For Marshfield softball, it started when Sarah McIntyre tied the game with an RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning, then watched Sofia Blanco drive in the winning run for a 3-2 victory over Duxbury. Burlington baseball's Jack Mercier slapped a two-run single in the bottom of the seventh to beat Wakefield, 2-1, Foxborough's Colin Trimble knocked in one with his RBI single on the ninth inning, sophomore Chloe Seto's sacrifice fly walked it off for Wakefield softball, 4-3, against Burlington. Bedford senior Grady Culhane scored just before overtime expired on an 8-7 win over Cambridge, which came after Jackson Malio scored the equalizer late in regulation. Reading's Ava Kiley and Claire Puglielli claimed to homer in a walk-off 7-5 win over Arlington. 3. Going, going, gone Despite a large slate of baseball and softball games, and warm, summer air invading New England this week, there wasn't a large power display Tuesday, although Kiley and Puglielli both homered for Reading and Hopkinton got blasts from Michael Sullivan and Travis Rych . Lynn Classical turns to alum Lynn Classical brought back a member of its own Hall of Fame to lead the Rams' football program, hiring Brian Smith effective in August. Smith brings 23 years of coaching experience, most recently at Kingstree High in South Carolina, which he led to the second round of the playoffs the last two seasons and was named a 2024 Carolina Shrine Bowl coach. Advertisement 'We are thrilled to welcome coach Smith to the back to the Classical family, although in speaking with coach Smith, you can tell that he never really left,' said Lynn Classical athletic director Josh Mower in a statement. 'His passion for the game, commitment to student-athletes, and vision for our football program make him the ideal leader to bring our team to multiple championships.' Previously, Smith coached CE Murray High in Greeleyville, S.C., where he also served as athletic director and assistant principal. He was named the 2021 4A Region Coach of the Year, and the 5A Region Coach of the Year in 2015, 2016, and 2019. He led Murray to its first state championship in 2015 and also coached three seasons at his alma mater, The Citadel. A community meet-and-greet event will be held later in May. 8. Brayden Mattera , Walpole — The 'quarterback' of Related : Cullen O'Brien , Canton — The junior racked up 17 goals and six assists while lifting the Bulldogs (4-2) to Hockomock wins over Oliver Ames (15-6) and Taunton (16-0), plus a 12-5 nonleague victory at Wayland. Advertisement Nathan Tremlett , Medford — The senior captain led the Mustangs (3-1) to consecutive Greater Boston League wins over Somerville and Revere with four goals and three assists in both contests, and is now up to 17 goals and 14 assists through four games. Eastern Mass. boys' hockey: Globe Players of the Week Jan. 30 to Feb. 5
Chris Cassesso and Matthew DeAngelis , Somerville — The senior linemates each reached 100 career points within a 72-hour span. Cassesso had two goals in a 6-2 Greater Boston League win over Lynn on Mondayand DeAngelis had a goal and four assists. In a 6-5 overtime nonleague victory against Haverhill on Saturday, DeAngelis reached 100 points and capped his hat trick with a shorthanded winner eight seconds into overtime and Cassesso supplied a goal and three assists. Advertisement Jack Doherty , Marshfield — The senior center (9 goals, 18 assists in 18 games) notched a goal and an assist in a 5-1 win over Plymouth South. Doherty lit the lamp in a 5-2 loss in the Ed Burns Coffee Pot Brinn division semifinals before posting two goals and an assist against Plymouth North, a 5-2 win. Related : Adam Gerry , Woburn –– The junior turned in a super effort, stopping all 44 shots as the Tanners downed Middlesex League Liberty foe Reading, 2-0. Camden Shanahan , Burlington –– The senior reached 1,500 career saves, stonewalling Wilmington, 3-0, in a Middlesex League Freedom win.
