As per the scheme, each child will have legal ownership of the tree and will be entitled to fell it upon maturity — about 20 years later — to fund key expenses such as higher education, said Divisional forest officer (DFO) Bharat Kumar DK on Monday. "The child will be able to use the timber value to support essential future needs," he said. Terming it the first such initiative in Pilibhit, chief medical officer Dr Alok Kumar said the scheme covered deliveries at govt facilities across the district, including the district women's hospital, 10 community health centres, and most of the 31 primary health centres staffed with nurses. The scheme ran from July 1 to the midnight of July 6. "The Green Gold Certificate scheme is also expected to promote institutional births in government hospitals," Dr Kumar said. "It provides families a certified assurance of future financial support, in addition to the financial aid already given to mothers at the time of delivery." "A fully grown teak tree is currently worth between Rs 75,000 and Rs 1 lakh, and this value is likely to rise significantly over the next two decades," said the DFO. He said that of the state's 37-crore plantation target, Pilibhit has been assigned 39.5 lakh saplings across 50 species — ranging from timber and medicinal plants to ornamental and fruit-bearing trees. The plantation drive, which involves 26 state departments, will continue till July 9.

Govt gives saplings, green gold certs to newborns
Varanasi: The Uttar Pradesh govt has announced a special programme for babies born from July 1 to July 7. Each newborn will receive a "green gold certificate" and a sapling, establishing a lifelong connection with nature. The forest and health departments will jointly implement this scheme. Information about births at district hospitals, CHCs, PHCs and other govt facilities will be conveyed by the health department to forest officials. "The govt plans to present families with a sapling and "Green Gold Certificate" to commemorate their child's birth. The sapling, which will be planted to mark the newborn's arrival, is expected to develop into an asset and companion for the child's future years," said Varanasi's forest conservator Ravi Kumar Singh. Singh emphasised that this initiative would strengthen environmental conservation and social consciousness. He indicated their preference for providing timber-yielding species like teak and rosewood. The department will also guide families about proper planting methods and encourage ongoing tree maintenance. Van Mahotsav: UP kids born in July first week to receive sapling, certificate
Children born in the first week of July will receive a sapling and a Green Gold Certificate as a gift from the Uttar Pradesh government. For representation only (HT File Photo) The initiative, a part of Van Mahotsav, the annual plantation drive, will include all government health facilities – district hospitals, community health centres (CHCs), primary health centres (PHCs), and other government healthcare facilities. Till the child grows up, it will be the responsibility of the parents to plant and protect the sapling, just as they would take care of their child. Under the Van Mahotsav - which runs between July 1 and July 7 - divisional forest officers have been directed to visit hospitals and coordinate with health officials to ensure that every institutional delivery is marked by the gifting of a sapling and a certificate. Priority will be given to tree species such as Teak and Sheesham for gift-giving purposes. Parents will also be encouraged to plant the saplings in vacant spaces and take responsibility for their care. The 'Green Gold Certificate' will serve as a lifelong reminder of the child's bond with nature and the shared responsibility of safeguarding the environment, said the official. Uttar Pradesh principal chief conservator of forests and head of department, Sunil Chaudhary, said, 'Gifting a sapling to a newborn symbolises not just growth and life but also prosperity and environmental responsibility.' The forest department and the health department are working on the modalities of the campaign. The aim is not only to mark the birth of each child with a symbol of prosperity but also to inspire families to plant and nurture trees, contributing to the state's environmental goals. On an average about 15K children are born in the state every day, mostly at government health facilities. The state has planned a plantation of over 35 crore saplings for which the first week of July is crucial with maximum plantation slated to happen.
