1 woman dies, others injured when tornadoes pass through Greene, Monroe, Brown counties

A 33-year-old woman who was driving in her vehicle near Linton died Friday, May 16, when a tree fell on the car during a storm that produced an EF-2 tornado. Allison L. McCammon of Dugger died at the scene of the 7 p.m. incident near County Road 1500 West near Linton. Three children were taken to the hospital, one in critical condition, according to a Greene County Sheriff's Office news release. Dispatchers received a 911 call about a tree on top of a car. Deputies arrived and determined the driver of the 2006 Pontiac had died from injuries from the tree falling on the vehicle. In Monroe County no one died or was seriously hurt during the severe weather that spawned an EF-2 tornado and left swaths of damage in western and southern Monroe County May 16. 'We also are aware of five storm-related non-severe injuries and one 96-year-old male sustained a head injury and was transported to IU Health Bloomington Hospital via ambulance. His injury was reported as non-life threatening,' a news release from the Monroe County Sheriff's Office said. But there was widespread property damage and destruction. NWS confirms Bloomington, Monroe County area hit by EF2 tornado Friday. On Bloomington's south side, the Ranchero Motel at 4805 S. Old Ind. 37 and the Clear Creek Post Office at 4888 S. Rogers St. sustained significant damage. Residents were told mail to Clear Creek postal customers would be taken to the Smithville post office. Customers with postal boxes at Clear Creek can get mail at Smithville in the short term. On the west side of Monroe County, there was significant damage to barns at Bloomington's People & Animal Learning Services (PALS) headquarters on Elwen Road. None of their therapeutic riding horses were reported injured. Nearly 100 homes had tornado damage, many of them on the west side near Ind. 45 and the area around Stanford, Ison, Elwren and Harmony roads. Monroe County Highway Department crews worked throughout Friday night and throughout the weekend responding to assist with roadway hazards. West Ison Road between South Harmony and South Dunlap roads were impassable throughout the weekend. Anyone who needs housing resources or additional support should contact the American Red Cross at 1-800-RED-CROSS. Brown County officials believe a tornado damaged some houses on the south side, likely from a tornado that began in Monroe County. Brown County Emergency Management Director Chad Jenkins said some people in the Horsemen's Campground at Brown County State Park suffered injuries that were not life threatening. Indiana University Health took the injured to the Bloomington hospital. One horse at the campground died and another was injured during the storms.
