15-year-old charged in shooting death of other teen

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — A 15-year-old is being charged in connection to a shooting in Grand Rapids that left another teenager dead in June. The 15-year-old face a charge of reckless discharge causing death, the Grand Rapids Police Department says. News 8 is not using the suspect's name because he is a minor and because of the nature of the charge against him. The shooting happened the night of June 12 on North Avenue near More Street. My'asia Johnson suffered a gunshot wound to the head and died later at the hospital. Police previously said she did not appear to have been targeted and that they were looking into whether the shooting could have been accidentally or recklessly fired. Teenage girl dies after shooting in Grand Rapids Calling the death 'truly senseless,' GRPD Chief Eric Winstrom in a Thursday statement urged parents to talk to their kids about 'The very real and tragic consequences of illegally-possessed guns.' 'One young life was taken, and another young life will be forever impacted,' the statement read in part. 'We, as a community, need to step up and do everything we can to change the culture that puts these guns in the hands of our children. While it won't take away the pain for Myasia's loved ones, we can work together to spare other families from a similar loss.' GRPD said a safe storage violation was not appropriate based on the circumstances of the case, though it did not explain further. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Michigan woman sues Monster Energy after allegedly finding dead mouse in can

FILE - In this photo taken Thursday Oct. 13, 2011, a brown house mouse is shown at the Farallones National Wildlife Refuge, Calif. (AP / Eric Risberg) GRAND RAPIDS, Michigan -- A Grand Rapids, Michigan, woman is suing Monster Beverage Corp., the maker of Monster Energy drinks, after she claims she found a dead mouse in a Monster Energy drink can. Plaintiff McKenzie Cain claims in a lawsuit, which was transferred to the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Michigan on Monday, that she found a dead mouse at the bottom of a Monster Energy drink can after consuming the beverage. Cain initially filed the lawsuit in the 17th Judicial Circuit Court in Kent County in September 2024. Cain bought a can of Monster Energy Drink from a Big Apple Bagels in Grand Rapids in April 2024, according to the lawsuit. After consuming the beverage, Cain claims she picked up the can and felt that it was still 'oddly heavy.' Cain further opened the can and, 'to her horror, found a dead mouse laying in the bottom of the can,' her lawsuit claims. Cain claims that since then she suffered 'severe emotional distress, trauma and physical illness' and that the incident has caused her 'ongoing physical and emotional distress, resulting in medical expenses for counseling and treatment.' Cain is suing Monster Beverage, claiming the company was negligent by failing to ensure that its products 'were safe for consumption and free from harmful contaminants' and that the company is liable for any injuries and damages that she suffered because her beverage 'contained a harmful and dangerous defect — a dead mouse.' The lawsuit also claims that Monster Beverage breached the implied warranty of merchantability. CBS News Detroit has reached out to Monster Beverage for comment. Cain is seeking at least US$25,000, plus interest, costs and attorney fees, as well as any relief that the court deems appropriate, according to her lawsuit.

West Nile virus confirmed among mosquitoes in West Michigan

A second Michigan county has confirmed the presence of West Nile virus among its local mosquito populations this year. The Kent County Health Department in Grand Rapids, has found the West Nile virus in three communities in its jurisdiction – Grand Rapids, Walker and Plainfield Township. The report issued Thursday said this was the first such detections in that West Michigan region. West Nile virus has already been found this year among mosquitoes in Metro Detroit, specifically in Macomb County. Neither county has reported any human cases this year. The mosquito populations were tested through routine surveillance programs. "These detections are a reminder that local mosquitoes are active and capable of spreading illness," said Brendan Earl, Supervising Sanitarian at Kent County Health Department. "By taking simple precautions like applying insect repellent and eliminating standing water around your home, residents can significantly reduce their risk while still enjoying the outdoors." West Nile virus is a leading cause of mosquito-borne disease in the United States, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports. While many people have no symptoms, others can develop a flu-like illness or serious complications. To prevent getting West Nile Virus through a mosquito bite, the health department issues the following recommendations: The above video first aired Sept. 25, 2024.
