Scenic) and the Sabah Techpreneur Association (Sata),' he said. Scenic is a major force in developing Sabah's local startup ecosystem, offering funding access, startup training and international exposure. They helped Chau seize the opportunity and provided full support throughout his international journey. 'Chau's story proves that with the right ecosystem, Sabah entrepreneurs can thrive on the global stage,' said a Scenic representative. Sata, a community-led organisation made up of local tech entrepreneurs, played a vital role in connecting Einstronic with Krya Global and encouraging cross-border collaboration. Einstronic is a local R&D and electronic hardware supplier company headquartered in Kota Kinabalu, focused on innovation in technology and education. Their education initiative, Maker Nation, led by Stephen Chau, delivers programmes in IoT, robotics and 3D printing to schools and communities. With this prestigious award, the Einstronic team is preparing for its next phase of growth. The company has received an exclusive invitation to Techfest Vietnam 2025, one of Southeast Asia's leading innovation festivals. Looking ahead, the team plans to expand its regional partnerships, increase its educational impact and bring 'Made in Sabah' tech to the world. The award has already sparked international interest, with startup teams from Vietnam and Thailand expressing interest in collaborating with Einstronic. These early conversations suggest that the SprouT MAKER:BOX Starter Kit may soon reach a broader Southeast Asian audience and extend its educational impact beyond Malaysia. 'This is just the beginning. We have lit the spark, now it is time to build the fire,' Chau said. * Follow us on Instagram and join our Telegram and/or WhatsApp channel(s) for the latest news you don't want to miss. * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
