BHUBANESWAR: The Odisha government aims to create 10 lakh green livelihoods through community-led forest initiatives and develop the state as a model for eco-tourism destination, said Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Monday. Addressing a state-level function celebrating the 76th Van Mahotsav Week here, Majhi said development of a 'Green Odisha' is a key objective under the Vision Document 2036. 'To achieve this goal, the state aims to create one million green livelihoods through community-led forest initiatives and develop Odisha as a model for eco-tourism. Under the 'Green Odisha' initiative, over 100 processing centres will be established for sal, kendu leaves, bamboo and medicinal plants with a target to generate income worth `5,000 crore for the tribal communities,' he said. The chief minister recalled that the state had last year planted 6.69 crore saplings and secured the fourth position nationwide under the 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam' campaign, inspired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. 'It aims to plant 7.5 crore saplings under the programme this year. In a move to combat lightning strikes, the government had planted around 19 lakh palm trees last year and plans to plant 18 lakh more such trees this year too,' Majhi said.

1 2 Bhubaneswar: Odisha govt aims to create 10 lakh green livelihoods through engagement in eco-tourism activities by establishing 100 facilities to process medicinal plants. The move is an attempt to engage local communities in its mission to establish green Odisha by 2036. On the occasion of the 76th Van Mahotsav, chief minister Mohan Charan Majhi said on Monday. The govt also introduced new awards for environmentalists and conservationists as well as increased the award money. In his speech, the chief minister emphasised the goal of creating a beautiful and green Odisha by 2036 as part of the Vision Odisha programme. To achieve this, 10 lakh green livelihoods will be created through community-led forest initiatives, and Odisha will be developed as a model in the field of eco-tourism. "Over 100 processing centres for sal, tamarind, bamboo and medicinal plants will be established to increase tribal employment under the Green Odisha initiative, aiming for an income of over Rs 5,000 crore," Majhi said in his speech, announcing a target of planting 7.5 crore saplings this year under "Ek Ped Ma Ke Naam 2.0." To protect people and livestock against lightning, the govt planted 19 lakh palm trees last year, and 18 lakh palm trees will be planted this year. Following the recognition of Similipal as a national park, the govt launched a new initiative with a budget of Rs 50 crore for the conservation of wildlife and vegetation. The CM said compensation for human-wildlife conflict has been increased. "In case of death due to wildlife conflict, the compensation has been raised from Rs 6 lakh to Rs 10 lakh," he said. This year, the CM state-level award for forest protection and conservation was jointly awarded to Tulanga Pada Forest Protection Committee from Kalahandi and the Pahadpur Forest Protection Committee from Karanjia Forest Division. Both groups received a combined cash prize of Rs 4 lakh and certificates. "Forests play a vital role in climate regulation, water purification and biodiversity conservation, providing resources like timber and food while supporting livelihoods," forest minister Ganesh Ram Singhkhuntia said on the occasion.
