GNFL round seven wrap: Hawks swoop on Rams with impressive win in Northampton
There were no close games in sight for round seven of the Great Northern Football League, with Brigades producing an impressive 51-point win over Northampton away from home on Saturday. Eight individual goalkickers got the job done for the Hawks, with Hassan Ahmat-Watkins leading the way with a three-goal bag while Dale Williamson played his part with two goals. Braden Jupp led the scoring duties for Northampton with two goals to his name at Purcher International Oval, with the Rams only managing to kick five majors in the contest at their home ground. Brigades' best on ground was awarded to Jesse Casselton with teammates Dylan Ralph, Mick Quick, Reid Foot and Jed Edwards also impressing as the Hawks swooped for the win. Kingsley Smith was huge for the Rams while Gus Heberle, Peter Hampton, Tyler Caddy and Jupp shone for the home side who fell short. It was a fast start for both sides as the Hawks edged ahead in the first term with two goals to one. It was more of the same in the second quarter as the visitors managed to convert in front of goal adding two majors to their total while Northampton only managed one. Brigades came out firing in the second half as they began to run away with the contest. Northampton were left in the dust as they failed to convert in front of goal only managing one behind. Brigades on the other hand bagged four goals in the term before five-goal final term saw the visiting side secure the win 13.11 (89) to Northampton 5.8 (38). Meanwhile at Greenough Oval, Rovers hosted ladder leaders Railways in what ended up being a tough day for the Demons in an 81-point loss. Clayton Parfitt, Waydn Gentle, Blake Tazewell, Jamie Geier and Kobi Bursill were impressive for the Dees with six individual goal kickers spread out amongst the squad. A gutsy effort in the final term saw their best performance in front of goal kicking 3.1 but it was too little too late for Rovers. The final score was Railways 17.17 to Rovers 6.2 (38). The final game of round seven saw Chapman Valley face off against Mullewa at Mazzuchelli Oval with the Royals flexing their muscles in a huge 169-point win. Tyrone Papertalk Jr was awarded best on ground with a seven-goal performance while brothers Jayden and Kim Schofield kicked five and six goals respectively along with Kobe SImpson who booted five goals and Mitch Thompson three. Callum and Leedham Papertalk kicked the only two goals of the contest for Mullewa with one each, while Kristefer Ryder, Shane Bonney, Calvin Wall and Jayden Wall were judged best on for the visitors. The final score was Chapman Valley 29.17 (191) to Mullewa 2.10 (22). GNFL Round 2 preview: Two heavyweights collide in grand final rematch as Brigades host Chapman Valley
A blockbuster grand final rematch headlines round two of the Great Northern Football League after the last two teams to face-off in 2024 kick off their seasons by going head-to-head. The heavyweight clash will see Brigades host Chapman Valley, with the Brigades looking for grand final revenge against the Royals, who overcame the Hawks to claim their first flag in 32 years. The Hawks return to the GNFL with a new game plan under coach Cory Foot as they put last year's disappointment behind them. It comes at no easy cost for the Hawks with Chapman Valley waiting and ready to fire come Saturday, but with the inclusion of off-season signing Dylan Ralph, from Northampton, the Hawks' midfield unit will be looking to lean on the crafty mid when it needs it most. Nurturing their younger talent, Brigades have an almost perfect mix of youth and experienced heads as they look towards the future of the club. The Valley come into the new season with the same plan as their premiership year in 2024, with an early pre-season ensuring the Royals are ready to fire from the first bounce of the ball on Saturday. If executed, the Royals stand as one of the most feared forward lines in 2025 with last season's leading goal kicker Tyrone Papertalk Jr now potentially facing the prospect of having Borgogno in the forward line. The Royals, however, lost small forward Jay O'Brien in the off-season to Towns, leaving a hole in their forward line but with their depth going into the weekend, Schofield is not starved of options by any means. Fans will be able to see first hand the changes made in the off-season by both coaches as the two giants collide at GBSC on Saturday, with bouncedown at 2.30pm.
