Greenfield Police K-9 killed after escaping handler's home, attacking off-duty officer
A police dog was killed after escaping his handler's property and attacking an off-duty officer in New Palestine. Just before 8 p.m. on May 12, Greenfield Police Department K-9 Ace escaped his home while his handler, Officer Caleb Freeman, was away. The dog, a Belgian Malinois, bit a neighbor, causing severe injuries, a news release from the Greenfield Police Department stated. The neighbor, an off-duty officer with the New Palestine Police Department, "is familiar with working dogs and knew how to get Ace to let go," according to Greenfield Police spokesperson Deputy Chief Chuck McMichael. It's unclear how Ace died, but no weapons were used to subdue him, McMichael said The neighbor was taken to an Indianapolis hospital for treatment. The Greenfield Police Department is investigating the circumstances surrounding Ace's death and reviewing internal policies, according to a news release. Ace joined Greenfield police in 2018, according to a department social media post from the time. Greenfield police chief on administrative leave; assistant chief appointed role
The Brief Greenfield Police Chief Jay Johnson was placed on administrative leave on Friday, April 25 over "workplace concerns." The Police and Fire Commission appointed Assistant Chief Eric Lindstrom to fill the role on Wednesday night, April 30. Lindstrom has been with the department since 2003. GREENFIELD, Wis. - The mayor of Greenfield tells FOX6 News that "workplace concerns" are the reasons why that city's police chief is now on leave. What we know Greenfield Mayor Michael Neitzke said Police Chief Jay Johnson was placed on administrative leave on Friday, April 25. Johnson has been the head of the Greenfield Police Department since 2019, when he was appointed chief of police. But Johnson has worked for the department for much longer. He started his time with Greenfield as an officer back in 1992 and has been a captain and lieutenant. What they're saying Mayor Neitzke said the following in a statement: "...Because this is a personnel matter and the review is ongoing, the City will not be providing additional details at this time. Our priority is to ensure a thorough, fair process and to maintain the continued safety and effective service of the Greenfield Police Department for our community." FOX6 News also reached out to Common Council members and they referred back to Neitzke's statement. FOX6 News also reached out to Police and Fire Commission members but have not heard back. What's next On Wednesday evening, April 30, the five-member commission went into closed session during a special meeting to discuss the appointment of an acting police chief. They unanimously voted for Assistant Chief Eric Lindstrom to fill the role. FOX6 News tried to speak with Lindstrom, but was told he was not doing any interviews. He was promoted to patrol sergeant in 2015, detective sergeant in 2017 and captain in 2018. The Greenfield Common Council also had a special meeting and approved hiring a private investigative firm – but it is unclear if that decision is related to Johnson. UPDATE: Fatal stabbing in Greenfield results in murder charge
Apr. 22—GREENFIELD — One dead, one injured and one in custody after a stabbing that took place early Saturday morning in Greenfield. According to a press release from the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, Greenfield police officers received a call at approximately 12:45 a.m. Saturday for a stabbing at 201 NE 4th St. When officers arrived, a Hispanic male, identified as Carlos Garcia-Escalona, 57, of Greenfield, was located in the kitchen of the residence suffering from a stab wound to the chest. Garcia-Escalona was being attended to by Adair County medics. After several minutes of working on Garcia-Escalona, he was declared deceased at the scene. According to a Greenfield Police report, witnesses at the scene said Yudiel Vega-Blanco, 39, of Greenfield, was the person responsible for stabbing two individuals in the residence and directed officers to the location of the knife used. Vega-Blanco was taken into custody on the charges of murder in the first degree and willful injury causing bodily injury, Class A and Class D felonies, respectively. According to witnesses at the residence, prior to the stabbings, Vega-Blanco had become upset, went into the kitchen and retrieved a knife. A second victim in the residence, identified as Jendys Escalona-Mendoza attempted to take the knife from him and was pushed by Vega-Blanco. As Escalona-Mendoza fell backwards, Vega-Blanco swung the knife at him, causing a non-life threatening laceration to his abdomen. Garcia-Escalona then approached Vega-Blanco and stabbed in the chest, which proved to be fatal. Other occupants in the residence tackled Vega-Blanco and were able to take the knife from him and hide it. He was restrained by the occupants until law enforcement arrived. Vega-Blanco was transported to the Adair County Jail and held on $1,000,005 cash-only bond. The Greenfield Police Department is is being assisted by the Adair County Sheriff's Office, the Adair County Attorney's Office and DCI. Law enforcement believes this to be an isolated incident with no active threat to the community. This is an ongoing story.

Court briefs: Gary man charged after found with a gun in stolen car
A Dyer man got three years probation Friday for shooting into a Hammond home in June 2022, court records show. Jordon Novorita, 22, pleaded guilty Feb. 28 to criminal recklessness, a level 5 felony. In exchange, prosecutors agreed to drop all other charges, including attempted murder. Hammond Police responded June 20, 2022 to the 7900 block of Alexander Street. The victim told police a friend had been arguing with his girlfriend before he saw Novorita walk from behind his shed, then heard a 'loud boom,' documents state. A Gary man faces charges after police pulled him over in a stolen car in a school parking lot, then found a gun under his seat. Jadoun Williams, 26, is charged with possession of a firearm on school property, theft and two misdemeanors. His next court date is April 9 before Magistrate Aleksandra Dimitrijevic. Gary Police Ofr. D. Paulson started following Williams in a stolen gray Chevrolet Malibu at 9:48 a.m. on April 2 near 15th Avenue and Burr Street to Thea Bowman Leadership Academy, 3401 W. 5th Avenue. He pulled Williams over in the school's parking lot. The officer drew his gun, ordered Williams out and arrested him. He ordered the woman and child out of the car. Williams said he was taking his daughter something at school. The gun was found under the driver's seat. A Hancock County dispatcher — east of Indianapolis — told Paulson that the vehicle had been stolen with a two-month-old baby inside. Further information on the child was not immediately available from the Greenfield Police Department Friday afternoon.
