Community invited to share positive messages at future CASA office site
The community is invited to take part in a special event this weekend to support CASA for Hunt County, an organization dedicated to advocating for children in foster care. The public is encouraged to visit the future site of the organization's permanent home to write blessings, hopes or kind thoughts on the building's wooden framework before the walls go up. The event will take place on Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon and again on Sunday from noon to 2 p.m. at 2701 Washington St. in Greenville. Attendees can bring a favorite pen or marker to leave a message, though supplies will also be available on site. Messages can include prayers, quotes or any words of encouragement for CASA staff, board members, volunteer advocates and the children they serve. CASA volunteers work to ensure children in foster care find safe, permanent homes. The new office space will help the nonprofit continue and expand its mission in Hunt County. How to reduce the risk of food allergies: Here's what to know
Read part one of our conversation with Cinthia Scott about how and when to start solid foods here. Related: Upstate Parent: Start early, start small – exposing babies to common allergens and a long list of foods in their first year has plenty of benefits, but reducing the risk of food allergies might top them all. Cinthia Scott, a pediatric registered dietitian and lactation consultant, is one of the authors of 'Baby Leads the Way: An Evidence-Based Guide to Introducing Solid Foods' and she is part of the team behind 101 Before One, an evidence-based, baby-led weaning program. One important reason to introduce a wide variety of foods in baby's first year is to expose them to foods that commonly cause food allergy – early exposure, starting between 4-6 months of age lowers their risk of developing food allergy, according to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America and its Kids with Food Allergies program. May is Food Allergy Awareness Month. Here's what to know to help your baby get a good start with allergy-friendly eating. Scott said parents can make it an adventure and possibly even broaden their own range of foods. 'Maybe using peanut butter or tahini or something that we wouldn't necessarily consume on a daily basis, but is a good way of exposing them to top nine allergens – one meal a week, we're going to try a new dish that has a top nine allergen in it, not only for flavor and texture exposure, but also to help prevent food allergies for our kid. That is a really good way of looking at it,' Scott said. If the parent has a serious food allergy, that needs to be factored in as their child is offered new foods, so that exposure can still happen but the parent can stay safe. Scott said the best practice is to have the non-allergic parent or another person feed the allergens in a safe space away from the allergic parent, following guidance from the child's pediatrician. 'We do have adults with pretty severe food allergies, and that might be a case where we do need to talk to the pediatrician and say, 'Hey, I as the parent have a really bad food allergy. What are your recommendations from our specific case?' I know some where the grandparents will take the child to their house and they'll expose them over there,' Scott said. Timing matters: 'We always say is that we want you to introduce it in the morning time, so that if there is a reaction, that we have plenty of time to see it and get them the appropriate care, and that we're not giving a food allergen right before bed or a nap time.' Start small: 'We're just giving them a tiny amount, and then we're building up, as we see they tolerate it.' Talk to your pediatrician: 'If there are a lot of food allergies in the family, talk to your pediatrician about it, because they might even recommend you come in and you can introduce some with their observation. We don't want it to be stressful, and so whatever we can do to make it a less stressful situation, we highly recommend.' Drive pound Jersey Shore
GREENVILLE, S.C. — The one-two punch of Red Sox Top Prospects was dominate, No. 3 prospect Franklin Arias had four hits and No. 21 prospect Nelly Taylor drove in three runs, and the Greenville Drive used a five-run sixth inning to pull away from the Jersey Shore BlueClaws in a 10-4 win Thursday night at Fluor Field. Greenville (22-25) pounded out 14 hits — including home runs from Taylor and Andy Lugo — and capitalized on a pair of Jersey Shore errors to snap a two-game skid. Arias finished 4-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored, while Taylor went 2-for-5 with a double and a solo homer. The Drive jumped ahead early when Taylor launched his fourth home run of the season in the first inning off Blueclaws starter Aaron Combs (0-3), then opened things up in the second. After a Brooks Brannon double and a Justin Riemer single, Lugo delivered the big blow — a three-run homer to left, putting Greenville up 4-0. Jersey Shore (17-29) clawed back with a run in the third on Dylan Campbell's RBI single and got within 5-3 in the sixth when Bryson Ware belted a two-run homer off Darvin Garcia (1-2), who earned the win in relief despite a shaky outing. Greenville responded emphatically in the bottom of the frame. Brannon tripled in Miguel Bleis, then scored on a fielder's choice. Arias added an RBI single before Taylor ripped a two-run double to left-center, extending the lead to 10-3 and effectively sealing the win. Garcia allowed three runs on three hits over 2 2/3 innings in relief of starter Payton Tolle, who scattered five hits and one run over 4 1/3 innings. Matt McShane tossed two scoreless innings to close it out. Ware led the Blueclaws at the plate with a home run and two RBIs. Catcher Kehden Hettiger added three hits, including a double, and scored once. The Drive showed aggression on the bases but were caught stealing twice in the first two innings. Still, their offensive outburst was enough to overcome those missed opportunities and a pair of errors by third baseman Antonio Anderson. Combs was tagged for five runs on eight hits in 4 1/3 innings. Greenville then jumped on reliever Brandon Beckel for five more runs — just one earned — in the sixth. Only six of Greenville's 10 runs were earned as Jersey Shore's defense faltered late. With the win, Greenville improved to 13-11 at home and continued to climb toward .500. The Drive sit 3 1/2 games out of first place in the South Division and look to narrow the gap tomorrow. The two teams continue their six-game series with a Friday doubleheader at Fluor Field with game one scheduled to start at 4:30 p.m. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
