White Sox call up Tim Elko from Triple-A, claim Yoendrys Gómez off waivers from Dodgers

CHICAGO (AP) — The Chicago White Sox selected the contract of infielder Tim Elko from Triple-A Charlotte and placed him in the lineup at first base for his major league debut against the Miami Marlins on Saturday night. The 26-year-old Elko was slotted to bat eighth. He hit .348 with 10 homers and 23 RBIs in 31 games with Charlotte. Elko was selected by Chicago in the 10th round of the 2022 amateur draft after he helped lead Ole Miss to the NCAA title. In a corresponding move, the White Sox designated infielder Nick Maton for assignment. Chicago also claimed right-handed pitcher Yoendrys Gómez off waivers from the Los Angeles Dodgers on Saturday and released outfielder Greg Jones. Gómez is a combined 1-1 with a 6.28 ERA with one save and 11 strikeouts over nine relief appearances between the Yankees and Dodgers this season. He was designated for assignment by Los Angeles on May 6 after being claimed off waivers from New York. May 10 - The Chicago White Sox claimed right-hander Yoendrys Gomez off waivers from the Los Angeles Dodgers on Saturday and released outfielder Greg Jones. Gomez, 25, is joining his third organization this season after the Dodgers claimed him off waivers from the New York Yankees last month. He is a combined 1-1 with a 6.28 ERA and a three-out save in nine relief appearances this season. In 15 major league appearances over parts of three seasons, Gomez is 1-1 with a 4.88 ERA. Jones, 27, was 0-for-3 in three games for the White Sox this season. He is 1-for-8 in nine career games after a short stint with the Colorado Rockies last season. In another move, the White Sox selected the contract of first baseman Tim Elko from Triple-A Charlotte, while infielder Nick Maton was designated for assignment. Elko, 26, is poised to make his major league debut after batting .348 with 10 home runs and 23 RBIs in 31 games at Charlotte. He was in the starting lineup and batting eighth for Saturday's home game against the Miami Marlins. Maton, 28, was batting .167 with two home runs and four RBIs in 25 games with the White Sox. Colin Smalls gave American a 71-67 lead at the free-throw line with 10 seconds left. Jones added five rebounds for the Eagles (20-12). Lincoln Ball added 13 points while shooting 5 of 8 from the field and 2 for 4 from the line while he also had six rebounds. Matt Mayock went 4 of 5 from the field to finish with 10 points. Alex Chaikin led the way for the Leopards (13-20) with 29 points and six rebounds. Justin Vander Baan added 14 points, six rebounds, five assists and five blocks for Lafayette. Andrew Phillips finished with 12 points and six rebounds. Jones scored seven points in the first half and American went into the break trailing 34-23. American went on a 14-0 second-half run to give them the lead at 56-51 with 9:11 remaining in the half.
