Cochin Shipyard Advances Maritime Sustainability with Industry 4.0-Ready Plate Cutting Machine
New Delhi: India's maritime sector witnessed a strategic leap forward as Cochin Shipyard Limited commenced operations of its newly inaugurated Industry 4.0-ready plate cutting machine, aligning with the country's broader vision for digital transformation in shipping infrastructure. The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways confirmed in the Rajya Sabha that the cutting-edge machine is now functional, marking a significant step towards automation and precision manufacturing in shipbuilding. This response was provided to a question raised by Dr. K. Laxman, Dr. Kavita Patidar, Narayana Koragappa, and Dr. Medha Vishram Kulkarni in the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday. Additionally, the Ministry has launched the Green Tug Transition Programme (GTTP), a phased initiative aimed at decarbonising tugboat operations at major Indian ports. Under this programme, traditional diesel-fueled harbour tugs will be gradually replaced with hybrid and fully electric tugs to reduce environmental impact and improve fuel efficiency. To support domestic shipbuilding, the government amended the Shipbuilding Financial Assistance Policy in August 2023. The revised policy provides flat financial support of 30% for vessels powered by green fuels such as methanol, ammonia, and hydrogen fuel cells. Vessels with fully electric or hybrid propulsion are eligible for a flat 20% financial assistance. In line with these reforms, the Harit Nauka guidelines were introduced to promote eco-friendly technologies in inland waterway vessels. These measures are part of India's broader maritime decarbonization strategy, which aims to increase the share of green vessels in the national fleet while fostering sustainable innovation in ship construction. The government's comprehensive efforts highlight a transformative shift toward cleaner, smarter, and more resilient maritime operations.

CSL to build two tugs for Polestar Maritime Ltd
KOCHI: The Cochin Shipyard Ltd (CSL) has received an order from Polestar Maritime Ltd to build two 70-tonne bollard pull tugs. This is in addition to the three bollard pull tugs of similar capacity under construction at the Udupi Cochin Shipyard Ltd. Polestar Maritime is a major player in the niche market of harbour tugs, coastal towing and marine services at ports. The tugs will be built in accordance with the designs of Robert Allan Ltd, a leading design house for harbour tugs. CSL and Udupi-CSL have introduced the Robert Allan tugs in India, complying with the Approved Standardised Tug Design and Specifications (ASTDS) of the central government. The vessels will be jointly constructed by CSL and Udupi-CSL under a work-share agreement at the CSL yard in Kochi. The vessels will be propelled by two main engines of 1,838 kW and 2.7m propellers from Niigata IHI Power Systems, Japan. CSL has already delivered four tugs under the 'Made in India' initiative and the present order book includes 18 tugs and two green tugs, which are in various stages of construction. 'We are very happy to receive a repeat order from Polestar Maritime. CSL is committed to transform the industry by introducing the battery electric tugs through the upcoming Green Tug Transition Programme (GTTP) announced by the Union government.' said CSL chairman and managing director Madhu S Nair.

Cochin Shipyard gets orders for two bollard pull tugs
Polestar Maritime Limited has placed an order for two 70-tonne bollard pull tugs with Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL). This is in addition to the three 70-tonne bollard pull tugs contracted earlier with Udupi Cochin Shipyard Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary of CSL, said a release issued here. 'The tugs will be built to the designs of Robert Allan Limited, the world's leading design house for harbour tugs. CSL and Udupi-CSL have introduced the Robert Allan Tugs in India, complying with the Approved Standard Tug Design and Specifications promulgated by the centre for promoting Atma Nirbhar Bharath initiatives,' it said. The vessels will be jointly constructed by CSL and Udupi-CSL under a work-share agreement in CSL's yard here. The vessels will be propelled by 2-Main Engines of 1838 kW and 2.7 m Propellers from Niigata IHI Power Systems Co. Ltd. Japan. CSL Group has already delivered four tugs under the Make in India Initiative. With this contract, the present order book includes 18 tugs and two green tugs, which are in various stages of construction, according to the release. Madhu S.
