'Hang another rug:' CMR honors Rustler boys championship tennis team

At the first C.M. Russell High tennis practice just a few short months ago, head boys' coach Byron Boyd told his players that the goal was to repeat as state champions. 'And they all just stared at me blankly,' Boyd said with a laugh. 'Like I was crazy.' Advertisement More: AA State Track: Great Falls High's Scarlet Harris runner-up in 100 hurdles VOTE: Tennis, track stars up for Prep Athlete of the Week Through a lot of hard work and competition between that moment and last Friday in Bozeman, the Rustlers were able to accomplish just that. CMR honored the boys' tennis squad for its second straight Class AA team championship Tuesday afternoon, unveiling the championship rug in its forever home in the rafters of CMR Fieldhouse. Junior Eli Crist, who finished runner-up at state in Bozeman last Friday with partner Brady Pike in doubles, did the honors of climbing the ladder and unfurling the newest signature CMR rug. C.M. Russell High honored the boys' tennis team on May 27 for its second straight team state championship. Howard Daniel, left, finished third in singles, while Brady Pike, center, and Eli Crist, right, were state finalists in doubles. It was the second straight trip to the AA finals for Crist, who won it all with Josh Stimac on last year's championship team, and the second placing for Pike, who took third with Stimac in 2023. Pike was also a contributor in doubles as a freshman on the 2022 championship team. Advertisement 'It's always a good feeling to hang another rug,' Pike said. 'I mean, me personally, I've gone two for three in my high school tennis career, so it feels really good to just add another one.' Crist and Pike's only losses came against this year's championship duo of Dallin Abrams and Andersen Hurst. Sophomore Howard Daniel rallied to earn third place individually last weekend, while twin brother Fleming Daniel finished sixth to earn All-State as well. Howard's only two losses this season came to Bozeman Gallatin's Mason McCarty, who went on to win his third straight title after defeating Howard in the quarterfinals last Thursday. Howard bounced back to take three matches in straight sets before taking a 6-0, 2-6, 6-4 triumph over Jack Currie-Welch of Missoula Hellgate in the consolation finals. C.M. Russell High honored the boys' tennis team on May 27 for its second straight team state championship. 'Obviously, playing Mason (McCarty) was hard but I was learning,' Howard said. 'I got to learn a lot and to get into my next few matches, it helped me work on finding other players' weaknesses. Mason, he's got no weakness, he's a great player. So, it helped me find where other players' weaknesses were.' Advertisement Fleming Daniel played 'the gutsiest match of the tournament,' Boyd said, going down with an injury leading in the third set of a consolation match on Thursday before retaking the court and closing out a 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 win to advance. 'If we don't have that match, we don't win state,' Boyd said. Connor Sherman and Michael Waldenberg also won a pair of doubles matches as the Rustlers racked up 30 team points, seven ahead of Bozeman High and Billings West, which tied for second. The CMR boys have now won three out of the last four Class AA championships and were second in 2023. The Rustlers, 46-3 over the last four years in duals, were 11-1 in team competition and are the first CMR team in 26 years to repeat as tennis champs. CMR is also the first AA team in eight years to win back-to-back titles, and it was the first time the tennis team has won three out of four. Advertisement 'I couldn't ask for a better group of guys, and support from the parents and support from the girls' team and (head girls' coach) Val (Scheevel)... It was a full team effort, it wasn't a star that did it, it was truly a team title.' Pike said the dynasty the Rustlers have achieved came through hard work and top-notch support from the coaching staff. 'It's a ton of effort from everybody,' Pike said. 'I mean, we've had a really dominant program in the last four, even five years, really. And a lot of that is due to coach Val and coach Byron. I mean, they're awesome coaches and even more amazing people, so it wouldn't be possible without them.' This article originally appeared on Great Falls Tribune: C.M. See a missing police officer post? It's likely part of a nationwide scam, authorities say

HENDERSON, Ky. (WEHT) — Have you seen a post on Facebook recently, asking you to be on the lookout for a missing police officer? Chances are, you're actually seeing a scam post, authorities say. The post includes a photo of a female police officer, apparently named Katie Cunningham, 28, 'who went missing yesterday morning.' It goes on to claim her daughter was found in her car, but the 5'9″, 163-pound officer had not been located. In the midst of her purported disappearance, the post says 'a silver alert has been issued.' Thankfully, none of the information in the post is true — almost. US at risk of losing health designation it's had for 25 years Police in Evansville, Indiana, warned its residents that the post has been shared in multiple cities nationwide, often claiming the officer is from the local community. But as Evansville police and others note, they don't have an officer Katie Cunningham. In Texas, the Chambers County Sheriff's Office said the post is a hoax and it appears to be part of a wider scam 'designed to go viral.' Part of the post is, technically, accurate. Police in Great Falls, Montana, noted that the photo is a real officer: their own Sergeant Katie Cunningham. In a Friday post to Facebook, the department noted that Cunningham is 'alive and well at Great Falls High, working as the SRO supervisor.' 'Love, Alex': Young woman who dies of cancer writes own moving obituary They also noted several other signs the post is fake, including the 10-year-old photo with an incorrect rank and Cunningham being 'very petite' at 5'3.' Plus, a Silver Alert refers to a missing elderly person, which Cunningham is not. 'We're not sure what the scammers hope to gain by making posts like this,' Great Falls police said. Authorities are asking the public not to share the post and to always verify information through official local law enforcement. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Eight Great Falls High football players sign college commitments

The Great Falls High football team had one of its strongest senior contingents in several years this past fall with 28 members. On Tuesday, more than a quarter of those in the class signed commitments to the next level. Eight Bison signed on to play college football in a ceremony at the Old Gym, all with NAIA schools in the Frontier Conference. Committing to Montana Western in Dillon were Mason Kralj and Isaac Tolan, while Braedon Rankin, Dain McMann and Caleb Litzinger signed with MSU-Northern. Schafer Garness and Riley Collette signed on with Montana Tech, and Deegan Duffy inked with Rocky Mountain College. Broden Molen, who is considered to be one of the top long snappers in the country, is still considering his options of where to sign. 'This group has been special since their sophomore year, even going back to their freshman year,' Bison head coach Coda Tchida said. 'We knew they had a really good chance of not only separating Bison football from other schools in the AA but separating Bison football for the future Bison. A lot of kids looked up to them in the stands, on the sidelines this past year. Again, all these guys that have earned a scholarship and the opportunity to play college football worked their tails off. In the weight room, in the meeting room, on the football field, they're all so deserving of an opportunity to go prove that they deserve it.' Collette, also an all-Eastern AA quarterback for Great Falls High, will punt for the Orediggers after leading the state at over 44 yards per kick and earning an All-State nod. Garness was a three-year starter and second-team All-State at center last season as the Bison earned the conference's No. 3 seed and finished 6-4. The future Western Bulldog Tolan was first-team All-State on both the offensive and defensive fronts, leading the state with 22.5 tackles for loss as a noseguard. Kralj was Great Falls High's leading tackler for the third season in a row as a first-team linebacker, while also earning second-team All-State as a running back with over 800 yards and nine touchdowns. Rankin was a starter at tailback and linebacker for Great Falls High, as was McMann at offensive tackle. Another Northern Lights signee Litzinger was second-team All-State as a kicker, hitting 36 of 39 PATs and was 5 for 5 on field goal attempts. Duffy was a starter in the defensive backfield for the Bison. 'It's awesome to see kids move on to the next level, especially nowadays because it's so hard for a freshman to get a scholarship with the transfer portal, NIL, all those options that even the NAIA schools have now,' Tchida said. 'To see eight really good human beings earn opportunities to play college football in the Frontier Conference, which is the best conference in the NAIA, means the world to me. I'm super proud of them and I love all of them to death. I'm excited to see how it goes for them the next four years.'
