Saudi Arabia launches green hydrogen export value chain to Europe
Saudi Gazette report RIYADH — Saudi Arabia has launched a strategic value chain to export green hydrogen and renewable energy to Europe, marking a major step in its efforts to become a global clean energy hub. The move was formalized on Sunday as ACWA Power signed a series of agreements and memoranda of understanding (MoUs) with leading international partners during a high-level workshop in Riyadh. Held under the supervision of the Ministry of Energy and attended by Minister of Energy Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman, the Renewable Energy and Green Hydrogen Export Workshop brought together top officials from Saudi Arabia, Greece, France, and Germany, as well as executives from global energy firms and national institutions. The agreements aim to establish a robust framework for developing large-scale renewable energy projects in the Kingdom dedicated to export, and to create transmission corridors linking Saudi Arabia and Europe. The initiative is also part of the Kingdom's leading role in the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC), reinforcing its strategic position connecting East and West.A multi-party MoU was signed between ACWA Power and major European firms, including Edison S.p.A. (Italy), TotalEnergies Renewables SAS (France), Zhero Europe B.V. (Netherlands), and EnBW (Germany), to assess market demand and technical feasibility for electricity MoUs were signed with HVDC cable and transmission specialists such as CESI, Prysmian, GE Vernova, Siemens Energy, and Hitachi to support infrastructure development across borders.A Joint Development Agreement was also concluded with Germany's EnBW to collaborate on the Yanbu Green Hydrogen Hub, which is set to begin operations in 2030. The project will be a fully integrated complex with renewable energy generation, desalination, electrolysis, ammonia conversion, and a dedicated export terminal.

Malaysia launches green hydrogen hub, hybrid hydro-floating solar project in Terengganu
by SHAUQI WAHAB MALAYSIA has unveiled the Hybrid Hydro Floating Solar (HHFS) project and a Green Hydrogen Hub in Terengganu, marking a significant step towards the country's clean energy ambitions. Jointly spearheaded by Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB), Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas) and Terengganu Inc, these initiatives align with the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR) and the Hydrogen Economy and Technology Roadmap (HETR), reinforcing Malaysia's commitment to renewable energy (RE) and a low-carbon future. The launch ceremony, held on July 12 at the Sultan Mahmud Hydro Electric Power Station in Kenyir, was officiated by Prime Minister (PM) Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. Also present were Terengganu Mentri Besar (MB) Datuk Seri Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar, Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA) Deputy Minister Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir and top executives from TNB, Petronas and Terengganu Inc. The Green Hydrogen Hub is a strategic collaboration between Petronas and TNB. Both entities will work together to develop green hydrogen and its derivatives, while TNB strengthens grid infrastructure to support national and regional clean energy growth. At the same time, the HHFS project is led by TNB's generation arm, TNB Genco, in collaboration with Terengganu Inc, the state's investment body. The project will use Kenyir's hydroelectric reservoir as a platform for floating solar photovoltaic panels—part of TNB's broader 2.5-gigawatt (GW) hybrid solar-hydro initiative. Anwar noted that it is part of ongoing research leading to new, clean, and green alternative energy sources that have been agreed upon at the international level. He also commended the speed and efficiency of the HHFS and green hydrogen projects in Kenyir, which have outpaced other similar initiatives in the region. Anwar also said the project has a 500GWs potential, reaching up to 2,000 or even 2,500GWs, poised for major contribution to the nation and the region. 'It proves Malaysia's capability to lead in green energy — advanced, strong and forward-looking,' he said. Akmal Nasrullah commended Anwar's efforts of highlighting the energy transition agenda at the international stage. 'The PM was also the catalyst for the splendid collaboration between TNB and Petronas, thanks to his recommendation and vision,' he said. Meanwhile, TNB president and CEO Datuk Megat Jalaluddin Megat Hassan shared that the Kenyir HHFS project exemplifies how TNB is leveraging its existing assets to maximise renewable output. The Terengganu green hydrogen hub will be developed within the Kenyir-Kertih corridor, combining TNB's renewable generation assets and Petronas' industrial infrastructure. It will support a 24/7 RE generation from the Kenyir HHFS project while maintaining green hydrogen production, powered by electrolysers. Besides, it will also contribute to downstream products such as green methanol and green ammonia, followed by carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS) infrastructure in Kertih. This integrated end-to-end ecosystem will be the first of its kind and scale in Malaysia and aims to enable cross-sectoral decarbonisation.

He said the new alternative energy initiative – a clean and green collaboration between PETRONAS and Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) – is aligned with both Malaysia's energy policy and international aspirations for green energy. 'Kenyir is now becoming a focal point of interest for international investors. 'This is not just a boost for Terengganu as Kenyir itself will become a major attraction. The project has also been implemented efficiently and swiftly,' he said at the launch of the ventures at the Sultan Mahmud Power Station in Kenyir yesterday. The pilot HHFS project at the Kenyir Dam has a capacity of 100kW and spans 1,085sqm with 220 solar panels. This demonstrates that Tasik Kenyir, which covers an area of 36,900ha, holds vast potential for floating solar development, with up to 10% of the lake's surface suitable for generating an estimated 2,200MW without disrupting the lake's ecology. The Prime Minister also said the project is linked to the Asean Power Grid, a major regional initiative that will begin with an undersea cable project connecting Vietnam to Kota Baru, Kelantan, before extending to Peninsular Malaysia's grid and eventually to Singapore. 'This means that from Vietnam, an undersea cable project will reach Kelantan, necessitating the construction of a new grid. The existing grid is considered insufficient in capacity. 'The new grid will start from Kelantan, then pass through Terengganu and I believe it must be connected to the capabilities and infrastructure here in Kuala Berang and Kenyir, extending through Pahang, parts of Selangor, Johor and into Singapore.' Anwar stressed that the HHFS and Green Hydrogen Hub projects are crucial, and all relevant parties must work together to expedite their implementation. In addition, the Prime Minister called on PETRONAS and TNB to explore ways to provide Technical and Vocational Education and Training, including upskilling programmes, specifically for local youths in Kuala Berang, Hulu Terengganu. He said the relevant ministries, such as the Education Ministry, the Higher Education Ministry and the Human Resources Ministry, along with the Terengganu government, PETRONAS and TNB, should initiate specialised training programmes for local youths. 'I want to ensure youths from Kuala Berang are given training opportunities, so that the people here won't say that while a major project is located here, their children are only able to open small restaurants or work as cleaners. 'It would be better to plan the training properly so there is a dedicated facility for the youths of Kuala Berang and Terengganu to undergo specialised training. I hope this can be expedited,' Anwar said.

Federal govt approves RM200mil for Terengganu coastal erosion mitigation
KUALA BERANG: The gederal government has approved RM200 million to expedite coastal erosion mitigation efforts in Terengganu, says Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. He said the immediate approval was granted after Terengganu Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar raised the matter with him. Anwar also commended the relevant agencies, including the Public Works Department (PWD), for their swift action in implementing the coastal protection project. "I take this opportunity to clarify the situation because sometimes what we do is different from what is alleged by certain quarters. "Differences in opinion are acceptable, but slander and negative assumptions are not, as they contradict the reality on the ground. "Do not be influenced by claims that the federal government is not assisting Terengganu in terms of development," he said during the launch of the Floating Solar Hydro Hybrid and Green Hydrogen Hub development project in Terengganu, held at the Sultan Mahmud Power Station in Kenyir today. Also present were Ahmad Samsuri, Energy Transition and Water Transformation Deputy Minister Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir; TNB chairman Tan SriAbdul Razak Abdul Majid, Petronas chairman Tan Sri Mohd Bakke Salleh, TNB president and chief executive officer Datuk Megat Jalaluddin Megat Hassan; and Petronas group president and chief executive officer Tan Sri Tengku Muhammad Taufik Tengku Aziz.
