Viral Christmas bars Miracle and Sippin' Santa announce their winter 2025 lineup
It may seem early to be thinking about Christmas but on the other hand, when you start looking at these photos of two viral pop-up bars, you will immediately want to be dusting silver glitter onto miniature evergreen trees, hoisting up holly and garlands and easing your body into sleek red velvet tops (or, conversely, ugly Christmas sweaters). Miracle and Sippin' Santa, two incredibly festive pop-up bars, are returning in 2025 with more than 200 locations worldwide. Miracle offers Christmas drinks in a kitschy setting with the kind of décor you are used to seeing at Grandma's (there's also a Hanukkah area, yay!), with cocktails like the Christmapolitan, the Blitzen Barrel and the Run Run Reindeer. If you order the Naughty Shot or the Nice Shot, it comes in a keepsake Miracle glass you can take home. There are also nonalcoholic options including a Snow Day Sipper and a Silent Night. Miracle will open in November at close to 150 locations worldwide. Each location comes with the name of the address tacked on to sound like Miracle on 34th Street, such as Miami's Miracle on 8th Street or Denver's Miracle on Highway 16. Sippin' Santa carries a tropical theme into the holidays: think Santa meets tiki. The beverages trend towards coconut and pineapple, like the Coco Ho Ho Ho served in a porcelain coconut or the Nui Nui New Year, a multi-person drink with Santa and a friend lounging in a porcelain hot tub with a lime and orchid garnish and a surfboard stir stick. It's all playful and geared to get you into the holiday spirit with a loopy grin. Sippin' Santa will open in November 18 in about 45 cities across the globe (Santa can use his sleigh to get between locations quickly, but hopefully you can find good public transportation). Tiki genius Jeff 'Beachbum' Berry collaborates with Sippin' Santa to create the cocktails—he owns Latitude 29 in New Orleans, which is of course one of the locations for the pop-up. Mysteriously, there's a Secret Santa drink on the menu, only offered at some locations (you're told to ask your bartender). One of the nonalcoholic drinks here is adorably called the Designated Sledder. You put the clove in the coconut and drink them both up—merry months-away Christmas! I've found Australia's cutest café – and the food might be better than your grandma's
Everything tastes better when grandma makes it – but I've just discovered a café that gives mine a run for their money. It's cosy, charming and serves homestyle dishes inspired by recipes from real grandmas and grandpas around the world. And the best part? It's tucked away in Northern Queensland, miles from the big-city buzz – so you can turn your visit into a delicious little coastal holiday. Just a block back from the beach in Townsville, Grandma's is a second home for locals and a popular spot for tourists passing by. This was confirmed by the lovely lady seated next to me, who leaned in while I was browsing the menu and admitted, 'I've only been in Townsville for a few days, but this is already my second visit.' With leafy greenery, mismatched potted plants and a couple of quaint sidewalk tables out front, Grandma's has that kind of charm that makes you want to come in. Inside, it felt like I'd walked straight into my own grandparents' home – warm, familiar and full of nostalgia. A comfy leather sofa sat on a patterned rug by the door, and a marble coffee table held a bowl of fresh lemons and a pot of flowers – the kind of homely touch you just don't see in city cafés. I settled into a cosy corner table beside a rustic cabinet filled with a collection of mix-and-match plates and teapots, just like the ones my grandmother passed down to me. While the decor is incredibly charming, it was the stories behind the food that really touched me. Every dish on the menu at Grandma's is a cherished family recipe, passed down from grandparents across the globe – mainly those of the owner and her team of chefs. You could start your morning in the Mediterranean with grandma Haya's signature shakshuka – the café's most popular dish. It features a rich tomato, onion and capsicum sauce, baked in a hot iron pan with two eggs and served with homemade challah or sourdough on the side. I opted for the half-half option: one side featured the classic sauce with the addition of open-fire eggplant and labneh, while the other was layered with spinach and feta. Just like my own grandma's cooking, the portion was incredibly generous, and I used the warm, plaited bread to mop up every last bite. I was tempted to take a detour through Greece with grandma Fedra's veal moussaka, head to Italy for grandpa Vince's homemade beef bolognese or tuck into grandma Mazal's magadra bowl – a comforting mix of rice, lentils and onions, served with tzatziki and fresh salad. Eastern Europe is also represented with traditional blintzes (thin rolled crepes with fillings), while Aussie classics like ricotta pancakes and smashed avo toast also get a run on the menu. If I'd had room for dessert, I would've raided the sweets cabinet, which was packed with homemade cakes and cookies, including a decadent Basque cheesecake. Instead, I rolled out with a very happy belly and a big bag of biscotti for the road.

‘Everyone is on tenterhooks': Santorini streets empty after days of tremors
On the second day of feeling the ground shake under her feet, Veroniki Balabonidi decided it was to time to leave Santorini. At 4.30am on Sunday she and her two young children were on a ferry bound for the port of Piraeus, surrounded by other families fleeing the Aegean isle. 'It was absolutely packed with residents like us who had had enough of the uncertainty,' she said, speaking from the home of her parents-in-law in Athens. 'Feeling the earth shudder so often is very unsettling, but it wasn't that so much. Us locals, we're used to earthquakes. It was the volcano – the fear that it could erupt and start spewing very toxic smoke – that was our real worry.' By Tuesday about 6,000 people – although some estimates put the exodus at nearly twice that – had followed suit, using any means available: planes, boats and even private yachts and pleasure launches. Aegean, the country's national carrier, announced that in the space of 48 hours it had flown 2,700 passengers from Santorini to the Greek capital after doubling flights to the island from Monday. As night fell on a day punctuated by tremors – and at 5.0 magnitude the strongest earthquake yet – the streets and alleys of Fira, the island's spectacular clifftop town, were eerily empty, shops shuttered, tavernas closed. Local people had left and so too had most of the foreign workers and tourists visiting out of season. For the first time that anyone could remember, Santorini was in a quiet zone. 'I've heard of holidaymakers leaving and asking hoteliers for their money back,' said Artemios Drossos, who has run Grandma's, an eatery in Fira, for more than two decades. 'It's easy to understand why. What's happening is very unnatural, one earthquake after the other in such quick succession, but me personally I've got accustomed to them and I'm booked on a flight back there from Athens this weekend. I've got things to do and I'm looking forward to it.' Panagiotis Hatzigeorgiou, a retired police officer and ship worker, echoed that sentiment. 'Now we can listen to music alone and have coffee by ourselves,' he told the Associated Press. A global destination in the chain of Cycladic isles, Santorini is Europe's most popular island, drawing a record 3.5 million tourists last year. Much of its attraction is down to a beauty born of a volcanic eruption – viewed as the greatest in human history – that occurred 3,500 years ago, leaving the island crescent-shaped, ash-covered and with vast cliffs of lava. By any measure, the waters around Santorini have been hit by an unusually intense cluster of earthquakes in the past 72 hours. More than 300 undersea tremors have been recorded, many in excess of 4.5 on the Richter scale. In less than 50 minutes before 8am on Tuesday, when pupils would normally be attending their first class – schools in Santorini and 12 other islands in the Aegean had been shut by the Greek civil protection ministry – seismographs registered six earthquakes, two at magnitudes of 4.8 and 4.9. If seismologists agree on anything it is that the faultline that produced a devastating 7.7-magnitude earthquake and tsunami in 1956, leaving 53 dead and more than 100 injured, has been 'activated' between Santorini and Amorgos, the Cyclades' easternmost isle. 'Everyone I know has been sleeping outside, in their cars, with one member of the family staying awake all night to keep watch,' Balabonidi said. 'I'm 38 and have never experienced anything like it. Everyone is on tenterhooks.' For natural disaster experts, the big question now is whether the seismic activity is a precursor of a much more powerful earthquake – one that could, perhaps, trigger a tsumani – or even of a volcanic eruption. As the tremors have intensified, rockslides have multiplied. Emergency and rescue teams dispatched to the island have described sonic waves that amount to a near constant rumbling. Santorini's volcano last erupted in 1950 and experts say the time is approaching for when it might 'let off steam' again. A second underwater volcano – five miles north-east of Santorini and also active – had caused further alarm because it was closer to the epicentres of the earthquakes. Greece's climate crisis and civil protection ministry said last week that monitoring sensors had picked up 'mild seismic-volcanic activity' inside the island's caldera. 'We believe the volcano has small explosions on average every 50 years … so we are within the timeframe [for it to happen],' said Costas Synolakis, an internationally renowned pioneer in the field of natural disasters, ruling out a bigger explosion on the basis that they happen 'every 17,000 years'. He told Skai TV: 'We have to watch the volcano very closely. We can't rule out any scenario.' Some remained unconcerned. Wataru Saito, 43, an economist who had spent a day on the island, told AFP: 'I'm not so worried about the earthquake or volcano, because I came from Tokyo.'
