Residents help keep Bakersfield beautiful as part of the Great American Cleanup
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — Rain or shine, Bakersfield shows up. About 2,000 volunteers came out on Saturday to help beautify the city for the Great American Cleanup — one of the largest community service events in the nation. Volunteers gathered for lunch after spending two hours at about 50 different locations cleaning up the town. 'It is so wonderful to see so many in our community united to Keep Bakersfield Beautiful,' said Bakersfield Mayor Karen Goh. 'We headed out to Stiern Park; it was definitely a lot of trash,' said volunteer Natalie Tarango. 'This is where I grew up. You want to see the parks clean and see them healthy and have kids be able to play in the park and not have to deal with trash in general.' And it helps those who have trouble doing it themselves. 'Fix the Fish' Block Party in downtown Bakersfield aims to repair Trout's sign 'I went to the community garden, it's a lot of fun,' said volunteer Raquel Robledo. 'A lot of elderly do go to the community garden and it's a lot on their back, so it's kinda nice to give out to them.' It's something we in town have always known, but it can never go understated. 'Coming from all parts of our community, coming from all sectors, high schoolers, adults all joining together to Keep Bakersfield Beautiful,' said Mayor Goh. 'We have a fantastic community.' Mira Monte and Bakersfield Christian High Schools were named co-champions for the Mayor's High School Challenge. As winners of the award, both schools will receive $500.
