Greenville Recreation and Parks asks for volunteers for this years Special Olympics
GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) — We are just three weeks away from the 2025 Special Olympics Spring Games at J.H. Rose High School. Greenville Recreation and Parks are asking for your help to volunteer and assist these athletes and their staff put the games together on April 3 and April 4. The staff is looking for around 200 volunteers or more to help with staffing this year, with most volunteers taking the role of a 'buddy' for an athlete that day. A 'buddy' will help the athlete get around for their event, cheer them on and even take them to the awards station to be recognized after they compete. Blair Spivey has been working on this event for the last three years. This year she is taking on the role of the local coordinator for Special Olympics Pitt County which she was appointed to in August of 2024. She studied her undergraduate degree at ECU before studying recreational therapy and pursuing an internship at the hospital. 'Really anyone that's interested in being out there, even if you don't have experience, it's a lot of fun just to kind of get out there and see what it's all about. We have plenty of volunteers that come out once and they're like, 'We're hooked, we want to come back'. So it's really awesome. If you have some experience, obviously we welcome you, but even if you don't, don't feel discouraged. It's a learning process and you'll have the best time out there,' said Spivey. The Pitt County Special Olympics put on events year round. In the past year they have also introduced new events and activities including volleyball, bocce ball, pickleball and more.
