Spencerport, Athena win boys bowling sectional titles
GATES, N.Y. (WROC) — Spencerport and Greece Athena both used strong afternoon sessions to earn comeback victories at the boys bowling sectional championships on Wednesday.
Spencerport was in fourth place in Class A after the three-game morning session. However, the Rangers combined for an afternoon total of 3,274 pins to take the sectional title. That was the highest combined series by any team in any session.
The Rangers were led by Jesse Taccone, who had a 697 average in the afternoon session. He finished with 1,359 total pins to earn the Class A individual championship. Taccone had the highest average among Section V bowlers in the regular season.
Nick Green was the second top bowler for Spencerport, finishing in 5th in Class A with 1,252 pins. Evan DiCataldo, Zackary Terran, Kendall Brinson, and Patrick Keady contributed to the Spencerport win.
AJ Ippolito of Churchville-Chili had the top game in Class A, rolling a 276.
Greece Athena was in third place after the morning session but rolled a 3,039 in the afternoon session, highlighted by a 1,100 in the fifth game.
Ben Smeaton led the way for the Trojans. He started things off with a 289 in Game 1, the top individual game of the day. He then had a 708 afternoon series, the top series of the day. He was the Class B and Division I individual champion.
Athena's Liam Schumaker and Myles Honan finished 9th and 12th in Class B, respectively. Nicholas Capizzi Jr, Spencer Wilson, and Charley Doughtery also bowled for Athena to secure the win.
The Class C and D sectional finals were held on Tuesday in Canandaigua.
Waterloo won the Class C team title, led by Alexander Rogers who was the top overall bowler.
Mount Morris/Geneseo won the Class D team title. Five of the top six bowlers in Class D came from Mout Morris/Geneseo. Matthew Neus was the top overall bowler, followed by Daniel Neus, Riley Mantegna, Jason Kingston, and Dominic Lapiani III.
The girls bowling sectional finals will be held on Thursday and Friday.
