Sunday Boredom Busters: May 25th
SIOUX FALLS, SD (KELO) — Good Earth State Park's Summer Concert Series features the Hegg Brothers. Bring a lawn chair or a blanket and enjoy the music from 4-6 p.m. A park entrance license is required. The Great Plains Zoo in Sioux Falls features a bookworms animal story at 10 a.m., a creature feature at 11:15 a.m. a snow monkey keeper chat at 11:30 a.m., a brown bear keeper chat at 2:30 p.m. and a primate feeding demonstration at 3 p.m. Zoo hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. AMC Collective in Sioux Falls is hosting a Dandelion Painting Make & Take from 1-4 p.m. Use cotton swabs to paint whimsical dandelion flowers on a small canvas, complete with a mini easel for display. The cost is $4. This is the final day the City of Sioux Falls Leaf & Branch Drop-off sites are open. They're located at Lyon Boulevard, south of the W. H. Lyon Fairgrounds and on Chambers Street, near the Household Hazardous Waste Facility. Today's hours are noon to 5 p.m. Movies playing at the historic State Theatre in downtown Sioux Falls include Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey, rated G, plus and The Elephant Man, rated PG and The Shrouds, rated R. The Wells Fargo CineDome & Sweetman Planetarium at the Washington Pavilion features T-Rex, Mars: The Ultimate Voyage and 3-2-1 Liftoff. New movie releases playing at a theater near you include Lilo & Stitch plus The Last Rodeo, both rated PG, and Mission: Impossible, The Final Reckoning, rated PG-13. The Palace Theatre in Luverne, MN features Thunderbolts*, rated PG-13. Show time is 2 p.m. Tickets are $8 for adults, $6 for children. The South Dakota Mud Racers begin their new season of competition. The races start at 1 p.m. at the Mitchell Race Track, located 5 1/2 miles west of town on Highway 16. Enjoy a night of Sprint Car racing in at Huset's Speedway in Brandon. Bat tests positive for rabies at Great Plains Zoo
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) – A bat at the Great Plains Zoo (GPZ) tested positive for rabies. In a press release, GPZ reported that one bat on its campus tested positive for the rabies virus. The bat was found between the pollinator garden and the farm on May 9, between 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., and was removed by animal care staff. The species of the bat infected was not specified in the press release. 'No guests were known to have contact with the bat. Zoo animals, veterinary team members, and designated animal care staff are routinely vaccinated against rabies. There is no concern for the staff members who captured or handled the animals that were infected,' said GPZ veterinarian, Dr. Jenny Clementson. 2 hurt in Sioux Falls house fire Rabies is a fatal viral disease, but it is preventable. It's contracted by exposure to a rabid animal, typically through a bite or scratch. Saliva contact with broken skin or the mouth, nose, or eyes is another possible route of transmission. 'Animal rabies infections occur each year, with bats making up the majority of animals testing positive,' said Josh Clayton, State Epidemiologist. 'If exposed to an animal infected with rabies, prompt follow-up with your medical provider to start the four-dose treatment is critical to prevent human rabies.' SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — Here's a list of local Easter events throughout the state. Sioux Falls Great Plains Zoo is hosting its Egg-stravaganza on Saturday from 10-5. Special event pricing is in effect for general admission. The event is included for people named on Monarch and Gold memberships (plus one free guest). Standard members can purchase $5 tickets online, or $7 walk-up tickets. The event is a zoo-wide egg hunt for kids. The Premiere Playhouse is showing The Passion and the Cross, a play that tells the biblical story of Jesus. The last day to see it is Easter Sunday. Downtown Sioux Falls is hosting an egg hunt that scatters eggs all across downtown businesses. The hunt kicks off at 11:30 a.m. Saturday. The Easter Bunny is appearing at Great Shots along with an egg hunt at the Sanford Diamonds. Brunch and golf starts on Saturday at 9 and the hunt starts at 11 a.m.. Skate City will host its own egg hunt on Saturday. $10 Admission – $4 Rentals. Parents get 1/2 off skate admission with purchase of a child admission. Easter themed games, prizes & more! Lennox Good Earth Farm will host an egg hunt at 11 a.m. on Saturday. Mitchell Coborns will host a free egg hunt for 8 and up on Friday at 10 and another for ages 7 and under at 10 a.m. Saturday. The Easter bunny will be at the store Saturday at 10 a.m. The public library Saturday Storytime at 10:30am for stories, songs & fun. Also, stay for a special Community Creativity event from 11 a.m. -1 p.m. Artists from the Mitchell Area Arts Council and 401 Create will help kids make a watercolor Easter egg drawing and participate in a guided how-to-draw-a-bunny lesson. Bella's annual Easter Egg Hunt at Bella's Butterfly Garden on at 2 p.m. Saturday. The hunt is for children 12 and under please. Come see the Easter bunny and get eggs with candy. M&M Greenhouse will have a special table set up to create your own adult Easter basket – filled with goodies, garden delights, or whatever brings you joy! Bring a friend, get your hands a little dirty, and enjoy a fun afternoon at the greenhouse. A free Community Easter Egg Hunt is at 9:30 a.m. Sunday, April 20, on the DWU Sherman Center Green! Patrons can stay after for refreshments and Easter Service from Fusion Church after the hunt at 10 a.m. inside the DWU Sherman Center. Pierre A first ever for the venue, Fun Time Adventures in Fort Pierre will have an Easter Egg hunt on Saturday. The annual Easter Egg Hunt at the Governor's Mansion is 1 p.m. Sunday.
