Outdoor drinking area approved in downtown Neenah
NEENAH, Wis. (WFRV) – Community members can now enjoy alcohol in outdoor areas in certain parts of downtown Neenah. In a 6-3 vote, Neenah alders created a designated outdoor refreshment area ('DORA') for several parts of the city's downtown. The 'DORA' would be in effect from noon until 10 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday. It will go into effect immediately. 'I think we've got responsible citizens, responsible council members,' said alder Scott Weber. 'Responsible staff in the city and we're going to do the right thing.' The 'DORA' that alders passed is essentially a trial period. It goes through the end of March and then city officials will assess how things went and adjust accordingly if needed. Alders tell Local 5 News they can terminate the 'DORA' at any time. Green Bay-based vaping store seemingly closes abruptly after 10+ years, no reason found Neenah has implemented temporary 'DORA's' in the past for special events and alders said the results have been positive. 'I think we've got a proven track record downtown with positives,' said alder Mark Ellis. 'We've tested this program and had great success with it.' A local business that Local 5 News spoke with said that they see more customers during the temporary 'DORA's.' 'Exponential people coming into the city, enjoying their time in the city and this downtown area is so beautiful,' said Matt Gloede who is the owner of the Santé Wine Bar & Bistro in downtown Neenah. 'I think people being able to enjoy a refreshment on the street is a huge benefit I think.' Not everybody was on board with creating the 'DORA.' In addition to the three alders who voted against it, there were several people who raised concerns during the public comment portion of the meeting. 'The pervasiveness of 'DORA' sounds like we are asking for trouble, kind of what the gentleman spoke about with the effects of alcohol,' said Neenah resident Jennifer McGuire. Residents said they were worried it would lead to more cases of drunk driving, unruly behavior downtown, and that it would turn Neenah into a drinking destination. Neenah resident Michael Sturn told Local 5 News he's been sober for about four years and will avoid downtown now that people can drink alcohol outside. He said he wishes that the city would invest their time and energy into other things. 'We are at crisis level': Wisconsin Humane Society reduces adoption fees as need for dog adoptions skyrockets 'A couple of things that I feel like we should be investing in more is the farmers market and bringing back festivals,' he said. 'Looking into those things instead of encouraging drinking would be more beneficial to the community.' Alder Cari Lendrum made a motion to amend the terms of the 'Dora' to have it start later in the day and only include the summer months. Council voted down her motion. Cellcom outage continues to disrupt services in northeastern Wisconsin
Green Bay-based Cellcom continues to work on restoring services to residents amid an ongoing outage. Cellcom is prioritizing the restoration of "core wireless voice services," followed by others, like "voice over Wi-Fi where possible," it said in a statement on May 17. "We know it's frustrating to still be without full service — especially as we are into the weekend," the company said. The outage began at about 9 p.m. on May 14, according to the Green Bay Press Gazette. The publication reported the disrupted services have affected residents, local government and businesses across northeastern Wisconsin, though emergency 911 services have remained available. Cellcom partially restored voice services on May 16. In its most recent update on May 17, the company said it "still can't promise a timeline" for when customers can expect full service to be restored. "We also want to be clear: this isn't just about fixing what's broken," it said. "We're committed to fully restoring service and earning back your trust." Customers can check Cellcom's website or Facebook page for updates. Jeff Bollier and Ariel Perez contributed to this report. Green Bay-based Associated Bank built out a nearly 6,000-square-foot space at 10044 W. Florissant Ave. in the Delwood Crossing shopping center. The bank chose Dellwood after forming an advisory council that identified the need for a branch and a Community Advocacy Center in the Dellwood-Ferguson area, said Shawn McCutcheon, Associated Bank's St. Louis-Metro East president. The Community Advocacy Center is a space where events can be held to cover issues including financial literacy, hosting seminars for first-time homebuyers, and helping seniors with concerns about elder abuse and fraud, McCutcheon said. McCutcheon declined to say how much the bank spent to convert the vacant space into the branch or details of the long-term lease. The branch has seven employees: a manager, a relationship banker, a universal banker, a teller, two affordable mortgage lenders and a community accountability officer. expand Shawn McCutcheon, Associated Bank's St. Louis-Metro East president Associated Bank The branch gives Associated a presence in four states. ‘At least more than double': Local businesses prepare to multiply inventory for NFL Draft
GREEN BAY, Wis. (WFRV) – Among all the preparation for the NFL draft, many businesses are planning how they will serve more customers than they have likely ever seen before, as estimates project the city's population to nearly triple. 'The sooner you know what you might be looking for, the more options you might have,' said Beth Richgels, owner of Ruby Design and Event Co., which is preparing supplies for dozens of private events the week of the draft. 'More inquiries are coming in, we've been communicating with a lot of our venues in town, they've also been noting a lot of those inquiries coming in, really starting to put that plan in place now.' 'Air conditioning, heating, stereo systems': Luxury port-a-potty interest high for the NFL Draft The Green Bay-based business primarily helps with table sets, especially seemingly every shade of tablecloth, but it is expanding its search for items to rent out the week of the draft. 'Obviously, table linens and things like that will be a big part. We do a lot of those here,' Richgels said. 'We've looked into a lot of other items that are maybe not as common, like portable bars, cocktail tables—things that make an event space an event space that may have otherwise not been that.' Staff are also being added to Ruby Design and Event Co. for that week in late April, with nearly 60 additional members planning to come on board. 'We have upped our inventories, we've upped our staffing, we've got people coming in from nontraditional event organizations to come in and help us that week,' Richgels said. 'We drew some staffing from Door County, which may not be open quite yet, so restaurant staffing and things like that. And also nontraditional people, like event coordinators who work with nonprofits—maybe they're not going to be that busy.' 'This is the biggest event we will probably do, I'll ever do in my career,' she said. Just blocks away at the BP gas station on Oneida Street, staff are working through plans to ensure they have enough concession items and gasoline on hand. 'Packer games get crazy around here. A lot of walk-in traffic, a lot of water is going to be sold,' Oneida BP manager April Maroney said. 'We'll stock up like we do for a game—maybe even twice as much. Beer, water, Gatorades, stuff like that. A lot of snacking items.' The closest gas station, just a few hundred yards from Lambeau Field, has the support of its vendors and employees to have a successful draft week. 'The people that order do a good job stocking for us,' Maroney said. 'We get a lot at Packer games, so I would say three to four times that much. I mean, we really don't know what to expect. We'll probably open both registers and have two people on. I would think that we would have two people running the register and one person keeping stock of the water and beer.' Because Oneida Street will be closed for the draft, the BP will begin filling its fuel reserves early in case any out-of-town travelers make it to the pump before it is closed to traffic. 'Probably a couple weeks ahead,' Maroney said. 'Before they start closing off the roads, definitely. Because people are going to be parking close anyway, and some people are driving here from a distance.' Station owner Tark Ojha explained that suppliers have been flexible, allowing him to stock up as much and as early as he wants. 'We're pretty stocked for all of the beverages and souvenirs that customers need, and the Packers stuff that they're looking for, we have it here,' Ojha said. 'Our gas company is very aware of the Packers draft here, and we can be restocked all the time, 24/7. I think our inventory is going to be at least more than double during this time.' Inside the Packers Pro Shop, the draft collection continues to expand, both in variety and quantity. 'We are looking at it as three straight game days. So Thursday, Friday and Saturday, we are expecting to be extremely busy from open to close,' store manager Derek Dimmer said. 'We've got a large draft selection, it keeps growing, so if you're a local, stop in now to get your draft items.' As the largest pro shop in the NFL, Dimmer said his staff has curated a lineup of Green Bay, draft and combined-themed items ahead of draft season. 'We've also done more of the Green Bay, Lambeau Field-type items for those who are coming here for the first time. Maybe they aren't from Green Bay, but they want something that says they've been to Lambeau Field,' he said. 'Right now we've got the standard draft logo, and eventually we'll switch over to the Green Bay draft logo, so that's more of a green background than a blue background.' Dimmer hopes that shoppers are surprised and impressed by the items they find. 'We've got not just clothing, but a lot of novelty items as well,' he said. 'Pretty much everything right now just has the draft logo on it, but we will get a couple more things with all 32 teams. This jacket here has every team inside the liner. So we will continue to see unique things that you wouldn't normally see in just a draft item.' It will be all hands on deck at the store the week of the draft, but restocking should be considered easy compared to other businesses, as the distribution center is located nearby. 'We have the ability to restock our store from our distribution center pretty quickly since it's not too far from here, so we're feeling pretty good about being able to stay in stock of all our key items,' Dimmer said. 'We will have all of our seasonal employees from the football season—we're hoping to get them all back for the draft.' 'This is going to be the biggest event': Cell service providers adding tech for NFL Draft The items are always changing, and to get what you want, Dimmer said coming in early to shop should be a priority. 'The draft selection does keep growing, and we are getting things in daily,' he said. 'Come in and shop, because if you wait until draft week, it might be harder to get in here than it will right now.' Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
